In order to study the mechanical response of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns, several experimental and theoretical studies have been conducted in the last years. However, the influence of thin-walled steel tubes on the axial capacity of these composite columns is not completely stablished, especially when it is combined with high-strength concrete as infill. In this paper, the results of an experimental campaign on 9 concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns subjected to concentric load are presented. Different cross-section shapes are considered in this campaign, i.e. circular, square and rectangular. The influence of the steel tube wall thickness is analysed by including in the tests specimens with thin-walled tubes, whose behaviour needs to be studied in depth given the issues arising when working under compression. The experimental program is designed so the analysis of the results permits to drawn consistent conclusions. For each series, the steel tube thickness is the only geometric parameter modified in order to properly study its effect. Besides, two different concrete strengths were considered for the concrete infill, i.e. normal and high- strength concrete, to observe their effect on the ultimate capacity of the columns. During the tests, the specimens are subjected to axial load and the evolution of the axial displacement with the load is registered. The ultimate capacity of each specimen is obtained and an analysis of the steel tube thickness and concrete strength influence is accomplished. Finally, the study of the dependency of the failure mode on these parameters is carried out.

This article describes an experimental program developed to study the influence of longitudinal prestress on the behaviour of high-strength concrete hollow beams under pure torsion. The pre-cracking, the post-cracking and the ultimate behaviour are analysed. Three tests were carried out on large hollow high-strength concrete beams with similar concrete strength. The variable studied was the level of longitudinal uniform prestress. Some important conclusions on different aspects of the beams’ behaviour are presented. These conclusions, considered important for the design of box bridges, include the influence of the level of prestress in the cracking and ultimate behaviour.

This paper presents an application of high strength concrete to concrete-encased composite frame building based on an experimental program. The work emphasized joints behavior under reverse cyclic loading caused by earthquakes to provide information for seismic design. To investigate the internal mechanisms and seismic performance, cyclic loading tests were carried out on five half-scale interior joints. Two design variables were addressed in the research: concrete strength and axial column load. Frame joints performance including crack pattern, failure mode, deformation, ductility, strain distribution, and energy dissipation capacity was investigated. It was found that all joint specimens behaved in a manner with joint panel shear failure. Using high strength concrete increased the joint strength and had relatively little effect on the stiffness and ductility. The axial column load helped the joint strength by better mobilizing the outer part of the joint, but it had an obvious influence on the ductility and energy-dissipating capacity, which can be improved by providing enough transverse reinforcement. A typical crack pattern was also provided which can well reflect mechanical character and damage process. This research should contribute to the future engineering applications of high strength concrete to concrete-encased composite structure.

This paper presents an experimental study of the separated behavior of short ( L/H=3) high strength concrete-filled rectangular hollow section (RHS) tubes concentrically loaded in compression to failure. A total of 50 specimens were tested. Experimental results showed that the concrete strength influenced the failure pattern of the specimen. The height-to-breadth ratio of the rectangular tube (varying from 1.0 to 1.6) had no evident influence on the ultimate bearing capacity of the specimen. Then based on the experimental results, a numerical separation method was successfully used to separate the compressive load carried by the steel tube and the core concrete. The equivalent One-Dimensional nonlinear stress-strain models of the steel and the confined concrete were suggested, which can be used to determine the overall behavior of the high strength concrete-filled RHS tubes. The stress-strain models have been used to numerically analyze the behavior of high strength concrete-filled RHS tubes. The numerical results are compared with the experimental results and they agreed well with each other.

The ultimate strength of composite columns is a significant factor for engineers and, therefore, finding a trustworthy and quick method to predict it with a good accuracy is very important. In the previous studies, the gene expression programming (GEP), as a new methodology, was trained and tested for a number of concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) samples and a GEP-based equation was proposed to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of the CFST columns. In this study, however, the equation is considered to be validated for its results, and to ensure it is clearly capable of predicting the ultimate bearing capacity of the columns with high-strength concrete. Therefore, 32 samples with high-strength concrete were considered and they were modelled using the finite element method (FEM). The ultimate bearing capacity was obtained by FEM, and was compared with the results achieved from the GEP equation, and both were compared to the respective experimental results. It was evident from the results that the majority of values obtained from GEP were closer to the real experimental data than those obtained from FEM. This demonstrates the accuracy of the predictive equation obtained from GEP for these types of CFST column.

An experimental program was formulated to study moment redistribution in continuous high-strength concrete beams. The evaluation of ductility is important for this type of beam as, for high-strength concrete, the ductility decreases as the concrete strength increases. It is therefore necessary to determine whether the critical sections are able to develop appreciable plastic rotations to justify the application of a linear elastic analysis with moment redistribution. This work specifically examined the influence of the tensile reinforcement ratio and the transverse reinforcement ratio on the rotation capacity of plastic hinges. The moment redistribution obtained experimentally is compared with the guidelines recommended in Eurocode 2, CEB-FIP Model Code 1990, and ACI 318. The results show that ACI 318 recommendations for linear analysis with moment redistribution are too conservative and that the predictions, according to Eurocode 2 and CEB-FIP Model Code 1990, agree with experimental evidence.

In reinforced concrete columns design, P-M interaction diagram is used as axial load control and column bending without taking into account the effect of lateral reinforcement bars. Design principles that ignore the effect of reinforcement bars will result in low value of actual axial capacity of column. This paper presents the effect of lateral reinforcement with a case study of square-sectional columns on high-strength concrete. The equation of unconfined concrete strength enhancement is based on Mander, Legeron, Imran, Antonius and Muguruma models. The reviewed parameters include compressive strength of concrete, reinforcement configuration, and spacings of confinement. The result of the analysis is a comparison of P-M diagram based on confinement models. It shows that confinement significantly influences axial capacity of column, yet it has a certain collapse point at point P = 0 in all models. This is caused by longitudinal reinforcement system. Configuration of reinforcement, spacing and confinement models greatly affects the collapse behavior of column, whether the collapse is classified as compressive collapse or tensile collapse based on the P-M diagram.

Structures located in seismic zones require significant ductility. It is necessary to examine the bond slip characteristics of high strength concrete under cyclic loading. The cyclic bond of high strength concrete is investigated under different parameters, including load history, confining reinforcement, bar diameter, concrete strength, and the rate of pull out. The bond strength, cracking, and deformation are highly dependent on the bond slip behavior between the rebar and the concrete under cyclic loading. The results of cyclic testing indicate that an increase in cyclic displacement will lead to more severe bond damage. The slope of the bond stress – displacement curve can describe the influence of the rate of loading on the bond strength in a cyclic test. Specimens with steel confinement sustained a greater number of cycles than the specimens without steel confinement. It has been found that the maximum bond strength increases with an increase in concrete strength. Cyclic loading does not affect the bond strength of high strength concrete as long as the cyclic slip is less than the maximum slip for monotonic loading. The behavior of high strength concrete under a cyclic load is slightly different from that of normal strength concrete.Key words: bond, high strength, cyclic loading, bar spacing, loading rate, failure mechanism.

In this paper, using ABAQUS, 16 high-strength concrete filled high-strength square steel tube middle-long columns’ axial compression process were simulated. The load-deflection relationships were obtained and the new combination in improving the bearing capacity and plastic deformation has a great advantage. Realization of length variation slenderness ratio by changing the length of column, this paper also study the influence of slenderness ratio, the main parameters of the high-strength concrete filled high-strength square steel tube middle-long column. It is found that both bearing capacity and the plastic capacity are associated with slenderness ratio.
