The present qualitative, phenomenological study investigated why persons with disabilities turn to specifically snow sports and the role that snow sports play in achieving self-actualization. A content analysis was performed on every available online Team USA Paralympic athlete biography (N = 69) gathering data on general information, prior involvement in sports, type/classification of impairment, year of injury, and rationale for choosing snow sports. Adaptive snow sport organizations across the United States of America were contacted (N = 30) and athletes of these organizations were surveyed regarding the impact that snow sports had on their psychological difficulties. Two narrative interviews were held survey questions to triangulate and to gain real life accounts in a more personal manner. Through researching the question “What role does self-actualization play in the motivation of the persons with physical disability in participating in snow sports?”, it is still fair to say persons with physical disabilities view snow sports as a means of asserting competence and to focus on one’s own ability rather than their disability. Snow sports are, therefore, a viable source of psychological rehabilitation for persons with physical disabilities, like popular sport alternatives such as wheelchair basketball. More research is needed to better observe a cause-and-effect relationship between psychological state of mind and participating in snow sports.

The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the impairment of the body functions on the participation of people with disabilities in sports activities. Material and methods. The study was carried out in the institutions mostly attended by people with severe physical disabilities. The participants took a modified Kenny test and answered the questions of a questionnaire. The study sample consisted of 35 persons with severe physical disabilities. Results. The findings of this study showed that people with disabilities who were not engaged in sports were of much worse opinion about their health condition (P=0.02) and they needed more help from family or friends (P=0.035) compared to the disabled who were not engaged in sports, but in the group of people with disabilities who were engaged in sports, the correlations of those indicators were statistically significant (r=0.59 and r=0.68, respectively). The main motivation of sports participation of people with disabilities (about 80%) was the need for communication and gaining independence. Health improvement was mentioned by less than half of people with disabilities (about 41%) engaged in sports. Conclusions. The syndrome of movement function impairment, duration of impairment, marital status, the age of persons with disabilities, and objectively determined impairment of biosocial self-service functions did not impact sports participation of people with disabilities. However, subjective sensation of pain and the need of medical aid, which did not match the objective functional impairments, could be the obstacle for people with disabilities to participate in sports.

The financial crisis of 2008 has had a greater effect on people with disabilities than on those without disabilities in Spain. In recent years, the number of persons with disabilities registered as part of the labor force and having a higher educational level has increased. However, the unemployment rate among people with disabilities has grown at a faster pace, especially for women and young people. A similar situation has occurred with respect to the annual gross average wage; the gap between those with and without disabilities has increased in the years following the crisis. The present study reveals that Spanish public policies aimed at improving levels of employment for people with disabilities have not achieved the expected results. Here, we explore the possible causes and compare the results with those obtained in the United States.

An analysis of a random sample of the 2930 applications for library books to a private U.S. Foundation from schools having 75% or more of students on free or reduced lunch identifies characteristics of these poorest schools and demonstrates how they would use the newly acquired books in relation to student and collection needs. Results reveal the impact of national and state legislation, the widespread use of the Accelerated Reader System, and the need for bilingual and multicultural books. These libraries appear more focused on improving student achievement test scores than on promoting general information literacy.

The major increase of incarcerated individuals in the United States has led to a variety of issues. The experience of incarceration has an impact on not only the individual but the entire family system. However, the impact on the sibling relationship has yet to be explored in the literature. The current study examined the lived experience of sisters with an incarcerated brother. In this qualitative study, semi-structured interviews with five sisters with an incarcerated brother were conducted. The results displayed five themes that emerged from the interviews: emotional impact, adjustment, prison experience, family impact, and stigma. The results informed clinical implications for marriage and family therapists working within the incarcerated population. In addition, specific suggestions are provided in how to best advocate for this population through research and clinical work. Moreover, the current study punctuates the specific and dire need for therapeutic intervention and broader policy change among many other efforts.

In this phenomenological study, we explored the experiences of 13 working mothers in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to this crisis, mothers in the workforce encountered barriers to their success. Study findings reflect that these challenges have been exacerbated during the pandemic as women experienced increased childcare and other second shift responsibilities. Results highlight participants’ strategies for navigating pandemic-related disruptions. Participants’ experiences further amplify the need for revision of women’s second shift expectations as well as better support for mothers in the workforce.

