In this study, highly adsorptive mechanically-mixed and as-synthesized allophane–wakefieldite-(Ce) composites were prepared by mechanical mixing and hydrothermal synthesis, respectively. The results from X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy analyses show that the mechanically-mixed composite has higher crystallinity than the as-synthesized composite. The nanoparticles of wakefieldite-(Ce) were homogenously distributed with allophane in the as-synthesized composite. The specific surface areas of the mechanically-mixed and as-synthesized composites are 164 m2/g and 191 m2/g, respectively. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was evaluated for the degradation of acetaldehyde (AcH) gas under visible light. Both composites demonstrated higher photocatalytic activity than individual wakefieldite-(Ce) and allophane because allophane in the composites played an important role in the adsorption of acetaldehyde gas molecules and the mediation between the gas phase and the wakefieldite-(Ce) surface.

BiVO4/Bi2VO5.5 heterogeneous nanostructures with enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity were successfully prepared by a facile one-pot solvothermal method, where diethylene glycol (DEG) was used as the solvent. The as-prepared products were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The results revealed that the molar ratio of Bi3+ to VO43- played an important role in the formation of crystal and morphology. These BiVO4/Bi2VO5.5 heterogeneous nanostructures exhibited higher visible-light-driven photocatalytic efficiency compared to the pure BiVO4 and Bi2VO5.5. For the methyl orange (MO) degradation efficiency of BiVO4/Bi2VO5.5 heterogeneous nanostructures under visible light irradiation, about 95% of MO was degraded within 40min, which is much higher than pure BiVO4 and Bi2VO5.5. The enhancement of photocatalytic activity can attribute to the promoted light absorption capability and the separation efficiency of photo-generated electron-hole pairs.

ZnFe2O4/rGO/g-C3N4 ternary nanocomposite photocatalysts with different ZnFe2O4/g-C3N4 weight ratio (0.5, 0.75, 1) were prepared by a stepwise solvothermal method using ethylene glycol as the solvent. Physicochemical methods such as X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy were applied in order to characterize the composites. The formation of a meso-/macroporous structure with specific surface area between 67 and 77 m2 g–1 was confirmed by N2 adsorption/desorption. The bandgap of the composites was found to be lower (2.30 eV) than that of g-C3N4 (2.7 eV). In contrast to pure g-C3N4, the composites showed no fluorescence, i.e. no recombination of e–/h+ took place. All samples, including pure g-C3N4 and ZnFe2O4, were tested for adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of aqueous malachite green model solutions (10–5 M) under visible light irradiation (λ > 400 nm). The results show that the prepared nanocomposites have higher absorption and photocatalytic activity than the pristine g-C3N4 and ZnFe2O4 and can be successfully used for water purification from organic azo-dyes.

A visible-light-responsive TiO2-xNx photocatalyst was prepared by a very simple method. Ammonia solution was used as nitrogen resource in this paper. The TiO2-xNx photocatalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), UV-Vis diffuse reflection spectra (DRS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The ethylene was selected as a target pollutant under visible light excitation to evaluate the activity of this photocatalyst. The new prepared TiO2-xNx photocatalyst with strong photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation was demonstrated in the experiment.

Few-layered MoS2 nanostructures were successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method without the addition of any catalysts or surfactants. Their morphology, structure and photocatalytic activity were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectra and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, respectively. These results show that the MoS2 nanostructures synthesized at 180[Formula: see text]C exhibit an optimal visible light photocatalytic activity (99%) in the degradation of Rhodamine B owing to the relatively easier adsorption of pollutants, higher visible light absorption and lower electron–hole pair recombination.

A series of BiFeO3 and BiFe[Formula: see text]Mn[Formula: see text]O3 (x = 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.10) were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and their photocatalytic activity was studied by photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. The band gap of BiFeO3 was significantly decreased from 2.26 eV to 1.90 eV with the doping of Mn. Furthermore, the 6% Mn-doped BiFeO3 photocatalyst exhibited the best activity with a degradation rate of 94% after irradiation for 100 min. The enhanced photocatalytic activity with Mn doping could be attributed to the enhanced optical absorption, increment of surface reactive sites and reduction of electron–hole recombination. Our results may be conducive to design more efficient photocatalysts responsive to visible light among narrow band gap semiconductors.

