Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to determine the reason for faculty and staff (N=657; 35 percent males; M age=45.20) at a large Southern university, for either using or not using the free fitness facilities on campus. Design/methodology/approach – Participants identified themselves as either current (n=306), former (n=213), or never-users (n=138) of the facilities, and completed an on-line self-report qualitative questionnaire asking them to describe their reasons for using or not using the campus fitness facilities. Findings – Thematic coding revealed that motives fell into three broad categories for all user types: personal (i.e. cost, location, social support), facility-specific (i.e. quality and amount of equipment, class variety, hours of operation), and motivational climate (i.e. feeling valued, welcomed, best effort was emphasized). Current users highlighted positive aspects of each category whereas former and never users described each category as a barrier to their exercise routines. Practical implications – The identified themes offer campus administration specific suggestions to entice more non-users and former-users to exercise in the fitness facilities available on campus. Originality/value – While researchers have considered barriers to exercise in past studies, the barriers identified were not specific to fitness facilities. The current work not only examines individuals’ reasons for choosing or not choosing a campus fitness facility for their exercise, but also compares the perspectives of former- and never-users to current-users.

Did Americans change following the September 11 terrorist attacks? We provide a tentative answer with respect to the positive traits included in the Values in Action Classification of Strengths and measured with a self-report questionnaire available on-line and completed by 4,817 respondents. When scores for individuals completing the survey in the 2 months immediately after September 11 were compared with scores for those individuals who completed the survey before September 11, seven character strengths showed increases: gratitude, hope, kindness, leadership, love, spirituality, and teamwork. Ten months after September 11, these character strengths were still elevated, although to a somewhat lesser degree than immediately following the attacks.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between positive and negative home-to-work spillover, i.e., home-to-work facilitation (HWF) and home-to-work conflict (HWC) with employability. Moreover, this study also examined whether the relationship between home-to-work spillover and employability varied between academic and support staff employees. Design/methodology/approach An on-line self-report questionnaire was distributed among academic (n=139) and support staff employees (n=215) working at a Dutch university for distance-learning education. Thoroughly validated measures of home-to-work spillover and employability were used. The employability measure consisted of five dimensions: occupational expertise, anticipation and optimization, personal flexibility, corporate sense, and balance. Hypotheses were tested using hierarchical multivariate regression analyses including interaction effects. Findings HWF was positively related to anticipation and optimization only, while HWC appeared to be negatively associated with all employability dimensions. As expected, the relationships between HWF and HWC on the one hand and the specific employability dimensions on the other hand were stronger for support staff employees than for academic staff employees. Originality/value This study has extended research on employability, by focusing on the home context of employees as a possible antecedent. So far, studies have largely ignored the home context of employees, when investigating employability outcomes. Another contribution was the focus on both positive (facilitation) and negative (conflict) spillover from home-to-work, whereas previous studies mainly focused on one type of spillover only. Finally, the authors had the unique opportunity to compare support staff and academic staff employees in one and the same study.

AbstractThis paper presents the results of a study that explored the effectiveness of three intervention strategies in facilitating energy saving behaviour among resident undergraduate university students. In contrast to a dominant practice of motivating with rewards or competition this study sought to appeal to students' intrinsic motivations. An experimental design was used with two intervention groups and a control group. The interventions were the provision of real-time feedback provided by an inhouse energy consumption display unit (ecoMeter) and a targeted social marketing approach. They were evaluated using energy consumption data and self-report data from the participants via an on-line survey and focus groups. Across the three research phases the rate of reduced electricity consumption for the interventions ranged from an average of 17% to 28% less than the control group. The findings provide evidence that facilitation of intrinsically motivated behaviours can result in reduced energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.

Objective: The present research aims to identify the relation between at risk on-line behaviour (as sexting), self-esteem and the influence of media on bodyimage. According to the literature, our hypothesis suggests that on line behavior is influenced by self-esteem and body-image perception. Design and Method: 500 female participants (range 14-25) filled out self-report questionnaires about socio-anagraphical information, health and sexual behaviour (a.e. BMI, contraception, sexual experiences). Italian versions of Sexting Behaviour Scale, Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-3 and Multidimensional Self Concept Scale, Cyberbulliyng Questionnaire were administered too. Results: Our results suggest that there are several differences between female adolescents and young adult women, especially for what concern sexual health and body image perception. Higher scores in the Sexting Behaviour Scale were associated with higher scores in the SATAQ subscales concerning internalization, suggesting that they perceive their body as not in shape as they want it to be. Moreover, we found that having a strong self-esteem was a protective factor from the pressure of TV and Magazines. Conclusions: Our results highlighted the relation between on line and offline sexual health, self-esteem and the influence of media on self-perception. Adolescents should be considered at high risk for development of psychological and health problem related to on line behaviour. Therefore it is extremely important for prevention to focus on intervention in schools to enhance self-efficacy in girls and young women, and to develop specific programs to show the risk of the use of internet.

An analysis of an internationally shared functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data involving healthy participants and schizophrenia patients extracted brain networks involved in listening to radio speech and capture hallucination experiences. A multidimensional analysis technique demonstrated that for radio-speech sound files, a brain network matching known auditory perception networks emerged, and importantly, displayed speech-duration-dependent hemodynamic responses (HDRs), confirming fMRI detection of these speech events. In the hallucination-capture data, although a sensorimotor (response) network emerged, it did not show hallucination-duration-dependent HDRs. We conclude that although fMRI retrieved the brain network involved in generating the motor responses indicating the start and end of an experienced hallucination, the hallucination event itself was not detected. Previous reports on brain networks detected by fMRI during hallucination capture is reviewed in this context.
