Based on the concrete carbonization theory, we analyze the time when prestressed steel strands begin to corrode, and put forward the degradation time-dependent model for cross-sectional area of a corroding steel strand; with the comparison of existing research results, we propose the degradation time-dependent model for mechanical properties of corroded steel strands, including the nominal ultimate strength and nominal elastic modulus. We deduce a time-dependent model for the prestressing loss due to steel strand corrosion. Taking a prestressed concrete hollow slab bridge as an example, we analyze the time-dependent effect of the corroded strands on the concrete stress at serviceability limit state and flexural bearing capacity at ultimate limit state. Research shows that the bottom edge stress and flexural bearing capacity at mid-span of the beams will reduce sharply if the prestressed strands corrode, even corrosion can damage the safety of bridge in just a few years. These results can be for information of further experiments and researches.

With the bridge member resistance deterioration and traffic volume increasing on the bridge, bridge reliability considering time-variant factors has become an important problem. This paper presents a method to estimate the bridge safety performance based on time-dependent model of resistance decreasing and load change. Power form functions are used to fit the resistance degradation models in three environmental conditions, and time-dependent model of load increasing is built in accordance with traffic observation results somewhere. The results show that normal distribution probability model can be used to fit dead load time-varying model. In analysis, the most disadvantageous load combination effect is mainly considered, live load time-varying function approximately follows extreme type I distribution model. Finally the proposed approach combined with Monte Carlo method is used to assess the time-varying reliability index and the safe serving time of one prestressed concrete bridge in use.

A time-dependent quasi-one-dimensional model is developed for studying high- pressure discharges in ablative capillaries used, for example, as plasma sources in electrothermal launchers. The main features of the model are (i) consideration of ablation effects in each of the continuity, momentum and energy equations; (ii) use of a non-ideal equation of state; and (iii) consideration of space- and time-dependent ionization.
