Cadmium Accumulation and Antioxidative Defenses in Leaves of Zea mays L.

Corn (Zea Mays L.) seedlings were in four cadmium (Cd) levels of 0-1mg/L in a hydroponic system to analyze the antioxidant enzyme system, Cd content in the shoots and roots and growth responces in the leaves of corn. There was a significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration from Cd 0mg/L to 1mg/L, and peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) activities in the leaves of corn subjected to 0-1mg/L Cd. However there was a significant decrease in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities subjected to 0-1mg/L Cd. This indicated that Cd stress induced an oxidative stress response in corn seedlings, characterized by an accumulation of MDA, decrease in activities of SOD and increase in activities of POD and CAT. Root and leaf Cd contents of corn increased with their exposure Cd level, and the highest Cd concentration occurred in roots, followed by leaves.

This indicated that Cd stress induced an oxidative stress response in corn seedlings, characterized by a decrease in activities of SOD and chl concentration. Root and shoot Cd contents of corn increased with their exposure Cd level, and the highest Cd concentration occurred in roots, followed by leaves.

This study was carried out to show the effect of diallyldisulphide (DADS), an important organosulphur compound found in garlic ( Allium sativum ), on antioxidant systems in Candida species. Changes in antioxidant metabolites and antioxidant activity in the presence of DADS were found in Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis . Candida cells were treated with sublethal concentrations of DADS. DADS caused a decrease in the activity of all antioxidant enzymes except catalase, resulting in oxidative stress and damaged cells. The amount of oxidative stress generated by DADS was found to be a function of its concentration. A significant decrease in superoxide dismutase, glutathione-S-transferase, and glutathione peroxidase activities but an increase in catalase activity were observed. Increased levels of lipid peroxidation and decreased levels of glutathione were observed in treated cells. Activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase decreased significantly following DADS treatment and could be correlated with a decrease in glutathione concentration in both Candida species. These results indicate that diallyl disulphide acts as a pro-oxidant to Candida species and hence may act as a potent antifungal in the management of candidiasis.

We decreased the level of gonadal steroids in female and male mice by gonadectomy. We infected these mice withP. bergheiANKA and observed the subsequent impact on the oxidative stress response. Intact females developed lower levels of parasitaemia and lost weight faster than intact males. Gonadectomised female mice displayed increased levels of parasitaemia, increased body mass, and increased anaemia compared with their male counterparts. In addition, gonadectomised females exhibited lower specific catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase activities in their blood and spleen tissues compared with gonadectomised males. To further study the oxidative stress response inP. bergheiANKA-infected gonadectomised mice, nitric oxide levels were assessed in the blood and spleen, and MDA levels were assessed in the spleen. Intact, sham-operated, and gonadectomised female mice exhibited higher levels of nitric oxide in the blood and spleen compared with male mice. MDA levels were higher in all of the female groups. Finally, gonadectomy significantly increased the oxidative stress levels in females but not in males. These data suggest that differential oxidative stress is influenced by oestrogens that may contribute to sexual dimorphism in malaria.
