The three-dimensional finite element model of cabin glass with surface scratch is built using the finite element software ANSYS, which is aimed to analyze the detailed stress around the scratch route tip. Then the fatigue notch factor can be gained through utilizing of results from three-dimensional model, which is followed by the estimation of fatigue life based on local stress-strain method. It is found that the stress around scratch route tip is nearly linearly increased with the increasing of tip depth (0.2mm<h<0.8mm) and the fatigue performances of cabin glass with surface scratch are sensitive to scratch depth. Finally, fatigue tests are carried out with the specimens of different scratch route tip depths, and validation against fatigue life by local stress-strain method and experimental data shows a good agreement, which indicates that the scratch model and the local stress-strain method for the effects of scratch on cabin glass fatigue performances are valid.

The influence of residual stesses must be considered in bending fatigue life prediction of fillet rolling crankshafts. In this paper, the stress/strain distributions near fillet during fatigue tests are calculated by finite element method. In residual stress computation, the three dimensional flexible contact model is adopted, and in bending strain computation, the static analysis are selected. Then, bending fatigue life prediction is performed by local stress-strain approach based on the residual stess and bending strain amplitude, and the results agree with the bending fatigue test.

The principle of fatigue life computation was presented on the basis of local stress-strain method. It was set up that the finite element model of stepped shaft with different radii of round corner and radius ratios. The local stress and strain were computed at shaft shoulder fillet under torsion load. The fatigue crack initiation life was determined by means of local stress-strain method under symmetric cyclic torsion load. The result showed that the fatigue life increased with the values of fillet increase and decreased with the values of radius ratio increase, and the smaller of the transition radius was, the shorter of the life would be.

In port crane industry, the surface hardening technique is widely used in order to improve the strength of wheel. But the hardening depth is chosen only by according to the experience, and the effect of different hardened depths is not studied theoretically. In this paper, the contact stresses in wheel with different hardening depth have been analyzed by applying three-dimensional finite element model. Based on this model, the ANSYS10.0 finite element software is used. The elastic wheel is used to verify the numerical results with the Hertz’s theory. Three different hardening depths, namely 10mm, 25mm and whole hardened wheel, under three different vertical loads were applied. The effect of hardening depth of a surface hardened wheel is discussed by comparing the contact stresses and contact areas from the numerical results.

New full hall scaffolds with pulley-clip style formwork support system is adopted in the concert hall of Changsha. This paper presents the concept of the complete equivalent initial imperfection according to the characteristics of too many influential factors on the high formwork supporting frame, then makes the complete equivalent initial imperfectione equivalent to assumed equivalent horizontal load in order to ensure the safety of the frame. At the same time, it gets a three-dimensional model by the general finite element software ANSYS 10.0. Based on the results of experiment and finite element analysis, it gets the recommended value of assumed equivalent horizontal load. The study on the high formwork supporting frame with pulley-clip style provides some reference for other similar projects.

The seismic analysis on reactor structure was performed with a new generation of finite element software. The amount of freedom degree of the model was more than twenty millions. The typical responses to operational basis earthquake excitation were given. They are larger than those with two-dimensional simplified finite element method, and the reasons of this phenomenon were analyzed. The feasibility of seismic analysis on large-scale three-dimensional finite element model under existing hardware condition was demonstrated, so some technological reserves for dynamic analysis on complicated equipments or systems in nuclear engineering are provided.

For flexible pipelines, the influence of backfill compaction on the deformation of the pipe has always been the focus of researchers. Through the finite element software, a three-dimensional soil model matching the exterior wall corrugation of the high-density polyethylene pipe was skillfully established, and the “real” finite element model of pipe-soil interaction verified the accuracy through field test. Based on the model, the strain distribution at any position of the buried HDPE pipe can be obtained. Changing the location and extent of the loose backfill, the strain and radial displacement distributions of the interior and exterior walls of the HDPE pipe under different backfill conditions when external load applied to the foundation were analyzed, and the dangerous parts of the pipe where local buckling and fracture may occur were identified. It is pointed out that when the backfill is loose, near the interface between the backfill loose region and the well-compacted region, the maximum circumferential strain occurs frequently, the exterior wall strain is more likely to increase greatly on the region near crown or invert, the interior wall strains increase in amplitude at springline, and the location of the loose region has a greater influence on the strain of the pipe than the size of the loose area.

In recent years, the self-elevating derrick substructure which with the characteristics of easy to install、remove and transfer are gradually replacing layer box, box block substructure, etc. The three-dimensional finite element model of the MXD-701 jack-up derrick and substructure, which is used to analyze static properties of the petroleum substructure under the six different working loads are built by the ANSYS finite element software. Meanwhile, the wireless structural testing system(STS-WiFi)is testing at the MXD-701 petroleum substructure. Then comparing of the model results and testing results. Analysis results indicate that the stress of the substructure at the two beam table is greatest, the stress of the upper part of the guy column is much greater, and others are low, but in general, the overall substructure can fit the requirements of the strength and intensity. The compared results can accurately reflect the project structure of the stress and strain. Then, we can get the capacity of the substructure in order to provide evidence to the security situation of the substructure. It will have great significance to enrich and develop the mast base design and safety assessment theory.

The fatigue life of hexagon head and socket head bolts, attached to vehicle a wheel, is assessed and the estimation of the residual life of existing bolts in vehicle wheel is investigated. Field- measured load histories were applied in this test. Tensile tests and fatigue tests were performed to evaluate the effect of tightening torque and to obtain the basic experimental data. A three-dimensional finite element analysis was also performed to evaluate the local stress fields. Miner’s rule was used to predict the fatigue life of bolts. The results indicate the prediction of fatigue life of the bolts was in good agreement with the real life of vehicle wheel bolts in this test.

Scratches on the metal bearing surface of metal-on-polyethylene total joint replacements have been found to appreciably accelerate abrasive/adhesive wear of polyethylene, and constitute a source of the considerable variability of wear rate seen within clinical cohorts. Scratch orientation with respect to the local direction of relative surface sliding is presumably a factor affecting instantaneous debris liberation during articulation. A three-dimensional local finite element model was developed, of orientation-specific polyethylene articulation with a scratched metal counterface, to explore continuum-level stress/strain parameters potentially correlating with the orientation dependence of scratch wear in a corresponding physical experiment. Computed maximum stress values exceeded the yield strength of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) for all scratch orientations but did not vary appreciably among scratch orientations. Two continuum-level parameters judged most consistent overall with the direction dependence of experimental wear were (1) cumulative compressive total normal strain in the direction of loading, and (2) maximum instantaneous compressive total normal strain transverse to the sliding direction. Such stress/strain metrics could be useful in global computational models of wear acceleration, as surrogates to incorporate anisotropy of local metal surface roughening.
