To ascertain the grounding corrosion coefficient parking on the ground is the key to evaluate the airframe calendar life. The influence of pull and press load on the grounding corrosion coefficient was evaluated in this paper. The main results are as follows. First, the fatigue life always follows the logarithmic normal distribution after pre-corrosion for pull fatigue loading and press fatigue loading. But the scatter of fatigue life for the wing down-panels is reduced with the fatigue life, and the scatter of fatigue life for the wing up-panels is not changed. The second, the coefficient of the wing up-panels test sample is not changed with the increase of the corrosion calendar life. But, the coefficient of the wing down-panels test sample descends with the increase of the corrosion calendar life.

The main objective of this paper is to present prototype of wing spar joint using CATIA V5 software to study the behavior of wing spar joint as per actual working condition and to perform structural analysis of the wing spar joint based on condition of cyclic loading (fatigue loading). Determining the loading modes in the spar joint is subjected to static load and fatigue loads which should be taken into account in the evaluation of the strength and fatigue life. Initially, the components were modeled with CATIA V5 and imported to MSC PATRAN; MSC NASTRAN is used as a solver. From the obtained maximum tensile stresses, fatigue analysis was carried out to find fatigue life of the spar joint with different fatigue load spectra.

This paper presents fatigue behaviors and the stiffness degradation law of concrete continuous beams with external prestressed carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons. Three specimens were tested under fatigue loading, and the influence of different load levels on the stiffness degradation and fatigue life were studied, and it was found that the stiffness degradation of three test specimens exhibited a three-stage change rule, namely rapid decrease, stable degradation, and sharp decline, but there are obvious differences in the rate and amplitude of stiffness degradation. The load level has a significant influence on the fatigue life of the test specimens. An analytical model with load level considered was proposed to calculate the residual stiffness and predict the stiffness degradation, which is in good agreement with the test results. The model of stiffness degradation presents a possible solution for practical engineering applications of concrete continuous beams with externally prestressed CFRP tendons subjected to different fatigue loadings.

The forging die material, a high strength steel designated W513 is considered in this paper. A fatigue damage model, based on thermodynamics and continuum damage mechanics, is constructed in which both the previous damage and the loading sequence are considered. The unknown material parameters in the model are identified from low cycle fatigue tests. Damage evolution under multi-level fatigue loading is investigated. The results show that the fatigue life is closely related to the loading sequence. The fatigue life of the materials with low fatigue loading first followed by high fatigue loading is longer than that for the reversed loading sequence.

Nozzles in cylindrical vessels have been of special interest to designers for some time and have offered a field of activity for many research workers. This paper presents some static and fatigue tests on five designs of full size pressure vessel nozzles manufactured in two materials. Supporting and other published work is reviewed showing that on the basis of the same maximum stress mild steel vessels give the same fatigue life as low alloy vessels. When compared on the basis of current codes it is shown that mild steel vessels may have five to ten times the fatigue life of low alloy vessels unless special precautions are taken.

Polycrystalline conventional casting (CC) and directionally solidified (DS) Ni base superalloys are widely used as gas turbine blade materials. It was reported that the surface of a gas turbine blade is subjected to a biaxial tensile-compressive fatigue loading during a start-stop operation, based on finite element stress analysis results. It is necessary to establish the life prediction method of these superalloys under biaxial fatigue loading for reliable operations. In this study, the in-plane biaxial fatigue tests with different phases of x and y directional strain cycles were conducted on both CC and DS Ni base superalloys (IN738LC and GTD111DS) at high temperatures. The strain ratio ϕ was defined as the ratio between the x and y directional strains at 1/4 cycle and was varied from 1 to −1. In ϕ=1 and −1. The main cracks propagated in both the x and y directions in the CC superalloy. On the other hand, the main cracks of the DS superalloy propagated only in the x direction, indicating that the failure resistance in the solidified direction is weaker than that in the direction normal to the solidified direction. Although the biaxial fatigue life of the CC superalloy was correlated with the conventional Mises equivalent strain range, that of the DS superalloy depended on ϕ. The new biaxial fatigue life criterion, equivalent normal strain range for the DS superalloy was derived from the iso-fatigue life curve on a principal strain plane defined in this study. Fatigue life of the DS superalloy was correlated with the equivalent normal strain range. Fatigue life of the DS superalloy under equibiaxial fatigue loading was significantly reduced by introducing compressive strain hold dwell. Life prediction under equibiaxial fatigue loading with the compressive strain hold was successfully made by the nonlinear damage accumulation model. This suggests that the proposed method can be applied to life prediction of the gas turbine DS blades, which are subjected to biaxial fatigue loading during operation.

