Effect of Music Listening on Frontal EEG Asymmetry

Frontal EEG asymmetry has been recognized as a useful method in determining emotional states and psychophysiological conditions. For the current research, resting prefrontal EEG was measured before, during and after listening to sad music video. Data were recorded and analyzed using a wireless EEG module with digital results sent via Bluetooth to a remote computer for further analysis. The relative alpha power was utilized to determine EEG asymmetry indexes. The results indicated that even if a person had a stronger right hemisphere in the initial phase a significant shift first occurred during audio-video stimulation and was followed by a further inclination to left EEG asymmetry as measured after the stimulation. Furthermore the current research was able to use prefrontal EEG to produce results that were mostly measured at the frontal lobe. It was also able to provide significant changes in results using audio and video stimulation as to previous experiments that made use of audio stimulation. In the future, more experiments can be conducted to obtain a better understanding of a person’s appreciation or dislike toward a certain video, commercial or other multimedia contents through the aid of convenient EEG module.

When we look at bars flashed against a moving background, we see them displaced in the direction of the upcoming motion (flash-grab illusion). It is still debated whether these motion-induced position shifts are low-level, reflexive consequences of stimulus motion or high-level compensation engaged only when the stimulus is tracked with attention. To investigate whether attention is a causal factor for this striking illusory position shift, we evaluated the flash-grab illusion in six patients with damaged attentional networks in the right hemisphere and signs of left visual neglect and six age-matched controls. With stimuli in the top, right, and bottom visual fields, neglect patients experienced the same amount of illusion as controls. However, patients showed no significant shift when the test was presented in their left hemifield, despite having equally precise judgments. Thus, paradoxically, neglect patients perceived the position of the flash more veridically in their neglected hemifield. These results suggest that impaired attentional processes can reduce the interaction between a moving background and a superimposed stationary flash, and indicate that attention is a critical factor in generating the illusory motion-induced shifts of location.

Web services are applications that allow for communication between devices over the internet and are independent of the technology. The devices are built and use standardized eXtensible Markup Language (XML) for information exchange. A client or user is able to invoke a web service by sending an XML message and then gets back and XML response message. There are a number of communication protocols for web services that use the XML format such as Web Services Flow Language (WSFL), Blocks Extensible Exchange Protocol(BEEP) etc. Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) and Representational State Transfer (REST) are used options for accessing web services. It is not directly comparable that SOAP is a communications protocol while REST is a set of architectural principles for data transmission. In this paper, the data size of 1KB, 2KB, 4KB, 8KB and 16KB were tested each for Audio, Video and result obtained for CRUD methods. The encryption and decryption timings in milliseconds/seconds were recorded by programming extensibility points of a WCF REST web service in the Azure cloud..

*THIS PAPER HAS NOT YET BEEN PEER REVIEWED* Listening to music is a strategy many people use to regulate their emotions, especially sadness. However, there is disagreement about whether listening to music is a healthy way to regulate emotions, with some research finding that sad music worsens a sad state, especially for people high in rumination. To further explore the immediate consequences of music listening when sad 128 young adults (41% male, aged 18 to 25 years) were induced into a sad emotional state prior to random assignment to listening of either self-selected music, experimenter-selected sad music, or no music. Results revealed that listening to either self-selectedor experimenter-selected music led to a decrease in sadness. No difference was found between groups at post-listening. However, participants who listened to self-selected music reported a return to baseline levels of sadness, while this did not occur for participants who listened to experimenter-selected or were in the no music control. Rumination was also measured but did not moderate the impact of music listening on sadness for either musiccondition. Furthermore, there was no impact of rumination on participants’ perceptions of sadness in music. These results support the notion that listening to sad music does not worsen a sad state—even for those high in rumination—although it does appear to slow the emotion regulation process in cases where sad music is not self-selected.

As a rule, gender differences in the perception of human emotional states are studied on the basis of static pictures of face, gestures or poses. The dynamics and multiplicity of the emotion expression remain in the «blind zone». This work is aimed at finding relationships in the perception of the procedural characteristics of the emotion expression. The influence of gender and age on the identification of human emotional states is experimentally investigated in ecologically and socially valid situations. The experiments were based on the Russian-language version of the Geneva Emotion Recognition Test (GERT).83 audio-video clips of fourteen emotional states expressed by ten specially trained professional actors (five men and five women, average age 37 years) were randomly demonstrated to Russian participants (48 women and 48 men, Europeans, ages ranged from 20 to 62 years, with a mean age of 34 (SD = 9,4).It is shown that women recognize multimodal dynamic emotions more accurately, especially those which were expressed by women. Gender and age differences in identification accuracy are statistically significant for five emotions: joy, amusement, irritation, anger, and surprise. On women’s faces, joy, surprise, irritation and anger are more accurately recognized by women over 35 years of age (p<0,05).On male faces, surprise is less accurately recognized by men under 35 (p<0,05); amusement, irritation, anger — in men over 35 (p<0,05). The gender factor of perception of multimodal dynamic expressions of the state acts as a system of determinants that changes its characteristics depending on a specific communicative situation.
