The various feed rate and cutting speed have an important influence on cutting force, tool wear and chip morphology in machining titanium alloy. Cutting experiments are carried out analyzing the titanium alloy Ti6Al4V under different cutting speed and feed rate, the cutting force values are obtained. The analysis results show that the dominant wear pattern is adhesion wear and chipping. And the tool wear also has an influence on chip morphology.

Titanium alloy Ti6Al4V has poor machinability, which leads to high unit cutting force and cutting temperature, rapid tool failure. In this study, the effect of the cutting speed, feed rate and cooling condition on cutting force and cutting temperature is critically analysed by turning experiment. At the same time, the relationship is established among tool wear, cutting force and cutting temperature. This investigation has shown that cutting speed is the decisive factor which increasing cutting force and cutting temperature. In the process of turning, tool wear results in high amounts of heat and mechanical stress, which leads to serious tool wear. The Minimal Quantity Lubrication reduces the frictional condition at the chip-tool, decreases cutting force and cutting temperature, and delays the tool failure.

In this paper, the cutting experiment was used to study the influence of various cutting parameters on cutting force when rough turning titanium alloy (TC4) with the whole CBN tool. The results indicate that among the cutting speed, feed rate and cutting depth, the influence of the cutting depth is the most significant on cutting force; the next is the feed rate and the cutting speed is at least.

Ti6Al4V alloy is widely used in the aircraft industry, marine and the commercial applications due to its excellent comprehensive properties. However, its poor machinability prevents it from application widely, and the rapid tool wear is one of the key factors. The FEM models of cutting titanium alloy are established. The effect of tool wear on chip morphology, cutting temperature and cutting force are studied. The simulation results show that: the cutting force and cutting temperature will rise with the increase of tool wear. Furthermore, the degree of chip deformation will improve, but the frequency of serrated chip tooth occurred will decrease.

Tool coatings can improve the machinability performance of difficult-to-cut materials such as titanium alloys. Therefore, in the current work, high-speed milling of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy was carried out to determine the performance of various coated cutting tools. Five types of coated carbide inserts – monolayer TiCN, AlTiN, TiAlN and two layers TiCN + TiN and AlTiN + TiN, which were deposited by physical vapour deposition – were employed in the experiments. Tool wear, cutting force, surface roughness and chip morphology were evaluated and compared for different coated tools. To understand the tool wear modes and mechanisms, detailed scanning electron microscope analysis combined with energy dispersive X-ray of the worn inserts were conducted. Abrasion, adhesion, chipping and mechanical crack on flank face and coating delamination, adhesion and crater wear on rake face were observed during high-speed milling of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy. In terms of tool wear, the lowest value was obtained with TiCN-coated insert. It was also found that at the beginning of the machining pass TiAlN-coated insert and at the end of machining TiCN-coated insert gave the lowest cutting force and surface roughness values. No change in chip morphology was observed with different coated inserts.

It is necessary for cutting simulation to determine the friction model at the tool-chip interface suitable for metal cutting process. Cutting force experiments in orthogonal turning titanium alloy TI6AL4V are carried out with cement carbide tool KW10. The Coulomb frictions at the tool-chip interface are calculated based on measured cutting force, and the friction model is regressed, where cutting speed and feed rate are presented.

Milling tests were undertaken to analyze and compare the machinability of hydrogenated titanium alloy Ti6Al4V. Uncoated WC-Co tool inserts were used in the study. The feed and the depth of milling were maintained constant, and only the milling speed was varied because it is the most affecting parameter. Results showed that cutting force and tool life were greatly influenced by the contents of hydrogen. Tool life decreased at first and then increased gradually with the increase of hydrogen content, and the maximum magnitude decrease of tool life is about 0.2%H, meanwhile, the maximum tool life is about 0.5%H. However, with the increase of cutting speed, the favorable effect of hydrogen on the titanium alloy machinability would be weakened even disappear, therefore, 50-100m/min would be a suitable choice of cutting speed.

Titanium alloys are widely used in aerospace industry due to their excellent mechanical properties. Because of their low thermal conductivity, high chemical activity, large friction coefficient and so on, such problems occur during the cutting process as high cutting temperature, large specific cutting force and serious tool wear, leading to low machining efficiency. The cutting force, forms of tool wear; wear mechanics were experimentally studied and analyzed while machining titanium alloy TC4 using carbide tools YS8 and YG8. The experimental results indicated that the tool wear of YG8 influenced cutting force not very remarkable when flank wear smaller than 0.25mm. But when the flank wear was bigger than 0.25mm, the cutting force increased rapidly with the flank wear increased. And the tool wear influenced the cutting force dramatically. The forms of tool wear during machining TC4 using carbide tool were adhesion wear, tool chipping and. The desquamation and chipping of tool caused by adhesion wear were the main reason of the tool failure.

The chip formation and morphology are definitely affected by tool geometry and cutting parameters such as cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cutting. An experiment investigation was presented to study the influence of tool geometry on chip morphology, and to clarify the effect of different cutting parameters on chip deformation in orthogonal turning the wheel steel. The result obtained in this study showed that tool geometry affected the chip morphology significantly; cutting speed was the most contributive factor in forming saw-tooth chip.

In recent years, the machinability of magnesium alloy is concerned more and more by the public. In this paper, a study on the cutting properties of magnesium alloy AZ91D when dry turning with kentanium cutting tools is presented. It shows the cutting force measured by a data acquisition system which is made up of Kistler9257B piezoelectric crystal sensor dynamometer, Kistler5070A10100 charge amplifier and computer. The effect of cutting parameters on cutting force was studied, and the experimental formula was built. The tool wear and chip characteristics were observed with KYKY-EM3200 electron scanning microscope and EDAX PV9900 alpha ray spectrometer, while the surface roughness of the workpiece was measured with 2205 profilometer. Results showed that the cutting depth was the main influence factor on cutting force, followed by feed rate and cutting speed . The main form of tool wear showed to be diffusive wear and adhesive wear. The feed rate had the main influence on chip form and the workpiece surface roughness, cutting speed was less effective, the cutting depth was the least.
