Contextualisation of the New Testament within a postmodern paradigm: Creation of meaning or application of meaning? Owing to a largely postmodernist paradigm new emphasis on preaching the Bible in a modern-day context has emerged over the last few decades. Scholars operating within the sphere of this new paradigm are committed to the deconstructionist views of text and meaning. Rejecting the notion of “the meaning” of a text, their idea of contextualisation is to create a new meaning for a text for each new context. Consequently, a number of “contextual theologies” have arisen in which the context of the reader has become a determinant for the meaning of the text. In this article, however, the contextualisation of the Biblical message is argued from a Reformed viewpoint. Based on the conviction that the Bible, as Word of God, is not time-bound but time-addressed, it is argued that although the Biblical text originated within the context of the first readers, it is not restricted to the context of the first readers. The Biblical text also addresses the context of the readers of all times. Hence contextualisation does not imply creating a new meaning for every new context, but rather finding the link between original context and contemporary context. The hermeneutical process identifying and applying this link is known as hermeneusis.

The Bible is a Christian holy book and is believed to be the word of God, even though there is a lot of technical controversy with its terminology. The Bible is written in two major languages, Hebrew and Greek, besides some parts in Aramaic. In the process of becoming an Indonesian-language holy book, there are controversies that invite a lot of disputes, even some of the most correct claims. This includes the use of the word "Allah", which some groups consider inappropriate, because it is not the true identity of the Creator. The use of the word God to show the Creator is considered a fatal act, including the identity of other gods, so the use of YHWH or Yahweh is what the Bible should use. This article is a qualitative review of the literature using descriptive methods. In conclusion, the use of the word God in the Bible is not wrong, because it is a legacy from the apostles in the New Testament. Abstrak Alkitab merupakan kitab suci orang Kristen dan diimani sebagai firman Allah, sekalipun ada banyak kontroversi secara teknis dengan pengistilahannya. Alkitab ditulis dalam dua bahasa besar, Ibrani dan Yunani, selain beberapa bagian dengan bahasa Aram. Dalam prosesnya menjadi kitab suci berbahasa Indonesia ada hal-hal kontroversi yang mengundang banyak perselisihan, bahkan tidak sedikit klaim yang paling benar. Termasuk di dalamnya pengunaan kata “Allah”, yang oleh sebagian kelompok dianggap tidak pantas, karena bukan identitas Sang Pencipta yang sejati. Penggunaan kata Allah untuk menunjukkan Sang Pencipta dianggap tindakan yang fatal, memasukkan identitas allah lain, sehingga penggunaan YHWH atau Yahweh itulah yang seharusnya digunakan Alkitab. Artikel ini merupakan kajian kualitatif literatur yang menggunakan metode deskriptif. Kesimpulannya, penggunaan kata Allah dalam Alkitab bukanlah sesuatu yang salah, karena itu merupakan warisan dari para rasul di Perjanjian Baru.

This article reflects on hermeneutics in the widest sense of the concept and not on the detailed technicalities from philosophical and other perspectives. Hermeneutics will be taken to refer to the whole act and process of understanding. It is done with special reference to how the understanding of Scripture and specifically the New Testament of theologians of the Netherdutch Reformed Church over the past seven decades, is reflected in the work in the HTS Theological Studies journal. It is clear that their approach to the understanding and concretisation of the message of the New Testament was one of greatest respect for Scripture. The basic tenet throughout was that the Word of God was to be found in the Bible. There was no assumption that Bible and Word of God were identified on one and the same level. Taking the Bible as literature seriously implied that the best scientific methods had to be found and implemented in this search for the meaning of the Word of God for the Church’s message and practice in the world.

A practical theological model for the relationship Old Testament/New TestamentFor all Christians the Bible consists of the Old and New Testament. The relationship, however, between these two parts is a hermeneutic-theological problem which confronts the communicative praxis of the Christian faith. Therefore it is necessary to develop a hermeneutic-theological theory for Christians which can serve as a paradigm within which the texts of the Old as well as that of the New Testament may regard as equal authoritative Word of God. As far as this study is concerned, there is but one approach only which can achieve this and that is a theocentric approach to both Testaments. A theocentric approach to the relationship Old Testament/New Testament, a) is capable of treating both Testaments as equal authoritative Word of God, b) prevents the practice of "two-sermons-in-one-sermon" in an attempt to make the message of the Old Testament more Christian like, c) is especially capable of communicating the message of the Old Testament in the communicative praxis of the Christian community and the modern society without reading by force Christ into the Old Testament.

Во внимание должен приниматься не только богословский или исторический контекст, но также чисто филологические аспекты: семантика, интонация, языковой узус Нового Завета и Септуагинты, возможные разночтения и т. д. Патриарх убеждён, что при правильном пользовании этим инструментарием можно объяснить все кажущиеся противоречащими высказывания Св. Писания таким образом, что они окажутся в полном согласии друг с другом. The first treatise from «Amphilochia» by the St. Patriarch Photios expounds the general principles of the biblical exegesis on a specific example of certain passages from the Bible. It is not just the theological or historical context that has to be taken into consideration, but also purely philological aspects, such as semantics, intonation, the language usage of the New Testament and Septuagint, possible variant readings etc. The Patriarch is convinced, that the correct application of these tools makes it possible to perfectly harmonize all seemingly contradictory statements of the Scriptures.

