Free-form surface interpolation functions give more advantages in machining than the traditional line and circle functions. A method is developed to convert lines and circles into Pythagorean-hodograph (PH) curves. In order to get smooth machining process the PH curve is used to replace the joints of the circular/linear elements by the connection situation. The slope of line is used to get the tangent vector in the line conversion. When converting a circle to a PH curve, points of the divided circle are introduced to compute the vectors. The methods of computing tangent vectors are proposed according to the slope of the line and the quadrant of the circle. The transformation errors from lines and circles to PH curves are computed. In the corner smoothing process the tangent vectors are computed by the connection between lines and circles. Replacement errors at the joints are computed for the use of PH curve. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the conversion from line and circle to PH curve. The PH curves at the joints of the circular and linear elements show continuous trajectory.

We describe and analyze a new algorithm for rounding standard G-code tool paths. The joints of circular/linear elements are replaced by small segments of Pythagorean hodograph (PH) curves so that the final curve is globally C2 continuous. The PH segments are produced via a second order Hermite interpolation. We discuss some implementation details and investigate the error introduced by replacing a part of G-code by a PH curve segment. We also report results of tests within an industrial environment that demonstrate an increase in path velocity while decreasing peak acceleration.

This paper describes a novel idea of path planning for multiple UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). The path planning ensures safe and simultaneous arrival of the UAVs to the target while meeting curvature and safety constraints. Pythagorean Hodograph (PH) curve is used for path planning. The PH curve provides continuous curvature of the paths. The offset curves of the PH paths define safety margins around and along each flight path. The simultaneous arrival is satisfied by generation of paths of equal lengths. This paper highlights the mathematical property — changing path-shape and path-length by manipulating the curvature and utilises this to achieve the following constraints: (i) Generation of paths of equal length, (ii) Achieving maximum bound on curvature, and, (iii) Meeting the safety constraints by offset paths.

Deformation-free clamping plays an important role in manufacturing systems helping to ensure zero-defect production. The fixture of workpieces during machining processes poses challenges not only for microparts but also for thin-walled pieces or free-form surfaces in macromanufacturing. To address this challenge, a nontraditional adhesive technique, using frozen water to clamp, is introduced in this paper. By increasing the cooling power and thus reducing the temperature of the clamping plate, higher adhesive ice strength and, therefore, a safer clamping system during machining process, can be achieved. The objective of this investigation is to ensure a stable low temperature and to compensate for thermal disturbances. Thanks to their structural robustness, Lyapunov-based control strategies demonstrate an appropriate capability to achieve these results in real industrial applications. Model design of the clamping system as well as simulation and experimental results are shown and discussed.

In the setting of Banach manifolds the notion of tangent vector to an arbitrary closed subset has been introduced in [11] by the author and N. H. Pavel, and it has been used in flow-invariance and optimization ([11], [12], [13]). For detailed informations on tangent vectors to closed sets (including historical comments) we refer to the recent book of N. H. Pavel [17].The aim of this paper is to apply this general concept of tangency in the study of geodesies. We are concerned with geodesies which have either the endpoints in given closed subsets or the same angle for a fixed closed subset. This approach allows one to extend important results due to K. Grove [4] and T. Kurogi ([6], [7]).

In this paper, a new multi-resolution representation (MRR) of a series of intermediate shape models for FTS diamond turning based on mesh simplification is proposed. In this MRR, geometric relations between each resolution model can be controlled so as to avoid overcut and to level the cutting loads. The new control method for MRR is based on an improved Edge Collapse Algorithm with consideration of the curvature factor. In addition, the calculation method of machining allowance and tool path generation method are proposed to support the machining process. The effectiveness of the MRR has been verified through simulation.

