The polyethersulfone/sulfonated polysolfone (PES/SPSF) blend ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with excellent performance were prepared by immersion phase inversion technique. The effects of degree of sulfonation (DS) of SPSF, PES/SPSF ratio, temperature of coagulation bath on the membrane porosity, pure water flux and rejection of PEG were investigated. The results show that the membrane performance with low molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) is excellent when the SPSF with 30% DS is added and the blending ratio of PES/SPSF is 4/1. The temperature of coagulation bath affects the structure of the membrane.

PVDF flat UF membranes were optimized to get relative high protein rejection with high permeation fluxes. The effects of PVDF content and the additive species on the membrane performance were investigated. The synergy effect between LiCl and PEG8kcan increase the flux remarkably than the single additive. With the increase of PEG8kcontent, the synergy effect of LiCl decreased. In addition, when the PEG8kcontent was higher than LiCl, the pure water flux was relatively high, while with the increasing of LiCl content, the membrane tensile strength was increased. The addition of PEG8kand LiCl should constitute an appropriate method to prepare a series of membranes with controlled flux.

This study investigates the effects of different grafting time on the polysulfone grafted methyl methacrylate (PSf-g-MMA) membrane performance. PSf-g-MMA was successfully prepared via UV radiation method. Methyl methacrylate (MMA) and benzophenon (BP) were used as a monomer and initiator respectively. Membrane performances were measured based on permeation and rejection of bovine serum albumin (BSA). Degree of grafting was found to increase as grafting time increases and the optimum time was found at 100 minutes. The results revealed that the pure water flux and rejection were significantly improved with the addition of grafting time. The present of MMA also were found to improve fouling properties of the membrane.

In this study, Cu-BTC (copper(II) benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were incorporated into the structure of polysulfone (PSf) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes to improve the membrane performance for landfill leachate treatment, whereby different concentrations of Cu-BTC (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 wt%) were added to the PSf casting solution. The successful incorporation of Cu-BTC MOFs into the modified membranes was investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The Cu-BTC-modified PSf membranes showed higher performance in terms of flux and rejection, as compared to the neat PSf membrane. For example, the pure water flux (PWF) of neat membrane increased from 111 to 194 L/m2h (LMH) by loading 2 wt% Cu-BTC into the membrane structure, indicating 74% improvement in PWF. Furthermore, the flux of this membrane during filtration of landfill leachate increased up to 15 LMH, which indicated 50% improvement in permeability, as compared to the neat membrane. Finally, the modified membranes showed reasonable antifouling and anti-biofouling properties than the blank membrane.

Hydrophilic Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes were prepared by wet-spinning method. The effects of technical parameters of acrylic acid grafted onto PVDF on the performance of hydrophilic PVDF membranes were investigated via orthogonal test, the technical parameters of preparation of hydrophilic PVDF membranes were determined, and hydrophilic PVDF membranes were prepared. Then hydrophilic PVDF membranes were characterized in terms of breaking strength, breaking elongation, rupture pressure, pure water flux and rejection. The fouling properties and the conditions of acrylic acid grafted onto PVDF were also examined. The results showed that acrylic acid had been grafted onto PVDF, the breaking strength and rupture pressure improved greatly, and the fouling properties were better than PS hollow fiber UF membrane.

A modified thin film PSf-MCC reverse osmosis membrane was prepared by interfacial polymerization between aqueous MPD and TMC as the organic monomer. Aim of this study is to determine the effect of MCC in membrane formulation and fabrication. The surface and cross section morphology of TFC PSF/MCC membrane shows MCC particle which able to improve hydrophilicity of the membrane. The SEM images showed dense and porous structure of the MCC incorporated membranes. In addition, the water contact angle measurement also confirmed the increased hydrophilicity of the modified membranes. The effect of MCC on membrane matric influence the membrane performance in terms of NaCl rejection and pure water flux. Results showed that TFC PSf/MCC membrane shows NaCl rejection up to 98.9% compared with TFC PSf membrane. TFC PSf/MCC membrane also showed the highest pure water flux which is 3.712 Lm2/hr compare with TFC PSF membrane which is 3.606 Lm2/hr. The overall result proved that MCC particle could improve membrane hydrophilicity hence, increased pure water flux and salt rejection.

Polysulfone (PSF) hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes were successfully prepared by dry-wet spinning technology. Dimethylacetamide (DMAC) was used as a solvent, water was used as bore liquid and coagulation bath, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used as polymeric additive. The effects of spinning conditions on membrane structures and properties were investigated in present study. The results indicated that with the increase of PVP concentration, pure water flux increased and developed finger-like pores were formed. High coagulation bath temperature restricted pure water flux, 30°C was the best for the preparation of high-performance ultrafiltration membranes. When the air length was 11cm, the membrane comprehensive performance was the best.

Engineered nanoparticles are known to boost membrane performance in membrane technology. Hitherto, tunable properties that lead to improved hydrophilicity due to increased surface oxygen functionalities upon oxidation of petrol soot have not been fully exploited in membrane filtration technology. Herein, the integration of oxidized petrol soot nanoparticles (PSN) into polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes produced via phase inversion technique for dye removal in wastewater is reported. The nanoparticles, as well as the composite membranes, were characterized with diverse physicochemical methods, particularly TEM, SEM, BET, AFM, contact angle, etc. The effect of varying the ratio of PSN (0.05–1.0 wt %) on the properties of the composite membrane was evaluated. The composite membranes displayed increased hydrophilicity, enhanced pure water flux, and antifouling properties relative to the pristine membrane. For example, the obtained pure water flux increased from 130 L·m−2·h−1 for base membrane to 265 L·m−2·h−1 for the best composite membrane (M4). The best flux recovery ratio (FRR) observed for the membranes containing PSN was ca. 80% in contrast to 49% obtained with the pristine membrane indicative of the positive influence of PSN on membrane antifouling behavior. Furthermore, the PSN composite membranes displayed relatively selective anionic dye rejection of ˃95% for Congo red and between 50–71% for methyl orange compared with 42–96% rejection obtained for cationic methylene blue dye with increasing PSN content. The successful fabrication of polyethersulfone–PSN composite membranes by a simple blending process opens a novel route for the preparation of economical, functional, and scalable water purification membranes capable of addressing the complex issue of water remediation of organic azo dyes.

This research is about the investigation of the pure water flux property of composite polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers. Electrospinning technique was used to prepare the composite electrospun nanofibers. PVDF was dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent and blended together with activated carbon (AC) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The nanofibers were characterized to determine the morphologies, wettability property, and its tensile strength. The fabricated nanofibers diameter was found in the range between 20 to 180 nm. The presence of AC deteriorates the mechanical properties of the nanofibers as the size of AC is larger than the external diameter of the nanofibers. The results of contact angle confirmed that the fabricated nanofiber exhibit less hydrophobic in the presence of PVP and AC. The less hydrophobic nature of proposed nanofiber might be useful for the water treatment process.
