INHERITANCE OF SAWFLY REACTION AND STEM SOLIDNESS IN SPRING WHEAT CROSSES: STEM SOLIDNESS

Inheritance of stem solidness was studied in populations of F3 and B2 lines from the Red Bobs × C.T. 715 and Redman × S-615 (Triticum aestivum L.) crosses and backcrosses. The data supported the hypothesis that the varieties in each cross differed by four genes for stem solidness. In both crosses, one gene exerted a major influence in that its allele for hollowness in the homozygous condition was epistatic to the other three genes. The other three genes within each cross were similar in their influence on solidness. Between the two crosses, corresponding genes differed in some degree.Genetic analyses and correlation coefficients both revealed a close association between sawfly resistance and stem solidness in the Red Bobs × C.T. 715 cross indicating that the stem solidness character was largely responsible for conditioning the degree of sawfly reaction in a plant.In both crosses, a weak negative correlation was found between stem solidness and height. Stem solidness was not associated with bunt (race T-2) reaction, glume color, awn type, or heading date.

Inheritance of reaction to the wheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus Nort., was studied in populations of F3 and B2 lines from the cross Red Bobs × C.T. 715 (Triticum aestivum L.), and the respective backcrosses. The data supported the hypothesis that the varieties differed by three genes for sawfly reaction. A major influence was attributable to one gene. Its allele for susceptibility when homozygous was epistatic to the other two genes. Its allele for resistance was twice as effective as either of the other genes in conditioning resistance. The other two genes lacked dominance and were equal in their influence on sawfly reaction.Correlation coefficients showed that sawfly reaction was not associated with reaction to race T-2 of Tilletia caries (DC.) Tul., heading date, or awnedness. Sawfly susceptibility was weakly correlated with height.

Inheritance of reaction to race T-2 of Tilletia caries (DC.) Tul. was studied in populations of F3 and B2 lines from the cross Redman × S-615 (Triticum aestivum L.) and the respective backcrosses. Redman and S-615 were found to differ by three genes for bunt reaction. Redman possesses a major gene recessive for resistance, and two minor genes. Each of the minor genes is capable of conditioning a moderate degree of resistance alone but together they are capable of conditioning high resistance as a result of geometric gene actionCorrelation coefficients show that bunt reaction to race T-2 is not associated with wheat stem sawfly (Cephus cinctus Nort.) reaction, total stem solidness, solidness in each internode, awn type, glume color, plant height, or heading date.

An experiment was carried out to study the grain growth pattern of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars and to find out association and linear regression of spike weight and grain weight with time. Spike characters indicated that cultivar differences were significant in all the cases with a few exceptions. Linear regression and correlation coefficients revealed that the association between both spike weight and grain weight with time were highly positively significant among the cultivars but their regression coefficients were non- significant. Identifying QTLs (quantitative trait loci) that control yield related traits under a stressed environment is very useful for marker-assisted selection (MAS). Marker-trait associations (MTA) for several agro-morphological traits were performed with 130 Tunisian and exotic spring bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) accessions under a semi-arid climate in El Kef, Tunisia. Grain yield and other important traits were evaluated. A population structural analysis identified two sub populations. In total, 29 MTAs were detected at –log P ≥ 3 using an MLM (mixed linear model), and only 5 MTAs with –log P ≥ 4. The locus on chromosome 4A was detected to control the heading date accounting for up to 22% of the trait variance. Two other loci located on chromosomes 3B and 7B were found to be stable during the two cropping seasons and have a pleiotropic effect on the heading date, yield, internodes length and grain per spike. These two regions are candidates for further genetic analysis.

Early generation data consisting of F1 heterosis, F1, F2 and F3 mean performances, parent-offspring regression, and F2–F3 intergeneration correlation were used to identify potentially promising spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em Thell) crosses in terms of yield, kernel weight and protein content. The F1 test identified one high-yielding cross out of six showing significant level of higher parent (38%) and mid-parent (70%) heterosis for yield, respectively. The top yielding cross, viz. Glenlea × NB505, in F1 was also the second highest yielding population in F2 and the best yielder in F3 based on two locations. Hence, although F2 single plant productivity measurements misplaced the rankings of some of the crosses, F1 and F3 performances indicated the relative potential of the different populations. Most crosses showed nonsignificant F2–F3 regression and correlation coefficients for yield but significant coefficients for kernel weight. For protein content highly significant F2–F3 regression and correlation coefficients were observed only for crosses involving the high protein parent. The use in F1 of weight-free selection indices involving yield, kernel weight and protein content ranked Glenlea × NB505 as the best of six populations whereas in F3 the same cross had the best aggregate merit when only yield and kernel weight were considered in the index. The inclusion of protein content in the index favored a high protein cross, Sinton × Glenlea.Key words: Wheat, Triticum aestivum, heterosis, parent-offspring regression, intergeneration correlation, selection index

Cytogenetic analysis of selected F5 lines of the pentaploid hybrid, Rescue (Triticum aestivum L. emend. Thell.) × Golden Ball (T. durum Desf.) showed that chromosome XVI is the member of the D genome of Rescue that prevents transfer of the more solid top culm internode of Golden Ball to hexaploid segregates. It also produces a lax spike. Chromosome XX, which is the D-genome chromosome mainly responsible for the hollowness of hollow-stemmed hexaploids, probably has little effect in Rescue. Long awns were associated with low chromosome number but not with stem solidness or dense spike; therefore, the chromosome that suppresses awn development is probably not XVI.Three 42-chromosome segregates from the cross were more solid in the top internode than Rescue, presumably because of segregation of genes in the A and B genomes. It is unlikely, however, that a fully hexaploid segregate with a top internode as solid as that of Golden Ball can be selected from this hybrid.

 To investigate the responses of growth and antioxidant enzymes to osmotic stress in two different wheat cultivars, one drought tolerant (Heshangtou, HST) and the other drought sensitive (Longchun 15, LC15), 15-day-old wheat seedlings were exposed to osmotic stress of –0.25, –0.50, and –0.75 MPa for 2 days. It is found that osmotic stress decreased shoot length in both wheat cultivars, whereas to a lesser degree in HST than in LC15. The contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) of shoot in both wheat cultivars were increased by osmotic stress. It is clear that MDA contents increased less in the more drought tolerant cultivar HST than in drought sensitive one LC15. On the contrary, POD and CAT activities increased more in HST than LC15 under osmotic stress. As the activity of SOD, however, no significant differences were found between HST and LC15. These results suggest that wheat cultivar HST has higher activities of antioxidant enzymes such as POD and CAT to cope with oxidative damage caused by osmotic stress compared to sensitive LC15.

Silica deposition in the lower glume, lemma, and palea of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Highbury) was investigated using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Silica was present in the outer walls of all the epidermal cells including prickles and papillae of the glume and lemma awns. The glume and the lemma were similar in epidermal silica deposition pattern, both having numerous silicified short trichomes and papillae on inner and outer surfaces. Epidermal long cells and short cells were also silicified. Macrohairs were restricted to isolated areas in these bracts, particularly on the inner surfaces just beneath the awns. The palea was a thin membranous structure differing markedly from the other two bracts. Most of the palea is pressed between the caryopsis and the next floret, and both surfaces are almost devoid of trichomes in these areas. However, at the apex and margins of the palea, macrohairs and papillae were abundant. The results are discussed with respect to possible taxonomic, anatomical, medical, and archaeological implications.
