Background: Family planning practices could be determined through adopting proper knowledge and positive couple attitudes towards the use of family planning which would most likely result in favourable family decisions which would benefitted both the individual and the overall country welfare.Methods: A cross sectional study has been conducted using a structured questionnaire administered through face-to-face interview to a convenient sample of 151 pregnant women attending the obstetrics and gynaecology outpatient clinic at the Armed Forces Hospital in the southern region of Saudi Arabia in December 2014.Results: The results revealed that modern methods were popular among women. In general we found positive attitudes towards family planning among the sampled women as two third of the women have ever used contraceptives. However, the present study showed that 34% of women had unmet need of family planning. Women’s age, marriage years and number of children were all found to be associated factors with unmet need.Conclusions: National organized family planning programs might help satisfying the family planning needs for the families. Further studies regarding southern men’s knowledge and attitudes towards family planning is recommended.

Oral health is perhaps the most neglected aspect of healthcare for persons living in rehabilitation centers, compared to the general population. The caregivers play a vital role in administering daily oral care to residents in rehabilitation centers: The aim of the present questionnaire-based study was to evaluate the caregivers’ knowledge, attitude and practices towards oral healthcare at centers for the intellectually disabled in the Southern region of Saudi Arabia (SA). The present study was designed as a cross-sectional one-point time survey. The samples were selected by using a non-probability convenience sampling method. The self-administered closed-ended questionnaire comprised of 22 items divided into four sections, which was designed to elicit the demographic information, awareness of oral care, attitude towards oral health and practice of the oral healthcare regime among the participants. Of the164 participants, 53.0% and 47.0% were male and female, respectively. Most of the participants—54.9%—were between 30–39 years of age. Participants were almost equally distributed between educational groups, and about 87% had more than 2 years of experience. A brief overview showed a fair level of knowledge and attitude among 61.6% and 58.5% of respondents, respectively. Participants with an education level above that of high school showed good knowledge and attitude scores (p < 0.05), whereas females showed better attitude scores compared to the males (p < 0.05). Respondents mentioned the difficulties they faced while treating the subjects. The special healthcare workers generally had acceptable oral health knowledge and practices. Caregivers who had lower education levels should be advised for training programs that addressed the importance of oral health services.

Background: Globally, the number of visually impaired persons still increases; this will increase demand for more eye care services, programmes, and treatment for the visually disabled individuals. Consequently, the first step is to map the size of the problem. Detection of the related factors of visual loss and blindness is vital to build appropriate treatment, rehabilitation, and service programmes. Public awareness regarding these eye related health conditions is the first step for mapping the problem and public concern for early detection and management. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted focused on all adults in Aseer region. The study was conducted during the period from May 2020 to September 2020. Data were collected using pre-structured online questionnaire established by the researchers after intensive literature review and expert’s consultation. The questionnaire data included participants’ socio-demographic data, awareness regarding eye diseases was evaluated and its main domains included glaucoma related awareness, cataract awareness, diabetic retinopathy awareness, refractive errors awareness, and eye dryness. Results: A total of 1,014 participants in the southern region of Saudi Arabia completed the survey. Participants’ ages ranged from 18 to 75 years with mean age of 33.8 (12.2%) years old. Exactly 641 (63.2%) participants were males. Exactly 23.1% of participants defined cataract as a change in lens colour and 17.8% reported that it is an age related disorder. Glaucoma was defined as a disease that causes optic nerve damage by 22.2% of the participants while 18.6% defined the disease as a condition causing diminished peri-ocular vision. DR was defined as retinal vascular lesion disorder by 23.6% of the participants and 42.9% classified the disease as one of the DM complications. In total, good awareness regarding cataract was detected among 13.4% of the participants and 10% had good awareness regarding glaucoma. Conclusions & recommendations: In conclusion, the study revealed that overall public awareness regarding common eye diseases was very poor especially among the old aged and females.
