LATE QUATERNARY HISTORY OF THE NORTHERN BEETLE FAUNA OF NORTH AMERICA: A SYNTHESIS OF FOSSIL AND DISTRIBUTIONAL EVIDENCE

AbstractFossils from sites of Late Quaternary age in North America provide tangible evidence of temporal changes in the character of the northern beetle fauna. Based on a synthesis of the fossil data with analyses of the present distributions for northern species, a rudimentary model is proposed to explain the recent history of the fauna of the arctic and the boreal forest.An open-ground beetle fauna of arctic–subarctic affinities had become established along the southern margin of the Laurentide ice sheet in the midcontinent by 20 500 years before present (yr B.P.). Climatic warming decimated this fauna throughout lowland areas at some time between 16 700 and 15 300 yr B.P.; small populations of some arctic–subarctic species, however, survived within either alpine habitats of the Cordillera and Appalachians or specialized environments associated with stagnant ice.Populations of the same arctic–subarctic beetle species existed within the ice-free Alaska–Yukon refugium throughout the late Wisconsinan. During the Holocene, this region served as the principal centre-of-origin for the dispersal of the arctic–subarctic beetle fauna.The beetle fauna of the boreal forest was also displaced southward by Late Wisconsinan glaciation. By 15 300 yr B.P., however, this fauna had largely replaced the arctic–subarctic beetle fauna along the ice margin of the midcontinent. Evidence provided by fossils from a series of sites demonstrates that beetle species of the boreal forest dispersed northward into Canada as the ice front receded.

AbstractOrganic material exposed within a small swale fill in Pit 6 of the Wedron Silica Sand Co. near Wedron in LaSalle County, Illinois, includes well-preserved pollen, plant macrofossils, and insect remains. This material occurs in slackwater sediment in the lower part of the Peddicord Formation, which was deposited as existing valleys were dammed by fluvial aggradation during the initial late Wisconsinan advance of Laurentide ice into the Wedron area. Wood from the organic horizon has a radiocarbon age of 21,460 ± 470 yr B.P. (ISGS-1486). The pollen spectrum is dominated byPicea, Pinus, and Cyperaceae. Plant macrofossils comprise a mix of boreal-forest taxa, includingPicea, Larix laricina, and the mossCampylium stellatum; subarctic species includingBetula glandulosa, Empetrum nigrum, andSelaginella selaginoides; along with the predominantly arcticVaccinium uliginosumvar.alpinum, Dryas integrifolia, andRhododendron lapponicum. The insect fauna contains the western montane ground beetleOpisthius richardsoni; several arctic-subarctic ground beetles includingDiacheila polita, Helophorus sibiricus, andPterostichus (Cryobius) caribou; and a diverse assemblage of insects that today inhabit the boreal forest. We interpret the biotic record to record a phase in the transition from closed boreal forest to open tundra as climatic conditions deteriorated in advance of continental glaciation.

During late Wisconsinan glaciation, the northern part of the Hermitage area was glaciated by Newfoundland-centred ice and the southern part by a small, complex, upland ice field, broken by nunataks. During deglaciation a lobe of Newfoundland ice dammed a lake at the head of Bay d'Espoir in which a series of small glaciolacustrine deltas were deposited. Valley glaciers from the southern ice cap reached the south coast at several locations, most notably near Harbour Breton, where a large glaciomarine delta was formed during deglaciation when sea level stood 22–24 m above present HWM. Except for three occurrences of till, no deposits were found that can be attributed to glacial events older than late Wisconsinan.

This chapter introduces the ‘History of the Birds of Europe’, a great book project initiated by Richard Bowdler Sharpe, in partnership with Dresser. The chapter discusses scientific travellers and fieldwork, and the growth of formal and informal scientific travel through the nineteenth century. It describes the collecting manuals and instructions for collectors that were issued to encourage collectors to produce good-quality specimens that could enter into exchanging networks and museum collections. The chapter explores Dresser’s collecting network by discussing the activities of those who provided him with specimens from Europe, Northern Asia, North America and the Arctic. It emphasises and explores his personal relationships with field collectors.

AbstractThis paper outlines the known distribution of eight xeric grassland-adapted species of Lygaeidae, and examines these distributions with respect to the glacial history of North America during the Pleistocene, and past and present distribution of grassland vegetation. Four of these species (Neosuris castanea, Sisamnes claviger, Ligyrocoris latimarginatus, and Melanopleurus perplexus) probably survived the Pleistocene in refugia south of the Late Wisconsinan ice sheet. Differences in climatic requirements may explain the variations in geographic distribution exhibited by these four insects and a methodology for testing this is discussed. The four other species (Crophius ramosus, Kolenetrus plenus, Slaterobius insignis, and Emblethis vicarius) may have occurred in the north prior to 1.2 mya and survived the Late Pleistocene in both the northern Beringian refugium and in southern refugia. Molecular systematics, especially use of DNA restriction site or sequence data, might provide the evidence needed to test historical biogeographic postulates based on the extant distribution of these species.

Thick valley-fill sediments in the vicinity of Williams Lake, British Columbia, provide a detailed record of the late Quaternary history of an area near the centre of the former Cordilleran Ice Sheet. Stratigraphic units assigned to the late Wisconsinan Fraser Glaciation, the preceding (penultimate) glaciation, and the present interglaciation are described. Especially noteworthy are (1) thick units of sand and gravel deposited by braided streams, perhaps during periods of ice-sheet growth; and (2) complex glaciolacustrine sediments that accumulated in ice-dammed lakes during periods of deglaciation.Glaciers from the Coast and Cariboo mountains coalesced and flowed north over central British Columbia during late Wisconsinan time. Fraser Glaciation advance sediments and older Pleistocene deposits were partially removed by this ice sheet, and the eroded remnants were mantled with till. At the end of the Fraser Glaciation, the Cordilleran Ice Sheet downwasted and retreated southward along an irregular front across the study area. Parts of the ice sheet stagnated and disintegrated into tongues confined to valleys. Sediment carried by melt streams flowing from decaying ice masses was deposited in glacial lakes, in stream channels, and on floodplains.
