SummarySchema therapy (ST) based on the schema mode approach is currently one of the major developments in the treatment of personality disorders (PD). ST is a transdiagnostic approach, but also provides disorder-specific models for most PDs. The mode model gives a clear structure for the development of an individual case conceptualization, in which all current symptoms and interpersonal problems of the patient and the connection with their biographical context can be accommodated. The therapeutic interventions are adapted to the present mode in the specific situation. In addition to cognitive and behavioral techniques there is a special focus on experiential techniques (especially chair dialogues and imagery rescripting) and on specific features of the therapeutic relationship (‘limited reparenting’). This paper provides an overview of the theoretical background and practical application of schema mode-based ST for PDs. An individual case conceptualization and the therapeutic techniques are illustrated with a case example of a patient with histrionic PD.

In this paper, we examine the impact of a massive open online course (MOOC) in the context of outdoor mathematics on the participating teachers’ professional development. We firstly introduce the theoretical background on outdoor mathematics, focusing on math trails with the digital tool MathCityMap and professional development to be accomplished using MOOCs. By taking into account the MOOC “Task Design for Math Trails”, with 93 finalists, we analyze the learning progress of 19 selected case studies from different nations and learning levels by taking into account their answers in a pre- and post-questionnaire and their posts on a specific communication message board, with a special focus on the MOOC’s topics’ task design for outdoor mathematics and the digital tool MathCityMap. The analysis is performed using different quantitative and qualitative approaches. The results show that the teachers studied have benefited from professional development, which is evident in the expansion/evolution of their knowledge from a content, pedagogical, and technological perspective. Finally, we formulate consequences for professional development in STEM education, and conclude the paper with limitations to be drawn and a perspective for further research.

The chapter discusses central terms like ‘information’ and ‘order’, and it proposes the concept of ‘engine’ to point toward the infrastructural embeddings that have allowed techniques initially conceived for document retrieval to become pervasive mediators in online environments. While this book constitutes a humanistic exploration of technical substances rather than their practical application, the chapter pays tribute to the fact that the techniques under scrutiny have become prevalent in a specific situation, in this world and not another. To this end, the chapter discusses three critical trends: computerization, information overload, and social diversification.

Clinicians who work primarily with individual clients and have developed competency with case conceptualizations can provide effective treatment. However, when they work with clients for whom couple and family dynamics are prominent, having an individual case conceptualization can be useful but limited. This chapter discusses the value of adding couple and family case conceptualizations. It describes how to incorporate couple interaction patterns and family interaction patterns in the case conceptualization process. A case example that captured and held national attention for more than 1 year is presented. It illustrates the pattern-focused approach for incorporating individual, couple, and family patterns into a composite case conceptualization.

Two psychotherapy groups of patients with personality disorders were observed for 12 sessions using direct observation techniques. 13 behaviors occurred with differing frequency between the two groups, resulting in a behavioral profile consistent with the diagnostic categories. The study is a first step in an attempt to create a replicable method and data base for measuring behavioral effects of therapeutic interventions.

The extraction of secondary metabolites from plants, and natural sources in general, is a cornerstone in medicinal chemistry and required the development of sustainable extraction techniques. Microwave-Assisted Solid Extraction (MASE) is a promising extractive methodology being more effective than traditional extraction techniques. It offers higher and faster extraction performance ability with less solvent consumption and protection toward thermolabile constituents. For these reasons, MASE resulted in a suitable extractive methodology in all aspects, including economical and practical, compared to traditional extraction techniques, especially over Soxhlet or solid–liquid extraction. In this chapter, a brief theoretical background about the use of microwave energy for extraction has been presented for better understanding. Then, the potential of MASE for the extraction of secondary metabolites from natural resources, for evaluating the plant productivity and for evaluating the quality of the natural matrices will be reviewed. The discussion is supported by reporting recent applicative examples of MASE applied to the extraction of the most representative chemical classes of secondary metabolites, with a special focus on some drugs or compounds of pharmaceutical and nutraceutical interest.

The interest with regard to the Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) has increased in the past few years, because the number of people with the aforementioned diagnosis who use mental health services has risen. The study aimed at examining the defense mechanisms in people with BPD diagnosis in relation to the attachment type they adopt. Thesample consisted of 36 adult subjects diagnosed with BPD who attended psychiatric outpatient departments and 36 people who attended the ophthalmologic outpatient care at a general hospital. The adult attachment questionnaire CA-MIR and the Defense Style Questionnaire-40 were administered to the participants. In general, results are in accordance with the theoretical background, because it was demonstrated that diagnosed subjects scored higher in the insecure attachment types, that is, the ambivalent, the detached and the non-resolved, whereas the non-diagnosed scored higher in the autonomous attachment. Moreover, diagnosed subjects used more than the non-diagnosed participants the neurotic and the immature defenses, but they did not differ with respect to mature defenses. Finally, correlations between attachment and defenses were found with the exception of the mature that correlated with no attachment model. These findings may contribute to the identification of factors that participate in BPD and in the configuration of more efficient therapeutic interventions.

The paper summarizes the methodology of developing relative periodization of archaeological sites based on the data of studies regarding ancient ceramics and results of their practical application to the materials from the Podbolotyevo cemetery of the ancient Muroma. The systemic analysis of shapes of 233 clay pots from 129 graves made it possible to identify five subsequent periods in the history of the cemetery. These reflect changes over time in development of pottery making traditions of the Muroma population that left behind this cemetery. The paper places a special focus on verification of the suggested periodization with the help of independent archaeological data.

Written for clients, this workbook teaches that social anxiety is a normal part of life, but it can sometimes have a negative impact. The important question is not whether someone experiences social anxiety but to what degree and how often. The term social anxiety disorder describes the distress and interference that comes along with severe social anxiety. Information is presented on the nature of social anxiety, empirically supported cognitive–behavioral techniques used to treat it, how to best implement these techniques, and how to deal with the problems that arise during treatment. The attempt is to offer a complete treatment that is informed by individual case conceptualization within an evidence-based practice framework. This third edition includes case examples that represent diverse clients across race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
