In order to investigate the effects of TiN content on Al2O3/TiN ceramic material (ATN), the ATN ceramic materials were prepared of TiN content in 30%, 40%, 50%, 60% in the condition of hot press sintering. The sintering temperature is 1700°C, the sintering press is 32MPa, and the holding time are 5min, 10min, 15min. The effects of TiN content on mechanical properties and microstructure of ATN ceramic materials were investigated by analyzing the bending strength, hardness, fracture toughness. The results show that ATN50 has the best mechanical property, its bending strength is 659.41MPa, vickers hardness is 13.79GPa, fracture toughness is 7.06MPa·m1/2. It is indicated that the TiN content has important effect on microstructure and mechanical properties of ATN ceramic materials.

An Fe/FeAl2O4 composite was prepared with Fe-Fe2O3-Al2O3 powder by a hot press sintering method. The mass ratio was 6:1:2, sintering pressure was 30 MPa, and holding time was 120 min. The raw materials for the powder particles were respectively 1 µm (Fe), 0.5 µm (Fe2O3), and 1 µm (Al2O3) in diameter. The effect of sintering temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Fe/FeAl2O4 composite was studied. The results showed that Fe/FeAl2O4 composite was formed by in situ reaction at 1300 °C–1500 °C. With the increased sintering temperature, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Fe/FeAl2O4 composite showed a change law that initially became better and then became worse. The best microstructure and optimal mechanical properties were obtained at 1400 °C. At this temperature, the grain size of Fe and FeAl2O4 phases in Fe/FeAl2O4 composite was uniform, the relative density was 96.7%, and the Vickers hardness and bending strength were 1.88 GPa and 280.0 MPa, respectively. The wettability between Fe and FeAl2O4 was enhanced with increased sintering temperature. And then the densification process was accelerated. Finally, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Fe/FeAl2O4 composite were improved.

The ZrC-W composites with iron as sintering additive were fabricated by hot-press sintering. The densification, microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. The incorporation of Fe beneficially promotes the densification of ZrC-W composites. The relative density of the composite sintered at 1900°C can attain 95.3%. W2C phase is also found in the ZrC-W composite sintered at 1700°C. The content of W2C decreases with the increase of sintering temperature. However, W2C phase is not identified in the composite sintered at 1900°C. The flexural strength and fracture toughness of the composites are strongly dependent on sintering temperature. The flexural strength and fracture toughness of ZrC-W composite sintered at optimized temperature of 1800°C are 438 MPa and 3.99 MPa·m1/2, respectively.

The Fe/FeAl2O4 cermet was prepared with Fe-Fe2O3-Al2O3 powder by a hot press sintering method at 1400 °C. The raw materials for the powder particles were respectively 2 µm (Fe), 0.5 µm (Fe2O3), and 0.5 µm (Al2O3) in diameter, the sintering pressure was 30 MPa, and the holding time was 120 min. The effects of different Fe mass ratios on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Fe/FeAl2O4 cermet were studied. The results showed that a new ceramic phase FeAl2O4 could be formed by an in situ reaction during the hot press sintering. When the Fe mass ratio was increased, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Fe/FeAl2O4 cermet showed a change law that initially became better and then became worse. The best microstructure and mechanical properties were obtained in the S2 sample, where the mass ratio of Fe-Fe2O3-Al2O3 was 6:1:2. In this Fe mass ratio, the relative density was about 94%, and the Vickers hardness and bending strength were 1.21 GPa and 210.0 MPa, respectively. The reaction mechanism of Fe in the preparation process was the in situ synthesis reaction of FeAl2O4 and the diffusion reaction of Fe to FeAl2O4 grains. The increase of the Fe mass ratio improved the wettability of Fe and FeAl2O4, which increased the diffusion rate of Fe to FeAl2O4 grains, which increased the influence on the structure of FeAl2O4.

CNTs-TiAl/B4C composite has been obtained by high energy ball milling and hot press sintering. These technical process promoted the solid reaction and resulted in the formation of composites comprising Ti-Al, TiC, TiB2 and B4C. The SEM images and measurement of the mechanical properties proved that the addition of 1.5wt.% CNTs further improves the fracture toughness and the bending strength of TiAl/B4C composites.

Al2O3-MgO, Al2O3-Y2O3 and Al2O3-MgO-Y2O3 composite ceramics were fabricated respectively by hot-press sintering technique. With the analysis of the mechanical properties and microstructure, it was found that single additive MgO could be more favorable to the grains’ refinement and densification than Y2O3; the composite additive including both MgO and Y2O3 was better than single additive MgO or Y2O3, because their interactions could improve the mechanical properties of the Al2O3 ceramics; The sintering temperature could be reduced by adding the suitable amount of composite additives.

The CNT/B4C composite with Al2O3 additive was fabricated by hot-pressing following extrusion molding of a CNT/B4C paste, and mechanical properties of the obtained composite were investigated. Many CNTs in the composite aligned along the extrusion direction from SEM observation. 3-points bending strength of the composite was slightly lower than that of the monolithic B4C. Elastic modulus and Vickers hardness of the composite drastically decreased with CNT addition. Fracture toughness of the composite was higher than that of the monolithic B4C.

Al2O3/NiAl composites were successfully fabricated by hot-press-assisted exothermic dispersion method with elemental powder mixtures of Ni, Al, NiO. The content of Al2O3 on the microstructures and mechanical properties of Al2O3/NiAl composites has been characterized. The results show that the Vickers hardness, flexural strength and fracture toughness of the composites increase with increasing Al2O3 content. When the Al2O3 content is 15 wt %, the flexural strength and the fracture toughness peaked at 765 MPa and 9.67 MPa•m 1/2, respectively. The improvement of mechanical properties is associated with a more homogeneous and finer microstructure developed by addition of Al2O3.

A fibrous monolith cemented carbide with WC-6Co as cell and WC-20Co as cell boundaries was produced through hot co-extrusion process in this paper. The density, hardness, bending strength and fracture toughness of the fibrous monolith cemented carbide were tested, and the fracture and crack propagation were observed by metalloscope and SEM. The results showed that the bending strength and fracture toughness of the fibrous monolith cemented carbides was remarkably improved 71.91% and 45.7% respectively, while the hardness was slightly decreased 1% compared with WC-6Co composites. It is the reason that the tougher shell WC-20Co with higher bending strength and fracture toughness can absorb more fracture energy, which can slow down and prevent the crack propagating from brittle core WC-6Co.

Synthesis of dense materials with the compositions of Al2O3/Mo2N=100/0 ~ 40/60 vol% has been attempted directly from Al2O3/Mo mixed raw powder compacts using capsule-free N2 hot isostatic pressing (HIP). During HIPing [1500°C/(16~20)MPa]/1h], solid/gas reaction between Mo and N2 was introduced to form Mo2N. Most sintered composites consisting of only Al2O3 and Mo2N phases reached a higher relative density than 98.0% with closed pores nevertheless capsule-free HIPing. Distribution of Mo2N particles just formed suppressed the grain growth of Al2O3 during sintering. Mechanical properties, such as bending strength (Σb), Vickers hardness (HV), fracture toughness (K1C), and other properties have been evaluated as a function of their compositions. The best mechanical values of Σb (c.a. 573 MPa), HV (c.a. 20.3 GPa) and K1C (c.a. 5.00 MPa・m1/2) were attained at the composition of Al2O3/Mo2N=90/10 vol%, due to a high density (98.6%) and small grain size of Al2O3 matrix (Gs c.a. 4.70 μm). Further addition of Mo2N reduced the sinterability of matrix grains, resulting in low densities of around 90% at the 40/60 vol% composition.
