Specimens from a swarm of Symphoromyia immaculata (Meigen, 1820) were collected in the act of biting people in a farmhouse in Central Italy. The species is distributed in West and Central Europe and eastwards in Northwest Russia. This is the first record of S. immaculata in Italy, with a documented case of humans suffering from bites of this species.

We report the first documented case of bicephaly in a chondrichthyan, the southern fiddler ray, Trygonorrhina dumerilii, in Australian waters. Females in the latter stages of pregnancy, as confirmed by ultrasound, were captured by hand in Swan Bay, Victoria (38.252°S, 144.616°E) in February 2013 and transported to aquaria. Up to 10 females gave birth in aquaria in early April 2013 to 11 neonates, one of which was a still-born, bicephalic neonate. Magnetic resonance imagery of the bicephalic neonate displayed the presence of two parallel vertebral columns running the entire length of the animal, diverging into two well formed heads. Morphological measurements were also made, comparing the bicephalic neonate to normal neonates. The cause of bicephaly is unknown, although congenital and environmental stressors during development may cause this condition.

This paper provides the first report of the snail-killing fly genus Dichetophora Rondani, 1868 on the Korean peninsula with the discovery of two new species, D. koreana sp. nov. and D. nigricorpa sp. nov. Descriptions and illustrations of the new species and keys to the Palearctic species of this genus are given.

The islands of Tinos and Syros in the Cyclades Archipelago, Greece, have a hilly terrain, a mild Mediterranean climate and vegetation adapted to drought conditions. Caper (<em>Capparis</em> <em>spinosa</em> L.) is highly adapted to arid environments and grows successfully during the Mediterranean summer. In August 2015, we detected serious infestations on wild caper by <em>Eurydema</em> <em>eckerleini</em> (Pentatomidae), which was formerly considered a species endemic to Crete and the Peloponnese, with an isolated report in Turkey. This is the first record of the presence of<em> E. eckerleini</em> in the Cyclades.

The blood infection by Trypanosoma sp. in tuvira (Gymnotus aff. inaequilabiatus) from the Pantanal wetland was reported in this study. Ten fish from the Paraguay River in the Pantanal were evaluated for the presence of hemoflagellates. Trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma sp. were observed in blood smears from three fish (30% prevalence) and some forms were seen to be undergoing division. Using the diagnostic methods of fresh examination and blood centrifugation in hematocrit capillary tubes, the prevalence rate was 80%. This is the first report of Trypanosoma sp. in tuvira in Brazil.

Stellaria ruderalis is an annual (semi)ruderal species from the S. media group, which has been recently published by Lepší et al., therefore, its distribution range in Europe is insufficiently known. This paper is based on field exploration of 39 localities of S. media s.l. in the Lviv region, Western Ukraine. The first report of S. ruderalis in Ukraine comes from Dmytre village, where it grows at roadsides and arable field edges in a semiruderal habitat of the alliance Aegopodion podagrariae. As only a single population was found, Stellaria ruderalis is obviously still spreading in Western Ukraine, a fact which was reported already for northern Central Europe. This record represents the northeasternmost locality of the species so far known.

Introduction: Pentavalent antimonials are the first drug of choice in the treatment of tegumentary leishmaniasis. Data on ototoxicity related with such drugs is scarcely available in literature, leading us to develop a study on cochleovestibular functions. Case Report: A case of a tegumentary leishmaniasis patient, a 78-year-old man who presented a substantial increase in auditory threshold with tinnitus and severe rotatory dizziness during the treatment with meglumine antimoniate, is reported. These symptoms worsened in two weeks after treatment was interrupted. Conclusion: Dizziness and tinnitus had already been related to meglumine antimoniate. However, this is the first well documented case of cochlear-vestibular toxicity related to meglumine antimoniate.

A new record of Plectropomus pessuliferus (Serranidae: Epinephelinae) wasdocumented based on morphological characters and DNA barcoding. The species was collectedduring a regular survey for making an inventory of reef associated fishes in Saint Martin`sIsland, Bangladesh. This is the first report of roving coral grouper from the marine waters ofBangladesh validated by morpho-meristic analysis and DNA barcoding. This is also the firstreport from the northern Bay of Bengal.

Abstract Background: Although there is a vast literature concerning insecticide resistance (IR) in Plasmodium vectors from African and Asian continents, similar studies with Neotropical anophelines are scares. Herein we evaluated the IR profile of Anopheles albitarsis s.s. of a laboratory colony and a natural population collected around a rice plantation field. The laboratory colony is original from a collection performed in this same region more than two decades ago. Methods: We collected An. albitarsis females while resting after blood feeding, around rice field plantations in Massaranduba, SC, Brazil. These females laid their eggs in the laboratory, and the larvae were raised in parallel with our lab colony. To be sure about the field samples’ taxonomic status, we amplified and sequenced the mitochondrial COI gene of a sampling of field captured mosquitoes. We performed a simplified knockdown test with larvae exposed to permethrin and deltamethrin and submitted adult females to a WHO like tube test with the pyrethroids permethrin, deltamethrin, and etofenprox, in addition to the organophosphate malathion. A segment of the voltage-gated sodium channel gene (NaV) was amplified and cloned. Based on the observed sequences, we developed a TaqMan genotyping assay for the variation L1014F and calculated the genotypic and allelic frequencies concerning this SNP in the field population.Results: The COI analyses confirmed the taxonomic status of An. albitarsis s.s in laboratory and field samples. The field population was resistant to pyrethroids but not to malathion. We observed the substitutions L1019R, F1020S, and the classical kdr L1014F in the NaV gene. This classical kdr allele was present under low frequencies in the overall field population (2%), although more frequent in pyrethroid-resistant insects.Conclusions: The An. albitarsis s.s. population from Massaranduba was resistant to pyrethroids, likely due to selection pressure exerted by agrochemical pesticides. We registered the classical kdr mutation in a Brazilian Anopheles species for the first time. Further investigations are necessary to disclose additional resistance mechanisms.

We report the first record of Conura (Conura) maculata (Fabricius, 1787) in the province of Corrientes, Argentina. A total of 85 adult wasps of C. maculata were obtained from 3 chrysalides of Opsiphanes invirae amplificatus Stichel, 1904, a lepidopteran pest of native and exotic palm trees. This is the first report of the occurrence of this parasitoid in the province of Corrientes, extending this species’ known distribution in the country. This is also the first report of the parasitoid-host interaction between these 2 species for Argentina.
