The chapter discusses central terms like ‘information’ and ‘order’, and it proposes the concept of ‘engine’ to point toward the infrastructural embeddings that have allowed techniques initially conceived for document retrieval to become pervasive mediators in online environments. While this book constitutes a humanistic exploration of technical substances rather than their practical application, the chapter pays tribute to the fact that the techniques under scrutiny have become prevalent in a specific situation, in this world and not another. To this end, the chapter discusses three critical trends: computerization, information overload, and social diversification.

ABSTRACTMotivationThe rapidly increasing size of biomedical databases such as MEDLINE requires the use of intelligent data mining methods for information extraction and summarization. Existing biomedical text-mining tools have limited capabilities for inferring topological and network relationships between biomedical terms. Very often too much is returned during summarization leading to information overload.ResultsWe present herein SEACOIN 2.0, an interactive knowledge discovery and hypothesis generation tool for biomedical literature.SEACOIN generates k-ary relational networks of biomedical terms using a novel term ranking scheme to facilitate efficient information retrieval, summarization, and visual data exploration. Summarization is presented via multiple dynamic visualization panels. We evaluate the system performance in information retrieval and features extraction using the BioCreative 2013 Track 3 learning corpus. An average F-measure of 94% was achieved for document retrieval and an average precision of 88% was achieved for identification of top co-occurrence terms. The system allows interactive mining of complex implicit and explicit relationships among biomedical entities (genes, chemicals, diseases/disorders, mutations, etc.) and provides a framework for hypothesis generation. SummarySchema therapy (ST) based on the schema mode approach is currently one of the major developments in the treatment of personality disorders (PD). ST is a transdiagnostic approach, but also provides disorder-specific models for most PDs. The mode model gives a clear structure for the development of an individual case conceptualization, in which all current symptoms and interpersonal problems of the patient and the connection with their biographical context can be accommodated. The therapeutic interventions are adapted to the present mode in the specific situation. In addition to cognitive and behavioral techniques there is a special focus on experiential techniques (especially chair dialogues and imagery rescripting) and on specific features of the therapeutic relationship (‘limited reparenting’). This paper provides an overview of the theoretical background and practical application of schema mode-based ST for PDs. An individual case conceptualization and the therapeutic techniques are illustrated with a case example of a patient with histrionic PD.

Among the Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques, control charts are considered to be high weight-age due to their effectiveness in process variation. As the Shewhart’s charts are not that active in monitoring small and moderate process variations, the statisticians have been making efforts to improve the performance of the control chart by introducing several techniques within the tool. These techniques consist of experimenting with different estimators, different sampling selection techniques, and mixed methodologies. The proposed chart is one of the examples of a mixed chart technique that has shown its efficiency in monitoring small variations better than any of the existing techniques in the specific situation of auxiliary information. To show and compare its performance, average run length (ARL) tables and ARL curves have been presented in the article. An industrial example has also been included to show the practical application of the proposed chart in a real scenario.

Oft-decried information overload is a serious problem that negatively impacts the comprehension of information in the digital age. Text summarization is a helpful process that can be used to alleviate this problem. With the aim of seeking a novel method to enhance the performance of multi-document summarization, this study proposes a novel approach to analyze the problem of multi-document summarization based on a mixture model, consisting of a contextual topic model from a Bayesian hierarchical topic modeling family for selecting candidate summary sentences, and a regression model in machine learning for generating the summary. By investigating hierarchical topics and their correlations with respect to the lexical co-occurrences of words, the proposed contextual topic model can determine the relevance of sentences more effectively, recognize latent topics, and arrange them hierarchically. The quantitative evaluation results from a practical application demonstrates that a system implementing this model can significantly improve the performance of summarization and make it comparable to state-of-the-art summarization systems.

For companies that cannot boast about the abundance of resources available for development, it is particularly important to focus their efforts on the optimum use of such resources and to ensure the reliability of change in the development process to counterbalance the potential losses caused by uncertainty and risk. The article explores the theoretical substantiation for the integral management system of processes covered by the concepts of efficiency, reliability and risk of development. Also, it looks at the practical application of the system through the examination of a specific situation by employing analytical possibilities of a stochastic network. It should also be noted that the concepts of efficiency, reliability and risk are used not only in the assessment of the key development processes of a company but also in the deliberation of the real formation of input as well as its transformation into output results. To formulate and solve the management problems of the complex system, a number of methods were used, namely, the stochastic recording of the aims, the existing restrictions and the stochastic optimisation.

Chemistry is often considered a difficult subject, and the way students perceive learning affects their achievements. The research aims to identify: the topics in the secondary Chemistry curriculum perceived as difficult and as interesting by the Bulgarian students, the reasons for students’ difficulties and ways to overcome it. An inquiry was conducted with 321 students aged 16 – 17 years. According to them, the most difficult topics are Organic Chemistry and Chemical calculations (abstract and requiring specific skills). The most interesting topics are Organic Chemistry and Theory of Electrolytic Dissociation. Acids and bases. There is no significant correlation between levels of perceived difficulty and interest. Students relate difficulties to: information overload, emphasis on memorization, and lack of connections to everyday life. More lab activities and the practical application of the knowledge are recommended. Our research results can help improve Chemistry curricula and teaching practice.

Trust in online environments is based on beliefs in the trustworthiness of a trustee, which is composed of three distinct dimensions - integrity, ability, and benevolence. Zimbabwe has slowly adopted Internet of Things for smart agriculture as a way of improving on food security in the country, though there is hesitancy by most farmers citing trust issues as monitoring of crops, animals and farm equipment’s would be done online through connecting several devices and accessing data. Farmers are facing difficulties in trusting that the said technology has the ability to perform as expected in a specific situation or to complete a required task, i.e. if the technology will work consistently and reliably in monitoring the environment, nutrients, temperatures and equipment status. The integrity of the collected data as it will be used for decision making. There is a growing need to determine how trust in the technology influence the adoption of IoT for smart agriculture in Zimbabwe. The mixed methodology was used to gather data from 50 A2 model farmers randomly sampled in Zimbabwe. The findings revealed that McKnight etal. trust in technology model can be used to influence the adoption of IoT through trusting that the technology will be reliable and will operate as expected.Additional constructs such as security and distrust of technology can be used as reference for future research.

In our initial publication on this subject1) we reported results demonstrating that contrast is the most important factor in producing the high image quality required for reliable image analysis. We also listed the factors which enhance contrast in order of the experimentally determined magnitude of their effect. The two most powerful factors affecting image contrast attainable with sheet film are beam intensity and KV. At that time we had only qualitative evidence for the ranking of enhancing factors. Later we carried out the densitometric measurements which led to the results outlined below.Meaningful evaluations of the cause-effect relationships among the considerable number of variables in preparing EM negatives depend on doing things in a systematic way, varying only one parameter at a time. Unless otherwise noted, we adhered to the following procedure evolved during our comprehensive study:Philips EM-300; 30μ objective aperature; magnification 7000- 12000X, exposure time 1 second, anti-contamination device operating.