AbstractSwami Vivekananda was the most influential pioneer of a Yogi Christ, illustrating well over a century ago how the life and teachings of Jesus might be incorporated within a larger Hindu worldview—and then presented back to Western audiences. Appropriation of Jesus, one of the central symbols of the West, might be viewed as the ultimate act of counter-Orientalism. This article begins by providing a brief biography of Vivekananda and the modern Hinduism that nurtured him and that he propagated. He articulated an inclusivist vision of Advaita Vedanta as the most compelling vision of universal religion. Next, the article turns to Vivekananda's views of Christianity, for which he had little affection, and the Bible, which he knew extraordinarily well. The article then systematically explores Vivekananda's engagement with the New Testament, revealing a clear hermeneutical preference for the Gospels, particularly John. Following the lead of biblical scholars, Vivekananda made a distinction between the Christ of the Gospels and the Jesus of history, offering sometimes contradictory conclusions about the historicity of elements associated with Jesus's life. Finally, the article provides a detailed articulation of Vivekananda's Jesus—a figure at once familiar to Christians but, in significant ways, uniquely accommodated to Hindu metaphysics. Vivekananda demonstrated a robust understanding and discriminating use of the Christian Bible that has not been properly recognized. He deployed this knowledge to launch an important and long-lived pattern: an attractive, fleshed out depiction of Jesus of Nazareth, transformed from the Christian savior into a Yogi model of self-realization. Through his efforts, Jesus became an indisputably Indian religious figure, no longer just a Christian one. The Yogi Christ remains a prominent global religious figure familiar to Hindus, Christians, and those of other faiths alike.

Ordinary Christians’ responses to a dramatized reading of the New Testament, together with reflection on research in the area of performance criticism, suggests that understanding of the Bible and spiritual encounter with its texts may be promoted by the reading aloud of, and listening to, substantial portions of the Bible in an unfamiliar format; this might be found in a dramatized presentation and/or a previously unencountered translation. This practice should form part of any programme designed to promote biblical engagement within churches.

In the Gospel according to St. John it is written that ‘God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have ever-lasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.’ In these familiar words is summed up the message of the Bible as a whole, and of the New Testament in particular. In spite of all that may be said of sin and depravity, of judgment and the wrath of God, the last word is one not of doom but of salvation. The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is a Gospel of salvation, of deliverance and redemption. The news that was carried into all the world by the early Church was the Good News of the grace and love of God, revealed and made known in Jesus Christ His Son. In the words of Paul, it is that ‘God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself’.

Greek for the New Testament: A new paradigm at South African Universities for the teaching of Greek for Theology. The faculty members of the departments of Greek and New Testament of a number of South African Universities have since 1995 been involved in discussions on the teaching of Greek to students who want to study Theology. This article is an updated version of the memorandum the two authors tabled for the discussion. The memorandum was discussed in 1996, and during the 1997 meeting it was finished. The article gives an overview of the consensus achieved. First an analysis of the present situation is given (2), on the grounds of which the need for a change in approach is motivated (3).  Then the outcomes for the teaching of Greek are discussed (4). Appropriote methods of learning and teaching are proposed (5) as well as methods of evaluation (6). It is also argued that the Universities have the obligation to provide Greek scholars for the future (7). The article closes with a plea for closer co-operation between Greek and New Testament departnents Ilt South African Universities (8).

AbstractAs an ardent advocate for Church reform in the late fourteenth century, John Wyclif found in Jewish history and practices a wealth of material upon which to draw when chastising the present Christian clerical class. Wyclif likens modern friars and prelates to the Jews of the Bible, and concludes that in their avarice and zeal for unscriptural human traditions they have in fact have proven themselves even greater enemies of Christ than the Jews themselves. Though Jews are consistently used as foils, they are not the recipients of gratuitous epithets. Noteworthy is the fact that Wyclif most often employs the term perfidia when speaking of Christian clerics rather than Jews. When he does speak of avarice, treachery, and murder on the part of the Jews those occasions are largely limited to the clerical class, and then in an effort to admonish the Christian clergy of his own day. As Wyclif read the New Testament accounts of Christ and the apostles, thereby forming his vision of an ideal Church, so he read of their adversaries and accepts them as the model for all who oppose his idealized Church.

We can trace a revival of theology in the Reformed Churches in the last quarter of a century. The new theological interest merits being called a revival of theology, for there has been a fresh and more thorough attention given to certain realities, either ignored or treated with scant notice for a considerable time previously.First among such realities now receiving more of the attention which their relevance and authority deserve, is the Bible, the record of the Word of God. There is an invigorating and convincing quality about theology which is Biblical throughout, being based on the witness of the Scriptures as a whole. The valuable results of careful Biblical scholarship had had an adverse effect on theology in so far as theologians had completely separated the Old Testament from the New in their treatment of Biblical doctrine, or in expanding Christian doctrine, had spoken of the theological teaching of the Synoptic Gospels, the Pauline Epistles, the Johannine writings, and so on, as if there were no such thing as one common New Testament witness. It is being seen anew that the Holy Scriptures contain a complete history of God's saving action. The presence of the complete Bible open at the heart of the Church, recalls each succeeding Christian generation to that one history of God's saving action, to which the Church is the living witness. The New Testament is one, for its Lord is one, and Christian theology must stand four-square on the foundation of its whole teaching.
