DETERMINATION OF SOIL CLIMATE CLASSES AND SOIL FAMILIES FOR A LEVEL 3 SURVEY IN THE CORDILLERA

The soil family was used to describe soil map units in an intermediate level survey of British Columbia. The main obstacle to its application was determination of soil climate. Soil climate (soil temperature classes and soil moisture subclasses) was derived from atmospheric climate data. It was then related to climax forest vegetation which was used to locate map unit boundaries. By linking biological characteristics to the soil survey, interpretations for wildlife and forestry were enhanced. At the level in which the survey was conducted, the soil family usefully reflected the soil variation in the landscape while providing ample information for most land use interpretations.

Change in soil moisture regime is highly relevant for agricultural drought, which can be best analyzed in terms of Soil Moisture Deficit Index (SMDI). A macroscale hydrological model Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) was used to simulate the hydro-climatological fluxes including evapotranspiration, runoff, and soil moisture storage to reconstruct the severity and duration of agricultural drought over semi-arid region of India. The simulations in VIC were performed at 0.25° spatial resolution by using a set of meteorological forcing data, soil parameters and Land Use Land Cover (LULC) and vegetation parameters. For calibration and validation, soil parameters obtained from National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning (NBSSLUP) and ESA's Climate Change Initiative soil moisture (CCI-SM) data respectively. The analysis of results demonstrates that most of the study regions (> 80 %) especially for central northern part are affected by drought condition. The year 2001, 2002, 2007, 2008 and 2009 was highly affected by agricultural drought. Due to high average and maximum temperature, we observed higher soil evaporation that reduces the surface soil moisture significantly as well as the high topographic variations; coarse soil texture and moderate to high wind speed enhanced the drying upper soil moisture layer that incorporate higher negative SMDI over the study area. These findings can also facilitate the archetype in terms of daily time step data, lengths of the simulation period, various hydro-climatological outputs and use of reasonable hydrological model.

Abstract: Pangandaran is a district with a coastline of 91 Km, so this district has the potential for coastal tourism that needs to be developed. As a new regency of regional autonomy, demands to carry out construction of facilities and infrastructure to support tourism need to be increased. This study aims to determine the distribution of facilities and infrastructure that need to be developed and to know the factors that influence the determination of the construction of facilities and infrastructure. This research uses qualitative method, data collection is done through literature review and interviews. The results of the study indicate that the factors affecting the distribution of infrastructure include land use, population density, tourism objects, land slope and disaster vulnerability. The analysis shows that the distribution of villages suitable for the development of infrastructure includes the villages of Wonoharjo, Babadan, Pananjang and Pangandaran Village.Keyword: tourism, facilities and infrastructure, thematic maps. Intisari: Pangandaran merupakan kabupaten dengan garis pantai sepanjang 91 Km, sehingga kabupaten ini memiliki potensi pariwisata pantai yang perlu dikembangkan. Sebagai Kabupaten yang baru melakukan otonomi daerah, tuntutan untuk melaksanakan pembangunan sarana dan prasarana guna mendukung pariwisata perlu ditingkatkan. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk untuk mengetahui sebaran sarana dan prasarana yang perlu dikembangkan serta mengetahui faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi penentuan pembangunan sarana dan prasarana. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif, pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui kajian pustaka dan wawancara. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi sebaran sarana prasarana meliputi penggunaan lahan, kepadatan penduduk, obyek wisata, kemiringan lahan dan kerawanan bencana. Dari hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa sebaran desa yang sesuai untuk pengembangan sarana prasarana meliputi Desa Wonoharjo, Babadan, Pananjang dan Desa Pangandaran.Kata kunci: pariwisata, sarana dan prasarana, peta tematik.

Agricultural land use planning should always be guided by a reliable tool to ensure effective decision making in the allocation of land use and activities. The primary aim of this study is to develop a user friendly system on a spatial basis for agricultural land suitability evaluation of four groups of agriculture commodities, including food crops, horticultural crops, perennial (plantation) crops, grazing, and tambak (fish ponds) to guide land use planning. The procedure used is as follows: (i) conducting soil survey based on generated land mapping units; (ii) developing soil database in GIS; and (iii) designing a user friendly system. The data bases of the study were derived from satellite imagery, digital topographic map, soil characteristics at reconnaissance scale, as well as climate data. Land suitability evaluation in this study uses the FAO method. The study produces a spatial based decision support tool called SUFIG-Wilkom that can give decision makers sets of information interactively for land use allocation purposes.This user friendly system is also amenable to various operations in a vector GIS, so that the system may accommodate possible additional assessment of other land use types.

Using heat-balance stem flow gauges, we were able to measure directly and continuously the sap flow rates in two pairs of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] isolines differing in stomatal frequency. Plants with high stomatal frequency transpired significantly more water than the low stomatal frequency plants at high soil moisture levels. Under low soil moisture levels, the water use rate decreased greatly for the high stomatal frequency plants. Plants with low stomatal frequency were able to maintain greater sap flow rates than those with high stomatal frequency. Higher leaf temperatures associated with the low stomatal frequency plants were likely due to lower transpiration rates which reduced evaporative cooling especially under well-watered conditions.
