Friction and wear properties of aluminum matrix composites are studied, including brake speed, brake pressure, and surface temperature etc. A conclusion can be drawn that SiC particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites are of stable friction coefficient, high thermal conductivity, and excellent wear-resistance. Hubs of motorcycle with brake rings of Al/SiC composites were manufactured and exhibited an excellent braking performance.

With the rapid development of aviation at home, particle reinforced metal matrix composites (PRMMCs) has been widely applied recently. But at the same time, the difficult machining has gradually been one of the most outstanding bottle-necks that restrict the rapid enhancement of productivity. Here, in virtue of the self-developed ultrasonic drilling equipment, hole-making experiments of common and ultrasonic vibration drilling are performed on SiC particle reinforced aluminum-matrix composites (SiCp/Al)with different content of SiC by using two types of tungsten carbide drill. Drilling characteristics of machining composites with ultrasonic vibration are analyzed from such respects as the composites crush, drilling force, drill wear and hole surface quality. Studies show that, during the ultrasonic vibration drilling process, SiC particle in the composites is prone to break along the crystal connection boundary or suffer ductile fracture under the dynamic ultrasonic impulse, in which the cutting resistance could be reduced and the tool edge could be protected. Thereby, drilling locating precision and hole surface quality could be enhanced, wear of the drill chisel edge effectively improved, and the drilling torque reduced about 30%.

The friction and wear properties of an Al6061 alloy reinforced with carbon fibers (CF) modified with Cu-Ni bimetallic layers were researched. Cu-Ni double layers were applied to the CF by electroless plating and Al6061-matrix composites were prepared by powder metallurgy technology. The metal-CF/Al interfaces and post-dry-wear-testing wear loss weights, friction coefficients, worn surfaces, and wear debris were characterized. After T6 heat treatment, the interfacial bonding mechanism of Cu-Ni-CF changed from mechanical bonding to diffusion bonding and showed improved interfacial bonding strength because the Cu transition layer reduced the fiber damage caused by Ni diffusion. The metal–CF interfacial bonding strongly influenced the composite’s tribological properties. Compared to the Ni-CF/Al and Cu-CF/Al composites, the Cu-Ni-CF/Al composite showed the highest hardness, the lowest friction coefficient and wear rate, and the best load-carrying capacity. The wear mechanisms of Cu-Ni-CF/Al composite are mainly slight abrasive wear and adhesive wear.

In this study, attempt has been made to investigate the effect of SiC particles on the friction and wear properties of Ni/SiC composites manufactured by electrodeposition, especially for the composites with high-temperature treatment. For this purpose, α-Al2O3 was coated on the surfaces of SiC particles by sol-gel technology to inhibit interfacial reaction of SiC and nickel at high temperature. Both of the Ni/α-Al2O3-coated SiC (Ni/CSp) and Ni/uncoated SiC (Ni/UCSp) composites were treated at 600 °C to study the resulting wear behaviour. The results indicated that with heat treatment at 600 °C, the Ni/CSp composite had better tribological properties than the Ni/UCSp composite. It was proved that the uncoated SiC particles have reacted completely with nickel leaving many defects, while the coated SiC particles still remained in the Ni/CSp composite hardening the nickel matrix and supporting the counterpart, thus improving the wear resistance of Ni/CSp composite with relatively low friction coefficient and wear mass loss compared to the Ni/UCSp composite.