This investigation examines the effects of different finishing processes on the fatigue life of premachined holes in Assab 760 steel plates. The finishing processes studied were reaming, ballizing, and emery polishing. A general decrease in fatigue life with increase in surface roughness is observed for all the processes employed. In comparing the different processes, for a constant surface roughness, polishing is generally found to give the longest fatigue life while ballizing, in spite of the greater compressive residual stresses induced on the surface of the finished hole, the shortest. The surprising phenomenon was found to be attributed to the amount of plastic deformation occurred before fatigue loading. For Assab 760 steel, a prestrain in the radial direction of less than about 2.5 percent appeared to reduce the fatigue resistance of the material.

The aim of the study is to investigate and to prove that the fatigue failure of steel is initiated from the surface. Hence the preventif action of smoothening the surface that has been loaded by fatigue loading is very important. The specimen of AISI 1045 Steel is loaded by means of rotary bending fatigue. The fatigue loading will be interupted as the fatigue life reaching 50% of fatigue life and 75% of fatigue life. During the interuption the specimen will be grinded and polished, before tested completely until fatigue fracture occured. The fatigue life of each group of scpecimen based on the art of loading will be compared to the specimen tested by fatigue loading without interuption.The Miner rule is used to evaluated the test result. The influence of interuption and surface treatment is evaluated and analyzed. ABSTRAKTujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki dan membuktikan bahwa kegagalan kelelahan baja dimulai dari permukaan. Oleh karena itu tindakan pencegahan dengan memperhalus permukaan sangat penting untuk mencegah beban kelelahan baja. Spesimen dari AISI 1045 Steel dimuat dengan cara uji kelelahan lentur putar. Kelelahan pemuatan akan disela sebagai umur kelelahan mencapai 50% dari umur kelelahan dan 75% dari umur kelelahan. Selama gangguan lainnya yang spesimen akan digiling dan dipoles, sebelum diuji benar-benar sampai patah akibat kelelahan yang terjadi. Umur kelelahan dari setiap kelompok specimen diuji berdasarkan beban akan dibandingkan dengan spesimen oleh kelelahan bongkar tanpa aturan. The Miner rule digunakan untuk mengevaluasi hasil tes. Pengaruh gangguan lainnya dan perlakuan permukaan dievaluasi dan dianalisis.

The results of experimental verification of Zenner and Lius criterion confirm its efficiency in the case of estimation of fatigue life for proportional loading. Due to application of general damage parameter, the criterion is useful in case of various types of proportional loading and for multiple materials. However, for non-proportional loadings, of high non-proportionality level, the error of estimation of fatigue lives often exceeds scatter band 3. The hereby work presents a proposal for Zenner and Lius criterion modification based upon introduction of loading non-proportionality measure with minimum circumscribed ellipse method (MCE).

Fatigue damage is initiated through some “defects” on the surfaces of and/or inside the component and induced by the fatigue cyclic loadings. These “defects” are randomly scattered in components, and one of these “defects” will be randomly “activated” and finally developed to become the initial crack which causes the final fatigue failure. Therefore, the fatigue strength is inherently a random variable and should be treated by probabilistic models such as typical P-S-N curves. The fatigue cyclic loading could be presented or described in any form. But the fatigue loading spectrum can generally be grouped as and described by these five models: (1) a single constant cyclic stress (loading) with a given cyclic number, (2) a single constant cyclic stress with a distributed cyclic number, (3) a distributed cyclic stress (loading) at a given fatigue life (cyclic number), (4) multiple constant cyclic stress levels with given cyclic numbers, and (5) multiple constant cyclic stress levels with distributed cyclic numbers. The approaches for determining the reliability of components under fatigue loading spectrum of the models 1∼4 are available in literature and books. But few articles and books have addressed an approach for determining the reliability of components under the fatigue loading spectrum of the model 5. This paper will propose two approaches for addressing this unsolved issue. Two examples will be presented to implement the proposed approaches with detailed procedures.