The relevance of this study is determined by the need for an objective assessment of changes in the socio-economic situation of the population most vulnerable categories, in particular persons with disabilities, during the coronavirus pandemic. The past 2020 was marked by large-scale changes in the daily life of the population, especially its vulnerable categories. People with disabilities have experienced stress not only due to the need for self-isolation, but also due to a decrease in the availability and quality of critical areas of life. The purpose of this work is to formulate proposals aimed at improving social policy in relation to people with disabilities in Russia, taking into account the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. The information base of the work was formed by the results of a sociological survey, demonstrating the changes that have occurred during the coronavirus pandemic in the financial situation of people with disabilities, the availability of health care and social protection services for them, psychological state and behavior. It is shown how much the help of volunteers and distance selling were in demand during this period on the part of the disabled. It was found that disabled people living alone were less likely to notice the impact of the pandemic and the introduced quarantine measures on their lives. Among the answers of the lonely respondents, there was also a large share of negative assessments which showed us that society is not ready for integration, the possibility of an independent life, and the media activities in terms of covering the problems which people with disabilities have. The novelty of the study is in identifying the differentiation of the reaction of people with disabilities to a pandemic situation, depending on the type of disabilities observed in them, as well as on the influence of the living alone factor. It is also substantiated that during the period of self-isolation, distance selling played a compensatory role, reducing the tension of the problem with the inaccessibility of the environment for the disabled. On the basis of empirical data, it was confirmed that the period of the pandemic was associated with a decrease in the accessibility of services in the field of health care and social protection for people with disabilities. In the final part of the study, recommendations were formulated regarding the improvement of the social support existing system for people with disabilities, taking into account the experience of the changes that occurred in the life of the group during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Borowski case first establishes Borowski's status and right to represent the unborn in his action to have the provisions of the Criminal Code concerning abortion declared a violation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The author, Borowski's lawyer, then presents his arguments in favor of the rights of the unborn: Sections 7 and 15 of the Canadian Charter, confirm his rights by guaranteeing the right of “everyone” to “life, liberty and security” and by protecting his against “discrimination based upon mental or physical disabilities”. In spite of the testimonies of the world's outstanding authorities in the fields of perinatology, neonatalogy, embryology, gynecology, neurosurgery and abortion, the Trial court, turning to Section 206 of the Criminal Code, concluded that until a child leaves the body of his or her mother in a living state, he or she is not a human being. Moreover, the unborn is not “someone” encompassed in the word “everyone” of Section 7 of the Charter. English and Canadian jurisprudence is then reviewed by the author. He proceeds to analyze the impact of important decisions rendered in Spain, West-Germany and the United States and examines the consequences of the Morgentaler decision.

Background: In November 2018, the United States withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), known commonly as the Iran nuclear deal, and imposed severe sanctions on Iran. This study explores the impact of US sanctions in Iran’s health research system. Methods: This phenomenological study interviewed 24 Iranian health science scholars through purposeful sampling to learn about their experiences and thoughts regarding the impact of US sanctions on Iran’s health research system. Results: The impact of sanctions on Iran’s health research system were classified into five categories: (a) financial issues, (b) difficulty in supplying laboratory materials and (c) equipment, (d) disruption in international research collaboration and activities, and (e) other issues (e.g., increased stress and workload). Conclusion: This study indicated that since research centers in Iran are highly dependent on governmental budgets, sanctions have greatly affected the health research system in Iran. Financial and economic problems, restrictions in transferring funds, and the disruption in political and international relations have created many challenges for supplying medical laboratory materials and equipment for medical and health research centers in Iran.

This paper presents a study about the psychological state and possibility of reaction of the Jews during the Holocaust. The survivors’ life histories contain expressions that allude to the unintelligible nature of the horrors they endured. We seek to understand the damage to the structure of the psyche revealed in these accounts, given the impact of the violence and trauma experienced, which impairs the apperceptive capacity and the capacity to respond during and after the traumatic experience. In this phenomenological study, structured using the historical–hermeneutical–existential method, we seek to unpick the meaning behind the chains of experiences as well as the difficulty in working through them discursively manifested by the survivors.
