In this study, a new type of double-pontoon floating breakwater was designed to improve the wave attenuation performance through the addition of suspended Savonius propeller-blade. Its hydrodynamic characteristics were studied through numerical simulations and performance-testing experiment. The following investigations were performed in this study: Firstly, wave theory and hydrodynamic theory were combined to calculate the wave attenuation performance and motion response of double-pontoon floating breakwater under linear wave conditions. The numerical results showed that the wave attenuation performance was better under a specific wave period and height, the transmission coefficient reached a relatively small value, and the mooring line tension responded periodically and satisfied the condition of maximum breaking force. Secondly, three key geometric parameters of breakwater were researched, including the relative spacing of pontoons, the relative spacing between pontoons and blades, and the height–diameter ratio of Savonius blades. The calculation results showed that the pontoon spacing was closer to the wavelength and the breakwater wave attenuation performance was better. Lastly, experimental tests were also performed on the new double-pontoon floating breakwater and the results showed that the wave attenuation performance and numerical projections were basically the same, which verified the validity and effectiveness of the design method.

Floating wind turbine vibration controlling becomes more and more important with the increase in wind turbine size. Thus, a novel three-bifurcated mooring system is proposed for Spar-type floating wind turbines. Compared with the original mooring system using three mooring lines, three-bifurcated sub-mooring-lines are added into the novel mooring system. Specifically, each three-bifurcated sub-mooring-line is first connected to a Spar-type platform using three fairleads, then it is connected to the anchor using the main mooring line. Six fairleads are involved in the proposed mooring system, theoretically resulting in larger overturning and torsional stiffness. For further improvement, a clump mass is attached onto the main mooring lines of the proposed mooring system. The wind turbine surge, pitch, and yaw movements under regular and irregular waves are calculated to quantitatively examine the mooring system performances. A recommended configuration for the proposed mooring system is presented: the three-bifurcated sub-mooring-line and main mooring line lengths should be (0.0166, 0.0111, 0.0166) and 0.9723 times the total mooring line length in the traditional mooring system. The proposed mooring system can at most reduce the wind turbine surge movement 37.15% and 54.5% when under regular and irregular waves, respectively, and can at most reduce the yaw movement 30.1% and 40% when under regular and irregular waves, respectively.

Spatially explicit data on tidal and waves are required as part of coastal monitoring applications (e.g., radar monitoring of coastal change) for the design of interventions to mitigate the impacts of climate change. A deployment over two tidal cycles of a low-cost Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) buoy at Rossall (near Fleetwood), UK demonstrated the potential to record good quality sea level and wave data within the intertidal zone. During each slack water and the following ebb tide, the sea level data were of good quality and comparable with data from nearby tide gauges on the national tide gauge network. Moreover, the GNSS receiver was able to capture wave information and these compared well with data from a commercial wave buoy situated 9.5 km offshore. Discontinuities were observed in the elevation data during flood tide, coincident with high accelerations and losing satellite signal lock. These were probably due to strong tidal currents, which, combined with spilling waves, would put the mooring line under tension and allow white water to spill over the antenna resulting in the periodic loss of GNSS signals, hence degrading the vertical solutions.

This study was aimed at investigating a floating solar photovoltaic (FPV) system by numerical and experimental simulations under wave and wind loads to analyze the motion characteristics of the platform, the tension of the mooring line, and the pressure and uplift coefficient of panels at 2.5 m/5 m water depth conditions. The floating platform was installed with four rows of solar panels, each row with five panels, attached with four catenary types of mooring lines at the corner of the platform. The numerical model was based on ANSYS AQWA and ANSYS FLUENT (ANSYS Inc., Canonsburg, PA, USA). The experiment model was a scaled FPV platform with four rows of panels scaled in the 1:4 scale ratio. The results obtained from the experiment and numerical simulation achieved a good agreement. The results show that under normal sea conditions, the FPV system may resonate in a high frequency of wave condition, and a larger lift force occurred at the windward surface. Under extreme sea conditions, the pitch motion of the floating platform changed about ±6° without overturning; however, the wind will cause a large drift of the floating platform and the vortex area formed, which will cause damage to the solar panel.

Abstract Floating wind turbines (FWTs) with shared mooring systems can be one of the most cost- effective solutions in reducing mooring costs. First, the static configuration of a shared line is estimated using the elastic catenary equation. The present study investigates the global responses of two FWT with a shared mooring system. Two shared mooring configurations with different horizontal distances between the FWTs are considered. In the first configuration, the FWTs are placed 750m apart; and in the second configuration, they are placed 1000m apart. Two different environmental conditions (ECs) are used to simulate the global responses of the system in time domain. The shared mooring line results in higher extreme motions in surge and sway (degree of freedoms) DOFs due to the reduction of mooring restoring stiffness. The lower mooring restoring stiffness can be attributed to the reduction of one seabed anchoring point for each FWT as compared to a single FWT with three anchors installed. In the rotational DOFs, the shared mooring line configurations result in slight mean offset in each direction and significant increase in the motion standard deviations. This is caused by the reduced mooring stiffness associated with the change in platform orientation.

Offshore wind energy, a clean energy resource, is considered to be a possible alternative to fossil energy. Floating offshore wind technology is considered to be a proper concept to develop abundant wind energy in deep water. Considering the reality of offshore wind energy development in China, the floating offshore wind turbine concept is expected to be developed at moderate water depths. In this paper, a mooring system of the WindFloat semisubmersible floating offshore wind turbine (SFOWT) at a water depth of 60 m is designed. The dynamic responses of the WindFloat SFOWT under different wind–wave combination conditions are investigated using the coupled method and the simplified method, which do not include the effect of the tower top motion in the aerodynamic calculation. The results show that the dynamic responses of the WindFloat SFOWT, including the platform motions, tower loads, and mooring line tensions, perform fairly well at a moderate water depth. A comparison between the coupled method and simplified method shows that the calculated results are slightly different between the different conditions for the time domain results, response spectra results, and fatigue results. In addition, mooring line 1 (ML 1) suffers higher fatigue damage than ML2, which should be paid more attention.
