Massive Online Open Courses Platforms

This article presents a comparative and analytical study that was carried out for six massive online open course (MOOC) platforms: Coursera, edX, Udacity, Canvas, FutureLearn and Riwaq. The main objective of this article was to analyze the attitudes, perspectives, and different technical and pedagogical characteristics of these platforms. This analysis was achieved by examining a sample of 16 courses from these platforms in the fields of: computing sciences, business, art and humanities. The results show the differences and similarities among these platforms in terms of interface ergonomics and interface reliability, computing tools, information systems, costs, course duration, variety of learning activities and pedagogical components, evaluation types, social interaction, and the degree of instructors' participation. This has helped us to finally choose the platform on which our Adaptive Connectivist MOOC (ACM) approach can be applied.

To date, little guidance exists on how to design safe and effective online programming on sensitive and/or controversial topics. Massive online open courses (MOOCs) represent a unique opportunity for delivering inclusive and accessible teaching to international learner audiences. This paper provides an insight into designing and delivering the first internationally accessible MOOC on suicide prevention in the global context in 2019-highlighting insights into best practice as well as pertinent challenges. The results from two runs of this MOOC indicate that there appears to be a global demand for education on suicide prevention. Our practice suggests that new knowledge on extremely sensitive topics such as suicide can be safely and effectively delivered through a MOOC to an international community of learners. Learner safety needs to be carefully considered when developing and delivering online learning. Thorough and careful moderation is essential to ensure that learners engage safely and sensitively with the content and with one another. The involvement of diverse stakeholders, including people with lived experience, in the MOOC design is recommended to enhance the authenticity, inclusiveness and rigour of the curriculum.

Climate Change is the most important threat to our society and all species on Earth. Large alterations in the climate are affecting every aspect of our society and in order to limit this impact we must decarbonize the economy before 2050. Although science presents solid evidence on the magnitude of the problem and outlines precisely the consequences, people do not act accordingly and do not consider this issue a priority for their survival. The reason behind this paradox might be a non-appropriate Social Representation of Climate Change in society as the Social Representation conditions and forms the response of the society. In this paper, we extend previous investigations of how this Social Representation is formed in order to find ways to improve it through a Massive Online Open Course on the Science of Climate Change. Using a validated questionnaire, we investigated the knowledge dimension of the Social Representation of Climate Change in a group of students of a MOOC on Climate Change. A pre- and posttest revealed general improvements in all the categories that were considered in this study. A detailed analysis showed different degrees of improvement for different groups, providing new insights in the efficiency of knowledge-based online courses. Well designed Massive Online Open Courses, based on scientific evidence, targeted to the general public might improve the Social Representation of Climate Change, which may in turn trigger awareness and an effective mobilization to address this important and urgent topic.

This study explored youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) learning social competence in the context of innovative 3D virtual learning environment and the effects of gaming as a central element of the learning experience. The empirical study retrospectively compared the social interactions of 11 adolescents with ASD in game-and nongame-based 3D collaborative learning activities in the same social competence training curriculum. We employed a learning analytics approach - association rule mining to uncover the associative rules of verbal social interaction and nonverbal social interaction contributors from the large dataset of the coded social behaviors. By comparing the rules across the game and nongame activities, we found a significant difference in youth with ASD’s social performance. The results of the group comparison study indicated that the co-occurrence of verbal and nonverbal behaviors is much stronger in the game-based learning activities. The game activities also yielded more diverse social interaction behavior patterns. On the other hand, in the nongame activities, students’ social interaction behavior patterns are much more limited. Furthermore, the impact of game design principles on learning is then discussed in this paper.

Abstract Background Public Health Ethics (PHE) has been taught first as optional and later as a mandatory subject in the Master of Public Health in Barcelona for about 6 years. During these years, professors have adapted the methodology to make it more attractive and to maximize students' participation and time spent debating and practicing moral reasoning. Objectives To showcase 3 different teaching strategies or methods, presenting for each of them: resources required, outcomes so far in terms of satisfaction and exam performance, as well as the pros and cons from the teacher's perspective. Results Flipped-classroom strategy: theoretical content is delivered outside the classroom, and the practice into the classroom. Works well but needs incentives for compliance in reading. Versatile debating Methods: from parliamentary debate, to role-playing, online debate, etc. Depending on the Case-study, some work better than others; in the online they practice written deliberation skills, but it is important to set rules. MOOC: Massive Online Open Courses in PHE. Can be used as independent teaching material, it is a great tool to introduce PHE into other PH areas and non-teaching environments. Conclusions So far, these methods have proven to increase students' motivation and engagement in Public Health Ethics. Key messages Practising reflection and debating skills is an essential part of PHE. Modern teaching strategies, more interactive and online-based, can help maximising the time spent in these activities. Although challenging and time-consuming at first, these methods also increase students' interest in PHE.

RESUMO Com o aumento da oferta na rede mundial de computadores dos chamados Cursos On-line Massivos e Abertos, mais conhecidos por seu acrônimo em inglês MOOCs (Massive Online Open Courses), cria-se a necessidade de que se pesquise de maneira mais aprofundada sua dinâmica, sua pedagogia e sua estrutura a fim de que se possa estabelecer um juízo sobre as possibilidades de uso efetivo desta nova ferramenta para o ensino de línguas estrangeiras. Neste trabalho, situado no âmbito das pesquisas em CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning), partimos da perspectiva da Teoria Conectivista, estabelecida, sobretudo, a partir dos estudos de Siemens e Downes, para analisar dois cursos de línguas estrangeiras na modalidade MOOC, oferecidos em diferentes plataformas digitais: o curso de espanhol para estrangeiros oferecido pela UNED em plataforma própria e o curso de mandarim para hispanofalantes veiculado pela plataforma UNIMOOC. Em ambos os casos, evidencia-se que os cursos não cumprem o que prometem, apresentando falhas no processo de ensino, sobretudo no que tange à necessidade de criar espaços propícios à interação. Este trabalho inscreve-se em uma proposta de pesquisa mais ampla, cujo objetivo é estabelecer critérios adequados para a criação de MOOCs para o ensino de línguas estrangeiras.