In this paper, W-doped TiO2 (W-TiO2) powder was prepared in hydrothermal method by mixing TiO2 and ammonium metatungstate. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction and ultraviolet spectrophotometer. The results displayed that W-TiO2 showed an anatase crystallite structure with 2 % W content. W-element in W-TiO2 was amorphous state. The guaiacol was degraded with the W-TiO2 in the visible light. It was a model compounds of lignin existed in the plant fibers. The degradation rate of guaiacol was increased with the photocatalytic time, as high as 88.21 % after 360 min irradiation. It was concluded that the W-TiO2 had an obvious photocatalytic activity under visible light. It can be used in the photocatalytic degradation of lignin.

Boron-BiVO4 samples were synthesized by sol-gel method. They were characterized by UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction. Photocatalytic activity of the obtained BiVO4 samples was investigated through degrading methylene blue (MB). The results reveal that boron-BiVO4 catalysts have monoclinic scheelite structure. The BiVO4 and Co-BiVO4 photocatalysts were responsive to visible light. Co-BiVO4 photocatalyst showed higher photocatalytic activity than pure BiVO4, resulting in the significantly improved efficiency of degradation of MB.

The p-n junction photocatalysts, p-CuO (at. 0-25%)/n-ZnO nanocomposite were prepared through hydrothermal method without using any organic solvent or surfactant. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that the CuO/ZnO nanocomposite presented a two-dimensional morphology composed of sheet-like ZnO nanostructures adorned with CuO nanoparticles. The photocatalytic activity of CuO/ZnO with different Cu/Zn molar rations and pure ZnO synthesized by the identical synthetic route were evaluated by degrading methylene blue (MB) dye under UV-visible light irradiation. The CuO/ZnO with Cu/Zn molar ratio of 4% exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity compared that of the other photocatalysts under the identical conditions. It is mainly attributed to the increased charge separation rate in the nanocomposite and the extended photo-responding range.

Cu-modified immobilized nanoporous TiO2 photocatalysts, prepared by electrochemical anodization of titanium foils, were obtained via four different synthesis methods: hydrothermal synthesis, anodization with Cu source, electrodeposition, and spin-coating, using two different copper sources, Cu(NO3)2 and Cu(acac)2. The objective of this research was to investigate how copper modifications can improve the photocatalytic activity of immobilized nanoporous TiO2 under the UV/solar light irradiation. The best photocatalytic performances were obtained for Cu-modifications using spin-coating. Therefore, the effect of irradiated catalyst surface areas on the adsorption of model pollutants, methylene blue (MB) and 1H-benzotriazole (BT), was examined for samples with Cu-modification by the spin-coating technique. The mechanisms responsible for increased degradation of MB and BT at high Cu concentrations (0.25 M and 0.5 M) and decreased degradation at low Cu loadings (0.0625 M and 0.125 M) were explained. 1H-benzotriazole was used to study the photocatalytic activity of the given samples because it is highly toxic and present in most water systems. The characterization of the synthesized Cu-modified photocatalysts in terms of phase composition, crystal structure, and morphology were investigated using X-ray Diffraction, Raman Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.

A silicon dioxide/carbon nano onions/titanium dioxide (SiO2/CNOs/TiO2) composite was synthesized by a simple sol-gel method and characterized by the methods of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-Vis DRS). In this work, the photocatalytic activity of the SiO2/CNOs/TiO2 photocatalyst was assessed by testing the degradation rate of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light. The results indicated that the samples exhibited the best photocatalytic activity when the composite consisted of 3% CNOs and the optimum dosage of SiO2/CNOs/TiO2(3%) was 1.5 g/L as evidenced by the highest RhB degradation rate (96%). The SiO2/CNOs/TiO2 composite greatly improved the quantum efficiency of TiO2. This work provides a new option for the modification of subsequent nanocomposite oxide nanoparticles.