Curving tool paths composed of straight lines, which are often represented as G01 blocks, are still the most widespread format form in the machining process chain of CAD/CAM/CNC. At the junctions between consecutive segments, the tangency and curvature discontinuities may lead to feedrate fluctuation and acceleration oscillation, which would deteriorate the machining efficiency and quality. In this paper, a real-time look-ahead interpolation methodology is proposed, which adopts a curvature-continuous PH curve as a transition to blend corner at the junction of adjacent lines in the tool path. The blending algorithm can guarantee the approximation error exactly, and the control points of the curve can be calculated analytically. On the other hand, the arc length and the curvature of the transition curve, which are important items in speed planning, also have analytical expressions. All the advantages are the guarantee of calculation efficiency during the interpolation. Except for a curvature-continuous tool path, our look-ahead algorithm adopts a speed planning window strategy to achieve a balance between the calculation capabilities and the real-time interpolation requirements. In this window, the corner transition algorithm and speed planning are implemented simultaneously and dynamically during the interpolation. By defining the width of this window, which is actually the number of linear segments contained in this window, can adjust the time consuming of speed planning. Simulation and experiments on our own developed CNC platform are conducted. The results demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed algorithms.

In this paper, a novel architecture of Pythagorean Hodograph (PH) curve interpolator based on Nios Ⅱ embedded processor and FPGA is proposed. The whole interpolator including NiosⅡ processor is built in a single FPGA chip. The interpolator uses a two-stage interpolation scheme to reduce the computational burden of PH curve interpolator. The Nios Ⅱ embedded processor implements 1st-stage interpolation, the FPGA receives the command from the Nios Ⅱ processor and implements 2nd-stage interpolation simultaneously. Therefore, the interpolator can implement the real-time PH curve interpolation algorithm steadily to meet the needs of high-speed and high-precision machining.

When the CNC machining of continuous small line segments is performed, the direction of the machine tool movement will change abruptly at the corner of adjacent line segments. Therefore, a reasonable constraint on the feedrate at the corner is the prerequisite for achieving high-speed and high-precision machining. To achieve this goal, a feedrate-constraint method based on the nominal acceleration was proposed. The proposed method obtains the predicted value of acceleration during the machining process by the machining trajectory prediction and acceleration filtering. Then, the feedrate at the corner is constrained, according to the predicted acceleration. Specifically, for any corner of adjacent line segments, the proposed method assumes that the CNC machining of a short path centered on the corner is carried out at a constant feedrate. First, the actual machining trajectory is predicted according to the transfer function of the servo system. Then, the nominal acceleration, when the CNC machining is carried out to the corner, is calculated and processed by a low-pass FIR filter. Last, the feedrate-constraint value at the corner is obtained according to the nominal acceleration and the preset normal acceleration. The advantage of the proposed method is that it can be used for different machining paths consisting of long segments or continuous small segments and it has no special requirement for the accuracy of the machining path. As a result, the feedrate-constraint value obtained is reasonable and the smooth machining process can be ensured. The simulation results in both 2D and 3D machining paths show that the proposed method is insensitive to the length of the line segment and the angle of the corner, and the calculated feedrate-constraint value is close to the theoretical value, which has good stability and versatility. In contrast, the feedrate-constraint values obtained by conventional methods change abruptly along the machining path, especially in the 3D simulation, which will damage the machining quality. The experiment was performed on a three-axis CNC machine tool controlled by a self-developed controller, and a free-form surface workpiece was machined by a conventional feedrate-constraint method and the proposed method, respectively. The experimental results showed that the proposed method can make the feedrate of the machining process higher and more stable. Then, machining defects such as overcutting and undercutting can be avoided and the machining quality can be improved. Therefore, the article proposes a new method to constrain the feedrate at the corner of continuous small line segments, which can improve the machining efficiency and quality of the CNC machining.

Abstract Planning tool-paths on free-form surfaces is a widely discussed issue. However, traditional methods of generating paths capable of meeting all the requirements of blade machining remain challenging. In this study, a new iso-parametric path-planning strategy based on a novel parameterization method combined with the conformal transformation theory was proposed. The proposed method could adapt to the curvature characteristics of the blade surface, improving the kinematic performance of the machining process, reducing multi-axis coordinated motion control complexity, and improving machining quality. The proposed method was then compared with three traditional methods. The influence of the tool-path on the kinematic performance of the machine tool was quantitatively examined based on the kinematics models of two different machine tools. A large cutting depth milling experiment was conducted to verify that kinematics optimization could improve machining quality. The proposed method provides a more reasonable path-planning approach for blade machining on a five-axis machine tool, which is of great significance in reducing the cost of blade machining and the risks of blade failure. Moreover, it is of great significance for the large-scale automated production of blades.
