Recently buildings have undergone many changes with more high-rise, larger and more complex structures being developed. All over the world, safety designs for buildings are being established through a variety of experiments and analysis of the planning and design stage of a comprehensive and scientific performance-based safety design for evacuation. In this study, this study seeks to present development directions for criteria related to domestic evacuation safety assessment through case studies. As a results, it is necessary to develop simulation programs as well as fire and evacuation scenarios that reflect domestic characteristics such as human behavior characteristics and space and occupants’ speed of movement so that appropriate performance-based design can be established. In addition, as the evacuation safety assessment-related standards are being manifested in building law and fire prevention regulations, it is determined that the need to develop integrated codes is immediate.

After a major seismic event, structural safety inspections by qualified experts are required prior to reoccupying a building and resuming operation. Such manual inspections are generally performed by teams of two or more experts and are time consuming, labor intensive, subjective in nature, and potentially put the lives of the inspectors in danger. The authors reported previously on the system for a rapid post-earthquake safety assessment of buildings using sparse acceleration data. The proposed framework was demonstrated using simulation of a five-story steel building modeled with three-dimensional nonlinear analysis subjected to historical earthquakes. The results confirmed the potential of the proposed approach for rapid safety evaluation of buildings after seismic events. However, experimental validation on large-scale structures is required prior to field implementation. Moreover, an extension to the assessment of high-rise buildings, such as those commonly used for residences and offices in modern cities, is needed. To this end, a 1/3-scale 18-story experimental steel building tested on the shaking table at E-Defense in Japan is considered. The importance of online model updating of the linear building model used to calculate the Damage Sensitive Features (DSFs) during the operation is also discussed. Experimental results confirm the efficacy of the proposed approach for rapid post-earthquake safety evaluation for high-rise buildings. Finally, a cost-benefit analysis with respect to the number of sensors used is presented.

The construction of regional financial center can gather a large amount of financial production elements and capital, which plays an important role in promoting regional economic development. Based on this, the analysis of the planning and design of regional financial center based on the financial structure was studied. Firstly, the research progress of regional financial center and financial structure was expounded. Then, on the basis of the functional demand of the financial center, the planning and design method of the regional financial center was put forward. The regional center building in Nanjing was taken as an example, and the specific planning and design of the traffic, super high-rise landmark buildings, squares and other buildings were analyzed with the advantage of location. The research shows that the design and planning of the regional financial center can provide the new coordinates of globalization for the local finance.

PurposeThe self-cleaning properties of nanostructured titanium dioxide facade coatings are useful in Singapore's tropical climate. However, its potential maintenance issues need to be determined right at the design stage. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the development of the design for maintainability tool which is a multicriteria design decision score sheet that evaluates the maintainability potential of nano-facade coating applications on high-rise façades with concrete and stonemasonry finishes and curtain walls.Design/methodology/approachQuantitative methods (expert and practitioner surveys) are conducted in this research study. Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and sensitivity analysis were used to develop a robust Design for Maintainability tool.FindingsSafety measures indicator received the highest weighted score by experts, while the maximizing performance, minimizing risk, minimizing negative environmental impact and minimizing consumption of matter and energy were the top ranking main criteria by both experts and practitioners. The top ranked design for maintainability sub-criteria identified by practitioners and experts were risk management, maintenance considerations, climatic conditions, safety measures, lifecycle cost and maintenance access, sun's path, rainfall intensity, biological growth measures and building age profile.Originality/valueMost researches on the maintainability of nano-façade coatings uses experimentation to test the durability of nano-façade coatings, while this study focuses on design based empirical data such as establishing and ranking the list of design for maintainability criteria or indicators to minimize future defects and maintenance issues. The design for maintainability tool contributes to the maintainability of nano-façade coatings leading to maximizing its performance while minimizing cost, risks, resource consumption and negative environmental impact.

The author proposed the Vortex-induced Motion (VIM) simulation method of a semi-submersible type offshore floating structure using the wake oscillator model based on the potential theory and model test data. This method is easy to use for the time-domain simulation of the VIM amplitude, that is in-line, transverse and yaw motions, of the semi-submersible floater in case of being demented mooring safety assessment of that. The simulation method presented in this paper was modified the single circular floater simulation method with the wake oscillator model for a semi-submersible floater. Some empirical parameters, obtained from the systematic model tests used many semi-submersible floaters, are only decided from external form of the semi-submersible floaters, that is the column / lower hull ratio etc. This simulation method is able to indicate general VIM trend and to be used for the assessment of mooring lines safety in the design stage. Using the VIM amplitude simulation, fatigue damage of mooring lines on one sample semi-submersible floater was investigated as an example.
