High-transparent Eu3+-doped yttrium lanthanum oxide ceramics were fabricated with nanopowders and the highest transmittance in the visible light wavelength region reaches 78%. The Eu3+-doped transparent ceramics exhibited a broad absorption band around 240 nm, a sharp red emission at 611 nm under X-ray excitation and the fluorescent decay time of 0.96 ms. It is expected to be a potential polycrystalline scintillation material for the applications in medical-imaging detectors.

Silicate-based Sr2-xMgSi2O7:xEu2+(x=0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07) phosphors were synthesized by the high temperature solid-state reaction method. Phase purity and crystal structure of the phosphors were characterized using X-ray diffraction spectrometer. The optical excitation and emission spectra of Eu2+ ion were measured using luminescence spectrometer and fluorescence spectrophotometer. The emission spectra showed a strong blue luminescence peaked around 470 nm, corresponds to the 4f65d1 →4f7 transition on Eu2+. Two different average decay time confirmed that the Eu2+ cations may occupy in two different lattice sites and presents different spectroscopic features. With a broad absorption band extending from 224 to 450 nm, it is suggestive that the phosphors have a potential application in UV-LED chips (360-400 nm).

Yb3+-doped single-crystal Ca3Y2(BO3)4 with dimension φ20 × 55 mm was grown by the Czochralski method. The structure of it was determined by x-ray diffraction. It belongs to the orthorhombic system, space group Pnma, with the following parameters: a= 7.1690(4), b = 15.4758(8), c = 8.5587(6) Å, V = 949.55(10)Å3, Mr = 537.51, Z = 2, Dc = 3.8 g/cm3, (MoKa) = 0.71073 Å, F(000) = 508, μ = 6.927 mm-1, final R = 0.0670, and wR = 0.1542 for 2975 independent reflections. The structure of Yb:Ca3Y2(BO3)4 is made up of three set of M-oxygen distorted polyhedrons, and three set of BO3 planar triangles. Ca2+ and Y3+ ions occupy three M sites statistically. Yb3+ ions substitute Y3+ ions to enter these three lattices. The adsorption and emission spectra were measured. It exhibits a broad absorption band ranging from 850 to 1000 nm in the absorption spectrum, which is well matched with the emission wavelength of a laser diode. A broad emission spectrum ranging from 927.95 to 1102.7 nm was observed under the excitation of 895 nm.

The Eu-doped TiO2nanocrystals with different content of Eu3+and the Eu-doped TiO2-ZnO composite powders with different content of ZnO were prepared by sol-gel method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra and photoluminescence(PL) spectra indicated that all of the Eu-doped TiO2have anatase structure. It indicated that the incorporation of Eu3+can inhibit the transformation of TiO2from anatase to rutile phase. With the increase of the content of Eu3+, the luminous intensity first increased and then decreased, and luminescent properties were best when the content of Eu3+is 1.1%. Considering the Eu-doped TiO2-ZnO composite powders, with the increasing of the proportion of ZnO, a Zn2TiO4phase has been gradually generated. When the content of ZnO up to 40%, the luminescent properties are the best.

The spectral changes of the enzyme-bound FAD were investigated in the anaerobic and aerobic reactions of lysine monooxygenase, a flavoprotein. Under anaerobic conditions, the enzyme FAD was fully reduced with lysine via a transient intermediate having a broad absorption band in the long wavelength region. This anaerobic species was presumably involved in the dehydrogenation of lysine leading to the formation of an α-keto acid. During the steady state of the aerobic reaction, a separate spectral species with a long wavelength absorption was observed. Both lysine and oxygen were required for its appearance. Kinetic evidence supports the intermediacy of this species in the oxygenation of lysine to an acid amide.

Transparent ceramics based on ytterbium oxide have been successfully produced by vacuum sintering of self-propagating high-temperature synthesized powders with use of a La2O3 sintering aid. Phase composition and microstructure of the initial powders were studied by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that addition of 5 mol.% of La2O3 does not cause formation of secondary phases in the Yb2O3 powders. The 4% La:Yb2O3 ceramics showed the best in-line transmittance of 73% at a wavelength of 2 μm among the studied samples. Dependence of the Verdet constant on wavelength was investigated in the range of 0.4–2 μm. The most promising finding is use of the obtained material as Faraday isolators in the wavelength region of ~1.5 μm, where there are no absorption bands, and the Verdet constant is 8.6 rad/(T*m).

To modify the photoluminescence properties the Eu(DBM)3 bath complexes were encapsulated into the sub-nanometer pores of aluminosilicates zeolites L and Yand characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron micrographs (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectra. The luminescent properties of the encapsulated composites (Eu-L and Eu-Y) were systematically studied. The results indicate that in both the two composites the crystal-field symmetry becomes lower, as a consequence, the 5D0-7F2 electronicdipole transition relative to the 5D0-7F1 magnetic-dipole transition of Eu3+ increases in contrast to the pure complexes. The outer quantum efficiency of the Eu3+ emission and the photostability of Eu3+ are both improved considerably. The adsorption of water in the composites has influence on the thermostability and decay dynamics of the Eu3+ emission. In the composite Eu-L, which contains less water the thermostability of luminescence is improved considerably and the lifetime becomes longer in comparison to the pure complexes. Overall, zeolite L is a more ideal host material for modification of lanthanide complexes.

MgLaLiSi2O7:Eu3+ phosphors have been prepared through the sol-gel process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric and ddifferential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), FT-IR spectra and photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize the resulting phosphors. FT-IR spectra suggested that crystallized silicates have formed in the powders annealed at 1050°C. The results of XRD indicated that the phosphors crystallized completely at 1050°C. In MgLaLiSi2O7:Eu3+ phosphors, the Eu3+ shows its characteristic red (613nm, 5D0–7F2) emissions.
