Nonlinear Performance Simulation of RC Structures with Small-Scaled Model in Earthquake Simulation Test

For small-scale RC structure model in earthquake simulation test, the material behavior of the model is hard to resemble the prototype well so that the model cannot simulate correctly the nonlinear performance of the prototype. On the basis of the dynamic similitude of mechanical behavior between common concrete and micro-concrete which derive from mechanical behavior tests, the simplified equivalent dynamic similitude relations, which are applicable to the nonlinear performance simulation with small-scale RC structure models in the earthquake simulation tests, have been proposed. By the numerical simulation of earthquake simulation tests and the deviation analysis, the dynamic simulation experimental method has been verified. In addition, for small-scaled RC model, to consider the similitude harmony between concrete and reinforcement used in the model, by adjusting the reinforcement and stirrup, or the effective section height (h0) and hoop spacing etc., simple element testing, shaking table test and numerical simulation were carried out to verify this model design method. Thus, it’s realizable that the small-scaled RC model can simulate correctly the nonlinear performance of the prototype.

Carbon-like materials such as the anode and the ramming paste play a crucial role in the efficiency of the Hall–Héroult process. The mechanical behavior of these materials during forming processes is complex and still ill-understood. This work aimed to investigate experimentally the mechanical behavior of a carbon paste used in the aluminum industry under different loading conditions. For this purpose, experiments consisting of (1) relaxation tests at different compaction levels, (2) quasi-static cyclic tests at several amplitudes, (3) monotonic compaction tests at varied strain rates, and (4) vibrocompaction tests at different frequencies were carried out. The obtained results highlight some fundamental aspects of the carbon paste behavior such as the strain rate’s effect on the paste compressibility, the hardening-softening behavior under cyclic loadings, the effect of cycling amplitude on the stress state and the paste densification, and the frequency effect on the vibrocompaction process. These results pave the way for the development of reliable rheological models for the modeling and the numerical simulation of carbon pastes forming processes.

AbstractDirect numerical simulation (DNS) of an impinging jet flow with a nozzle-to-plate distance of two jet diameters and a Reynolds number of 10 000 is carried out at high spatial resolution using high-order numerical methods. The flow configuration is designed to enable the development of a fully turbulent regime with the appearance of a well-marked secondary maximum in the radial distribution of the mean heat transfer. The velocity and temperature statistics are validated with documented experiments. The DNS database is then analysed focusing on the role of unsteady processes to explain the spatial distribution of the heat transfer coefficient at the wall. A phenomenological scenario is proposed on the basis of instantaneous flow visualisations in order to explain the non-monotonic radial evolution of the Nusselt number in the stagnation region. This scenario is then assessed by analysing the wall temperature and the wall shear stress distributions and also through the use of conditional averaging of velocity and temperature fields. On one hand, the heat transfer is primarily driven by the large-scale toroidal primary and secondary vortices emitted periodically. On the other hand, these vortices are subjected to azimuthal distortions associated with the production of radially elongated structures at small scale. These distortions are responsible for the appearance of very high heat transfer zones organised as cold fluid spots on the heated wall. These cold spots are shaped by the radial structures through a filament propagation of the heat transfer. The analysis of probability density functions shows that these strong events are highly intermittent in time and space while contributing essentially to the secondary peak observed in the radial evolution of the Nusselt number.

The objective of this work is to experimentally and numerically evaluate small-scale cryosurgery using an ultrafine cryoprobe. The outer diameter (OD) of the cryoprobe was 550 μm. The cooling performance of the cryoprobe was tested with a freezing experiment using hydrogel at 37 °C. As a result of 1 min of cooling, the surface temperature of the cryoprobe reached −35 °C and the radius of the frozen region was 2 mm. To evaluate the temperature distribution, a numerical simulation was conducted. The temperature distribution in the frozen region and the heat transfer coefficient was discussed.

Small-scale concave spherical pits, which have a special effect on heat transfer enhancement and turbulent drag reduction, are investigated by numerical simulation in detail. Two kinds of small-scale concave pits structures are designed on surface of a plate, which are located in the bottom of a rectangle channel. The characteristics of heat transfer and flow in channel are investigated and compared with a same channel with plate bottom by means of LES. Flow structure and temperature distribution near the pits are analyzed. The numerical simulation results indicate that the concave spherical pits disturb the flow field and vortex is induced by the pits. The turbulent coherent structure is affected by the induced vortex. The numerical simulation indicates that small scale pit can generate the vortex in couple. The range of vortex is accord with the array of small scale pit. The small scale pit can enhance the intensity of vortex. As a result, the temperature field near the pit is changed with generation of the vortex. The heat transfer mechanism on plate with small scale concave spherical pit is summarized.

A radiator is one of the most important components in vehicular cooling system whose excellent fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics guarantees the engine operations. The calculation workload for performance simulation of a whole radiator is too huge due to its size. Experimental study is the conventional method to study radiator performance. This paper put forward a numerical simulation method and radiator heat transfer units were taken as study objects. Orthogonal experiment method was adopted to arrange multi-factor and multi-level calculation schemes. 23 samples with different fin parameters were simulated to investigate their thermal-hydraulic performances. Compared with experimental testing, this method greatly reduced sample manufacturing cost and testing cost, and offered data support for the effect factor study of radiator heat transfer units.

Abstract The present study deals with the constitutive modeling for the mechanical behavior of rubber with filler particles. An analytical model is developed to predict the mechanical properties of rubber with added filler particles based on experimental observation. To develop the same, a continuum mechanics-based hyperelasticity theory is utilized. The model is validated with the experimental results of the chloroprene and nitrile butadiene rubbers filled with different volume fractions of carbon black and carbon nanoparticles, respectively. The findings of the model agree well with the experimental results. In general, the developed model will be helpful to the materialist community working in characterizing the material behavior of tires and other rubber-like materials.

The as-built material behavior of additive manufactured (AM) Titanium (Ti) 6Al-4V is investigated in this study. A solution heat treated, aged, stress relieved, and hot isostatic pressed Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) AM process was used to manufacture the specimens of interest. The motivation behind this work is based on the ever-growing desire of aerospace system designers to use AM to fabricate components with novel geometries. Specifically, there is keen interest in AM components with complex internal cooling configurations such as turbine blades, nozzle vanes, and heat exchangers that can improve small scale propulsion performance. Though it is feasible to three-dimensionally print parts that meet the Fit portion of a part characteristic description and identification, the Form and Function portions have proven to be more difficult to conquer. This study addresses both the Form and Function characteristics of the LPBF AM process via the investigation of geometry variation and surface roughness effects pertaining to mechanical properties and fatigue behavior of Ti 6Al-4V. Results show that geometry variation may be the cause of increased vibration fatigue life uncertainty. Also, both fatigue and tensile properties show profound discrepancies associated with surface finish. As-built surface finish specimens have lower fatigue and ductility performance, but the results are more consistent than polished data.
