The effects of calcium hexaluminate addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of zirconia-toughened-alumina ceramic were investigated. Zirconia-toughened-alumina (ZTA) composite ceramics which have different additions of calcium hexaluminate were successfully fabricated by pressureless sintering at 1600°C for 3h. The result shows that the bending strength and abrasive wearing improved with the increasing of CaAl12O19addition while the fracture toughness declined.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) composite ceramics prepared by gelcasting process were investigated. The results indicated that Al2O3-ZrO2 composites have high bending strength and fracture toughness for the solid loading of the suspension ³ 50vol.%. The bending strength and fracture toughness of sintered ZTA ceramics reach values as high as 631.5 MPa and 7.64 MPa·m1/2, respectively, with solid loading of suspension being 55vol.%. The t-ZrO2 content is increased, and the uniformity of ZrO2 particle distribution is improved in sintered samples prepared by gelcasting compared with those by dry pressing.

Nb2O5-7.5La2O3-Al2O3 composite ceramics were prepared by microwave sintering. The influence of Nb2O5 and La2O3 proportion on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al2O3 ceramics was investigated. The results show that when the Nb2O5 content was lower than La2O3, the columnar LaAl11O18 grains were generated by the reaction of La2O3 with Al2O3. When the Nb2O5 content was higher than La2O3, the surplus Nb2O5 induced the formation of columnar Al2O3 grains. The growth of columnar Al2O3 grains were promoted synergistically by LaNbO4 formed in-situ and Nb2O5. The 5Nb2O5-7.5La2O3-Al2O3 composite ceramic exhibited excellent comprehensive properties: ρr=99.3% (relative density), HV=11.2GPa (microhardness), KIC= 6.4MPa·m1/2 (fracture toughness), σ=304.3MPa (bending strength).

Different grain size of starting powder was choosed and different sintering additives were used to fabricate Si3N4 ceramics by pressureless sintering. Samples’ relative density and mechanical properties including Vickers hardness, bending strength and fracture toughness were tested. Then XRD, SEM and EDS were carried out to identify phase and observe microstructure and fracture morphology. The result shows that high purity α phase Si3N4 powder of 5 μm is suitable for sintering and combination of 5 wt.% MgO +5 wt.% Y2O3 is most effective within six kinds of sintering aids.

Si3N4/BN composite ceramics with 25vol% h-BN were prepared by pressure-less sintering process with Nd2O3/Al2O3/Y2O3 as sintering additives. The effects of these ternary additives on the densification behaviors and mechanical properties were investigated. XRD and FESEM were used to investigate the α-β phase transformation and microstructure. The XRD results showed that α-Si3N4 has transformed to β-Si3N4 completely in all the samples during the pressureless sintering process. The line shrinkage increased with the Nd2O3 contents increasing, and the highest line shrinkage (7.75%) was observed when 4wt% Nd2O3 was added, then decreased. The same trends were observed in flexural strength and fracture toughness testing. The ternary additives of Y2O3-Al2O3-Nd2O3 could improve the density, strength and fracture toughness of the material effectively.

A fibrous monolith cemented carbide with WC-6Co as cell and WC-20Co as cell boundaries was produced through hot co-extrusion process in this paper. The density, hardness, bending strength and fracture toughness of the fibrous monolith cemented carbide were tested, and the fracture and crack propagation were observed by metalloscope and SEM. The results showed that the bending strength and fracture toughness of the fibrous monolith cemented carbides was remarkably improved 71.91% and 45.7% respectively, while the hardness was slightly decreased 1% compared with WC-6Co composites. It is the reason that the tougher shell WC-20Co with higher bending strength and fracture toughness can absorb more fracture energy, which can slow down and prevent the crack propagating from brittle core WC-6Co.

β-SiAlON powder was used as a raw powder to fabricate α/β-SiAlON composite ceramics with different rare earth elements. The phases present in the sample fabricated from -SiAlON, α-Si3N4, AlN, and rare earth oxide powders were - and -SiAlONs. The composition was dependent on the chemical composition and firing profile. The sample obtained by adding Yb2O3 had a high -SiAlON content. The /-SiAlON composite ceramics had high densit. Their microstructures depended on the used metal oxides, namely, the addition of Nd2O3 and CaCO3 resulted in the elongation of the -SiAlON grains. The bending strength, fracture toughness, and hardness were influenced by the -SiAlON content, amount of elongated grains, and density of the sample.

The results of microstructure and mechanical properties investigation for alumina and zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) with 20 wt. % 3Y-ZrO2is presented. It was stated that the technique of preliminary treatment for zirconia suspension makes significant influence on sintered specimen microstructure. Introduction of the alloying additive treated with ball milling reduces Al2O3grain size in ceramic from 2-5 μm to 0.2-1 μm. The reduction of grain size increases the bending strength of ceramic material from 270 MPa up to 350 MPa. However fracture toughness of alumina and ZTA is 3.4 and 2.5 MPa·m1/2, respectively. It was shown that the low level of mechanical properties is related to the occurrence of major defects in the form of granule boundaries preserved at the forming stage.

Mixtures of 12 mol% CeO2-stabilised ZrO2 with 5 to 20 wt % Al2O3 were prepared and densified through pressureless sintering in air at 1450° C for 1 to 4 h. The influence of the Al2O3 content and sintering time on the phase constitution, microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-sintered composites were investigated. Fully dense Ce-TZP/Al2O3 ceramics with a good combination of hardness and fracture toughness can be obtained by pressureless sintering in air for only 1 h. The addition of Al2O3 to Ce-TZP improves the mechanical properties and suppresses ZrO2 grain growth. The average ZrO2 grain size increases with increasing sintering time and decreasing Al2O3 content. This leads to an increase in toughness. An excellent fracture toughness of 14.3 MPam1/2 in combination with a Vickers hardness of 9.14 GPa was obtained for 12 mol % CeO2-TZP with 5 wt % Al2O3, sintered for 4 h.

This paper proposes a simple reactive melt infiltration process to improve the mechanical properties of silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics. SiC matrix composites were infiltrated by Al–Si (10 wt.%)–xTi melts at 900 °C for 4 h. The effects of Ti addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. The results showed that the three-point bending strength, fracture toughness (by single-edge notched beam test), and fracture toughness (by Vickers indentation method) of the SiC ceramics increased most by 34.3%, 48.5%, and 128.5%, respectively, following an infiltration with the Al–Si (10 wt.%)–Ti (15 wt.%) melt. A distinct white reaction layer mainly containing a Ti3Si(Al)C2 phase was formed on the surface of the composites infiltrated by Al alloys containing Ti. Ti–Al intermetallic compounds were scattered in the inner regions of the composites. With the increase in the Ti content (from 0 to 15 wt.%) in the Al alloy, the relative contents of Ti3Si(Al)C2 and Ti–Al intermetallic compounds increased. Compared with the fabricated composite infiltrated by an Al alloy without Ti, the fabricated composites infiltrated by Al alloys containing Ti showed improved overall mechanical properties owing to formation of higher relative content Ti3Si(Al)C2 phase and small amounts of Ti–Al intermetallic compounds.
