buy this issue This special issue of Monthly Review, "China 2020," is the product of a long period of cooperation with critical Chinese Marxist scholars. This has resulted in an extensive series of articles on contemporary Chinese social and economic relations since 2012, to which most of the authors in the present issue have previously contributed. It takes on a special significance due to the growing conflict between the United States and China, making critical Marxist analysis in this area all the more important.

This special issue of the JRAS, guest-edited by Heidi Pauwels University of Washington and Anne Murphy University of British Columbia, brings together an extremely interesting set of articles that collectively explore vernacular perspectives on the emperor Aurangzeb/Alamgir drawn from outside the Persianate heartland of Mughal India. Its beginnings lay in an innovative interdisciplinary panel at the 2014 European Conference on South Asian Studies (ECSAS) held in Zurich in July 2014, which was organised by Heidi and Monika Boehm-Tettelbach (Horstmann). Drawing on vernacular literature, as opposed to more mainstream Persian sources, their authors seek, in various ways, to complicate past and present-day assumptions about the nature of Aurangzeb's rule, how he interacted with his subjects, both Muslim and non-Muslim, and how his subjects in turn viewed him. Aurangzeb (r. 1658–1707 as Alamgir) continues to divide opinion sharply, as reactions to Audrey Truschke's 2017 study Aurangzeb: The Life and Legacy of India's Most Controversial King (Stanford University Press) have recently underlined. Aurangzeb remains a firm fixture in South Asia's twenty-first century ‘culture wars’. By drawing on less-commonly referenced vernacular sources, and hence offering access to less state-centric views of Aurangzeb, this special issue makes a welcome — and very opportune — case for more rounded and nuanced understandings of the emperor and the India in which he lived.

This special issue, “Highly-Ductile Magnesium Alloys: Atomistic-Flow Mechanisms and Alloy Designing”, was introduced to cover all aspects associated with the improvement of the ductility of magnesium (Mg) materials through controlling the atomistic flow mechanisms in Mg. The structural aspects that can also influence the ductility of polycrystalline Mg alloys, such as grain size and basal texture characteristics, are addressed in this issue. Therefore, we hope that the contributions to the present issue can effectively support the research on the ductility of Mg.

In spite of the explosive growth of experimental research in basic neurobiology and neurophysiology of brain components in the past decade, understanding the integrated functioning of the brain remains a significant scientific challenge. Essential for understanding human brain function is the detailed knowledge concerning the spatio-temporal dynamics of neuronal populations and their intricate interactions during cognitive functions. The aim of the present issue is to examine brain dynamics and cognitive functions from a multidisciplinary perspective and to introduce the most recent results in this research frontier. Topics relevant to the special issue include: (i) Modeling brain dynamics at the mesoscopic and macroscopic scales, including dynamical systems with distributed parameters; (ii) Applying tools of discrete mathematics, statistical and quantum physics, network science to describe the dynamics of brains; (iii) Experimental research on brain dynamics from various aspects, including fundamental neurobiology, evoked potentials, functional brain imaging, and cognitive functions; (iv) Clinical neuroscience issues for improved diagnosis of dynamic brain diseases and their potential therapies. This special issue is dedicated to Professor Walter J. Freeman on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Dr. Freeman produced breakthrough contributions to research on brain dynamics over the past five decades. The present issue covers all aspects of neurodynamics, starting from neural populations of high-level cognition and consciousness, as well as philosophical aspects and practical implementations on digital computers and hardware designs.
