An invitation to become an editorial board member (EBM) of an academic journal should be regarded as evidence of recognition of a scholar’s research achievement and impact on his discipline. This is a requirement of Merton’s norm of universalism in science, which proposes that awards and prestige ought to be held to objective and pre-established impersonal criteria that depend exclusively on the quality of scholarly output. This principle is particularly important in the context of editorial teams of academic journals. The aim of this paper is to present an empirical case study of the academic achievements of the EBMs of the top ten Polish pedagogical journals, in 2020. For research purposes, the author assumed that the criterion for nomination to the editorial board was the scholars’ output, as evidenced by their publications indexed in the WoS and Scopus databases and also the number of corresponding citations. The results put into question the idea that the editorial nominations examined were indeed grounded in the publications indexed in the WoS and Scopus databases. Based on the record of EBMs output indexed in these databases, most EBMs analysed were not proven to be the most productive or cited scholars.

The background of the research is the fact that learning outcomes are still below the KKM on social studies content, namely 80%. Researchers used Predict, Observe and Explain models in improving SD social studies learning outcomes. The research model design was classroom action research which was adapted from the model of Kemmis and Mc.Taggart. The tools used to collect data in this study were student and teacher observation data to see the application of the Predict, Observe and Explain models and evaluation sheets in measuring the improvement of learning outcomes. The research achievement can be seen from the application of the Predict, Observe and Explain model stages to students and teachers which exceed 90% and the percentage of learning outcomes exceeds 80%. Discussion, learning outcomes in cycle I is 52%, cycle II is 65% and cycle III is 100%. Student observations in the first cycle were 60%, the second cycle was 74, the third cycle was 92. Meanwhile, the teacher's observation in cycle I is 70, cycle II is 78, and cycle III is 96. It is concluded that the Predict, Observe and Explain model is very effective for teachers to increase their creative innovation abilities and can improve learning outcomes, especially in grade IV SD social studies content. In cycle I there are still weaknesses of students who have not adapted to the learning carried out by the teacher. The teacher still hasn't done all the steps from the Predict, Observe and Explain model so that it needs to be corrected in the second cycle. In the second cycle students were able to adapt to the learning model carried out by the teacher. The teacher has started to master the Predict, Observe and Explain model but has not reached the target so it needs improvement for the third cycle. from the third cycle student learning outcomes as well as student monitoring actions and teacher monitoring actions using the Predict, Observe, and Explain models are as expected. It can be said that the Predict, Observe, and Explain models are alternative models used in elementary schools.

Objective The proportion of women in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery (OHNS) has steadily increased in recent years. This study examines gender representation in recognition awards given by OHNS societies between 2009 and 2019. Study Design Retrospective analysis of recognition awards given by 10 OHNS societies between 2009 and 2019. Setting Retrospective review of web-based, public records. Methods Data from 19 awards were analyzed for recipient gender ratio, society, subspecialty, award type (research, achievement, or humanitarian), and change over time. Results Of 184 awards given by societies in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery, 59 (28%) were given to women. Women received 49 (28%) research awards, 9 (31%) humanitarian awards, and 1 (2.8%) achievement award. Women represented 31% of award winners in rhinology/skull base, 30% of award winners in head and neck surgery, 8% in neurotology, and 6% in facial plastic surgery. The American Head and Neck Society Prevention and Early Detection award had the highest representation of women at 43%. Some awards had no female awardees over the past decade. No temporal trends were observed. Conclusion From 2009 to 2019, women received recognition awards at a higher percentage than overall gender representation in OHNS. Comparison of research, humanitarian, and achievement awards revealed the disparity of women receiving fewer achievement awards relative to men. Gender representation of award recipients varied by subspecialty, which may be partially determined by gender distribution within the fields.
