Coal fly ash was modified to zeolitic materials by hydrothermal treatment at 90 ?C. The zeolite synthesis was studied as a function of the mole ratio of Na2O/SiO2 in the reaction mixtures. The results showed that NaP1 zeolite is obtained when the Na2O/SiO2 mole ratio was 0.7. Hydroxysodalite is the dominant zeolite phase in modified fly ash treated with a higher Na2O concentration solution (Na2O/SiO2 = 1.3). The IR and XRD methods were used to determine the phases present in the starting sample and in the zeolitic materials.

This paper reviews the pathways that large volume utility wastes can take which can cause environmental effects. Potential interactions of the environment with land-disposed utility wastes include: (1) effects on local air quality, (2) efforts on soils and vegetation, (3) phytotoxicity, (4) groundwater effeccts, (5) effects on surface waters, and (6) disposal site washout. Both natural and engineered mitigating mechanisms are reviewed.

Zeolite membranes were successfully synthesized from coal fly ash by hydrothermal treatment onto 10-cm-long tubular porous supports. The membranes were characterized from XRD analysis, SEM observation and the pervaporation performance. Under the optimized conditions, LTA-type membrane from coal fly ash showed fairly efficient for the dehydration of organic liquids. The maximum selectivity reached more than 3000 with accompanying flux as high as 3.0 kg/(m2•h) for separation of 90 wt% EtOH aqueous solution at 75 °C.

Tobermorite was synthesized successfully from waste incineration fly ash by hydrothermal treatment in the presence of sodium hydroxide solution. The tobermorite synthesis was examined as a function of reaction temperature, time, and NaOH concentration. The formation of tobermorite was identified in all of the fly ash treated with NaOH at 180 °C, followed by the minor generations of sodalite and cancrinite phases with increasing NaOH concentration and extending reaction time. The NaOH-treated fly ash revealed the uptake behaviors for Cs+ and NH4+, whereas the fly ash untreated with NaOH solution did not show that. The uptake amounts of resulting products were also determined: 0.40 mmol/g for Cs+ and 0.35 mmol/g for NH4+ in the fly ash treated with 2.0 M NaOH at 180 °C for 20 h.
