The modified mullite fiber was used to toughen the mullite ceramic, which can effectively overcome the brittleness of ceramic materials and improve the material strength and toughness. Using 8ZrOCl2•H2O as precursor, anhydrous ethanol as solvent, H2O2 as hydrolysis promoter and NH3·H2O as precipitant, the stable and transparent zirconium sol could be obtained by sol-gel process, which coated mullite short fiber. The results showed that the stable and transparent ZrO2 sol was obtained when pH value was 3.8~4.8 and reaction temperature was at 25°C. XRD results indicated that monoclinic ZrO2 particles grew up and formed after heat-treatment at 700°C. The coating ZrO2 film combined with mullite fiber homogeneously and closely, and the film thickness was about 1 μm.

Li-Ti-O (abbreviated as LTO) nano-composites were synthesized via sol-gel process, and then doped BaTiO3 based X7R type ceramics. The LTO nano-composites and their ceramics were characterized by means of thermaogravimetric, Fourier-transform infrared, X-ray diffraction methods, transmission electron microscopy. We also characterized the dielectric properties of the LTO doped BaTiO3 based ceramics of X7R type. The results indicated that LTO nano-composites were nanometer scale powders. The pH value and calcining temperature had an influence on particle size of LTO sintering aids. At pH about 3 and with calcining at 600 °C, the nano-composites attained minimum particle size (about 10 nm). By adding 0.10 wt% of the LTO nano-composites, the temperature permittivity achieved about 4200 when sintered at 1240 °C for 4 h, and the dielectric properties met X7R standard.

AbstractEpitaxial formation of KNbO3 films on several substrates was examined. The films were prepared by a sol-gel process using potassium ethoxide and niobium pentaethoxide. Hetero-epitaxial KNbO3 films with (100) orientation were successfully obtained both on MgO (100) and SrTiO3 (100) substrates by heat treatments above 700°C, while polycrystalline KNbO3 were formed on Si (111) substrates. Higher temperatures and extended soaking time promoted the grain growth of KNbO3 and KNbO3 films with improved surface morphologies (smoother surfaces) could be obtained by controlling heat treatment parameters.

Synthesis of GeS2 via a sol-gel process using germanium ethoxide and hydrogen sulfide in toluene resulted in a gel aggregate with an apparent Ge/S ratio 1:1.8. Special precautions were necessary to protect the reaction mixture from water contamination which produced GeO2. Results indicated that the main source of water was the hydrogen sulfide gas. Heat treatment of the produced GeSx gel yielded a product with Ge/S ratio 1:2.3. The sol-gel prepared materials and their heat-treated products were characterized by various methods.

Macroporous Ca12Al14O33(C12A7) mayenite monoliths have been successfully prepared via a sol-gel process in the presence of propylene oxide (PO) and poly (ethyleneoxide) (PEO). Gelation of CaO-Al2O3binary system with nitrates salts as additional precursors is accelerated by PO as an acid scavenger, while PEO works as a phase separation inducer to mediate the phase separation of the system. Appropriate PO and PEO amounts allow the formation of monolithic xerogel with interconnected macropores and co-continuous skeletons. The resultant dried gels are amorphous and the single crystalline phase Ca12Al14O33mayenite forms after heat-treatment at 1100 °C in air, while the macrostructure is preserved with a porosity as high as 78% and smoother and denser skeletons.

AbstractThis work is about the production of hybrid coatings of the system SiO2-PMMA (PMMA, polymethylmethacrylate). These materials have interesting mechanical and chemical properties useful for anticorrosive and wear resistance applications. SiO2-PMMA hybrids were obtained by the sol-gel traditional process, using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and methylmethacrylate (MMA) by Aldrich Co, as starting reagents. The SiO2:PMMA ratio was varied from 0:1 to about 1:1 at air atmosphere deposition. The coatings were obtained on acrylic sheets and silicon wafers. A diversity of coatings with chemical composition ranging from SiO2 and PMMA to obtain the SiO2-PMMA hybrids were obtained. Infrared (IR) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), were performed to determinate structural and morphological behavior.
