Vernacular Literacy Practices in Present-day Mali: Combining Ethnography and Textual Analysis to Understand Multilingual Texts: Aïssatou Mbodj-Pouye and Cécile Van Den Avenne

Resumo Neste trabalho apresentamos algumas reflexões sobre as práticas de letramento digital vivenciadas por uma turma de Educação a Distância usuários do Ambiente Virtual de Aprendizagem – AVA SOLAR da Universidade Federal do Ceará – UFC. Fundamentamos nosso trabalho principalmente nas reflexões de (CASSANY, 2005; ESHET-ALKALAI, 2004; SOARES, 2002; XAVIER, 2002; Buzato, 2001; LÉVY, 1999). Situamos essa investigação como uma pesquisa explicativa de caráter diagnóstico (GIL, 2002) situada no paradigma qualitativo-interpretativista (BORTONI-RICARDO, 2008). Construímos nossa amostra por meio de duas fontes: dois questionários e a análise das atividades do SOLAR. Os resultados apontam que as práticas de letramento digital recorrente nos dados são diversas e estão, principalmente, relacionadas às práticas vernaculares de letramento. Essas práticas estão vinculadas às diferentes agências de letramento com as quais estes participantes estiveram e estão relacionados.Os dados revelam  que ser letrado digital implica assumir mudanças nos modos de abordagem do texto com a utilização e com interação das múltiplas semioses em textos que estão em um suporte digital, no geral, a tela.  Palavras-chave: Letramento digital. Abstract In this work, we make some reflections on the practices of digital literacy experienced by a group of Distance Education users of Virtual Learning Environment - VLE SOLAR, Federal University of Ceará - UFC. We base our work mainly on r83eflections (CASSANY, 2005; Eshet-Alkalai, 2004; SOARES, 2002; XAVIER, 2002; Buzato, 2001; Lévy, 1999). We situate this research as an explanatory research diagnostic character (GIL, 2002) located in the qualitative-interpretative paradigm (BORTONI-RICARDO, 2008). We construct our sample by two sources: two questionnaires and the analysis of the activities of SOLAR. The results show that the practices of recurrent digital literacy in the data are diverse and are primarily related to vernacular literacy practices. These practices are linked to different agencies of literacy with which these participants were and are related. Our data indicate that being literate digital implies taking changes in the modes of approaching the text with the use and interaction of multiple semiosis in texts that are in a digital format, in general the screen. Amidst the process of enrollment growth in Higher Education in Latin America, several inclusion policies that benefit traditionally excluded students stand out. However, academic writing continues to be a challenge for their academic pathways. The objective of this article is to propose an evidence-based conceptual framework on inclusion and writing, aiming to overcome deficit narratives and to vindicate student perspectives. Using a qualitative design, we conducted interviews and surveys with the participants of a national inclusive admissions program in three Chilean universities, which were analyzed using thematic codes and qualitative reliability protocols. The results show a low student appreciation of their varied and frequent vernacular literacy practices and a pervading tension between their identity and linguistic performance in different spaces, within and outside the academia. In addition, self-managed literacy practices, commitment to the task of writing and the possibility of putting one's own perspective into writing appear to be factors of persistence. The article offers evidence-based suggestions on how to operationalize university inclusion in the writing curriculum, based upon the concepts of identity, voice, and agency of students.

The whole world, the Muslim in particular has witnessed conflicts in different areas, which have hindered the developmental efforts of the nations concerned. It should be learned that most victims of these conflicts are women and children. This article attempts to elaborate the role of Muslims Women as a crucial segment in civil society in initiating peace building through nurturing process. It maintains that the adoption of the principles and values derived from the Qur’ān and Sunnah of the Prophet is necessary as a process of lifelong learning.  Those identified values constituted the framework of this article and it adopts the textual analysis method.   This article concludes that through the implementation of those values and frameworks for peace building, women as one of the important segments of civil society are able to play significant role towards initiating peace building and promoting peaceful co-existence in pluralistic society. Abstrak: Dunia Islam khususnya telah menyaksikan konflik di pelbagai daerah yang berbeza. Konflik ini telah menghalang usaha kearah pembangunan Kawasan yang berkenaan. Kebanyakan mangsa konflik ini adalah wanita dan kanak-kanak. Artikel ini cuba untuk menghuraikan peranan wanita Islam sebagai segmen penting dalam masyarakat madani dalam membangun proses kedamaian dengan mendidik dan memupuk prinsip dan nilai murni janaan al-Qur’an. Penggunaan prinsip dan nilai yang dikutip dari ayat-ayat Qur'an dan hadis Rasulullah adalah keperluan yang mendesak sebagai wadah bagi proses pembelajaran sepanjang hayat. Nilai-nilai yang dikenal pasti merupakan rangka kerja artikel ini, dan metod yang dirujuk adalah analisis teks. Artikel ini menyimpulkan bahawa melalui pelaksanaan nilai-nilai dan kerangka kerja Islam bagi proses kedamaian, wanita Islam dalam masyarakat madani mampu memainkan peranan penting dalam memulakan pembinaan keamanan dan menggalakkan kehidupan yang harmonis, sejahtera dan saling bantu membantu dalam masyarakat majmuk.

