Preserving airport pavement means guarantying the safety operation of aircraft movements. There are four aspects that cause progressive pavement deterioration, i.e. the construction design and process, selected material, and maintenance management. One of the traffic aspects, jet engine exhaust, has not been discovered yet. The load pattern of the jet exhaust follows the schedule of aircraft traffic. The assumption held in this research is that the thermal load during aircraft movement may generate a high temperature, which is induced into pavement layers. The objective of this research is to determine the temperature gradient in the pavement, caused by the jet exhaust. This paper discusses the process of determining the temperature gradient in four stages, i.e. by carrying out the gap analysis, evaluation of pavement structures, determination of the load path and the magnitude, and defining the temperature gradient. The temperature gradient in the pavement layer is determined through the development of a model of cyclic loading. The thermal cyclic load follows the aircraft schedule pattern. The pavement temperature receives the thermal cyclic load of the sinusoid of solar radiation. The results indicate that the temperature of the pavement is increased and pavement temperature rises by 35 °C. However, after 60 seconds the remaining temperature of the pavement layer decreases to the initial temperature, which is caused by solar radiation.

The combined effect of cyclic and static loads on the mechanical properties of the soft clay was experimentally investigated by conducting undrained cyclic triaxial tests on Shanghai clay. The results show that an increment in either static or cyclic load increases excess pore pressures and axial strains. For a given value of combined cyclic and static loads, the mechanical properties of the soft clay are more sensitive to the cyclic load. Furthermore, the accumulated excess pore pressure and axial strain for a larger cyclic stress ratio and a lower combined stress ratio might overcome that for a lower cyclic stress ratio and a higher combined stress ratio. The mechanical properties of the soft clay after the cyclic load was unloaded were also discussed. It was observed that the excess pore pressure and axial strain under the static load alone decrease gradually with time. The trend of them largely depends on the ratio of cyclic load to static load.

The effects of different thicknesses and configurations of core sutures were studied in human cadaveric flexor tendon repairs. Both straight and cyclic load tests were employed. To exploit the full strength of 4/0 suture material, the Kessler repair using four locked single knots would seem to be appropriate.

The detection of damage in early stage of fatigue is important for a reliable evaluation of gear life and strength. From this point of view, the variation of strain distribution in a tooth due to cyclic load contains useful information because the fatigue crack will initiate as a result of the accumulation of plastic strain. Meanwhile, digital image equipments are widely used in our life and the performance is in progress. We took digital pictures of cyclic loaded tooth by the digital camera and compared with the picture of no load to find displacement. The strain distribution of tooth is calculated by the correlation method using those pictures. The initiation of a micro crack is observed by the method. It is also confirmed by the detection of acoustic emission wave with higher energy. The variation of stress-strain diagram in fatigue process is presented, and this illustrates the increase of strain in the final stage of fatigue.
