The arc furnace is a common load in smelting industry. Due to special structure, it often generates great impact on the grid. It has become a recognized technical means to use dynamic reactive compensation device SVC to eliminate the adverse impacts on grid power quality during arc furnace production. However, the electrical system of some arc furnace load containing sites is complex. Limited by the site condition in which sound commissioning environment cannot be provided for SVC, relevant control parameters can only be configured on the basis of experience, which leads to poor compensation effect, and thus affecting normal production of the user.

In the present rural power grid reconstruction project ,according to the problems of capacitor reactive power compensation in rural small substation. Take a small substation for instance, according to its operation and control method, set the criterion of the capacitor bank switching. A new high reliability, flexible reactive power compensation control device based on s7-200 PLC is designed. It plays an important role in improving the power supply , guaranteeing the quality of voltage, reducing the loss of rural power gid.

Although there are many studies on application of FACTS unit, especially application of reactive power generating unit for power system to enhance voltage stability amplitude and transient stability as considered, the evaluation and selection of suitable power generating unit (STATCOM or SVC) as well as optimal compensation size in the analysis of steady and transient state is not paid attention to. This article studies the above described issues to give a solution to install reasonable reactive power generating source (kind of Var source, location, size) for the power system. The analysis will be based on the technical factors rather than economic ones. 500kV grid system in Vietnam will be used in the calculation until 2015. To deeply evaluate, the implementation plan of reactive power compensation was only studied for 500kV grid in the South, where the load demand is large and can be dramatically increased. The results of power flow calculation, the analysis of characteristics of PV, OPF, and transient stability were studied through PSS/E-30 software.

TCR-TSC static reactive power compensator (SVC) is the most widely used in the field of power system reactive power compensation. This type of reactive power compensator can not only compensate the reactive power required in the power system, but also handle the over-compensation problem well. This paper will establish a MATLAB simulation model to simulate the TCR-TSC SVC, focusing on the dynamic reactive power compensation characteristics of the TCR-TSC SVC in suppressing voltage fluctuations. The simulation results show that the TCR-TSC SVC has a better dynamic reactive power compensation effect.

In recent years, power companies in different provinces have equipped the rural power grid substation with SVG, which has effectively resolved the problems of rural power grid such as low voltage and great fluctuation. Since SVG is a new 3G dynamic reactive compensation technology, people don’t know its compensation feature well. SVG control parameters are not configured according to the operation rules of the rural power grid substation.SVG shall undergo field test before commissioning in order to better resolve the problem of low voltage. Electrical property of the system to be compensated is known through the interaction between SVG and the system, thus determining the actual compensation mode and control parameters of SVG, thus achieving the best compensation effect.