In this study, we explore linguistic constructions of gender in US sports reportage concerning two related basketball altercations: the Pacers–Pistons NBA fight in 2004 and the Shock–Sparks WNBA fight in 2008. We use a combined corpus and qualitative textual analysis to investigate coverage from the days immediately following the fights and to compare that coverage to sports reportage more generally. Our analysis reveals key differences in narrative focus; for example, that NBA coverage is most interested in blame assignation in the isolated event, while WNBA coverage concerns gender and the league writ large. Such patterns, which are realised linguistically in both explicit and implicit ways, contribute to the ‘othering’ of women and women athletes in the increasingly important sports-media-commercial complex.

This article aims to offer a textual analysis of Rahima and Fahmina’s publications. Rahima and Fahmina are two Non-Government Organizations founded in 2000 by a young generation of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), one of the largest moderate Muslim organizations in Indonesia. There are more similarities than differences between Rahima and Fahmina because the persons involved in the organizations are close friends and, in fact, the same persons even though both are based in two different cities. Since their foundation, both Rahima and Fahmina have published many books and magazines. This article argues that both Rahima dan Fahmina publications offer a new grounded feminist approach to Islam, which counterbalance the dominant male-biased normative approach to Islam in most Muslim societies. These publications are based on their feminist activism and community engagement with the grass-root level of many Nahdlatul Ulama pesantrens (Islamic boarding schools). The topics of their publication cover many current issues such as fiqh of women’s reproductive rights and empowerment, fiqh of the daily life of migrant workers, fiqh of anti-trafficking, prevention of child marriage, violent extremism and religious pluralism. As a result, the progressive nature of their publications negates the existing label of NU as the traditionalist organization.

Este trabalho é um recorte da pesquisa de mestrado e configura-se como um estudo de caso, de abordagem qualitativa. Tem como objetivo analisar uma proposta de ensino para a alfabetização e para o letramento de uma turma de 3º ano do Ensino Fundamental. A proposta, elaborada a partir da obra “Dois Chapéus Vermelhinhos”, escrita por Ronaldo Simões Coelho e ilustrada por Humberto Guimarães, desenvolveu-se no período de quatro dias. As aulas foram observadas, e, como instrumentos de coleta de dados, foi usado o diário de campo, além do registro fotográfico. O referencial teórico que norteia as análises do trabalho se refere aos processos de alfabetização e de letramento. Constatou-se que o livro infantil, com seu potencial textual, pode ser um instrumento significativo para o ensino da leitura e da escrita. Além disso, pode fornecer subsídio para o desenvolvimento de atividades que envolvem gêneros textuais de forma contextualizada. Por fim, compreende-se o livro infantil como uma ferramenta que pode vir a colaborar com os processos de alfabetização e de letramento.

The documentary film Prisoners of Hope (1995) is a heart-rending account of 1 250 former political prisoners in the notorious Robben Island prison in South Africa. The aim of this article is to explore the narratives of Prisoners of Hope and in the process capture its celebratory mood and reveal the contribution that the prisoners made towards the realisation of a free South Africa. The documentary features interviews with Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, Ahmed Kathrada and other former inmates as they recall and recount the atrocities perpetrated by defenders of the apartheid system and debate the future of South Africa with its ‘new’ political dispensation led by blacks. A textual analysis of Prisoners of Hope will enable one to explore the human capacity to resist, commit oneself to a single goal and live beyond the horrors and traumas of an oppressive and dehumanising system.
