The present study discusses the only attempt Radu Stanca made to become a prose writer: „The Black Deck”, posthumous short story published in 1975 in Manuscriptum. The origins of this text, revealed by his correspondence with I. Negoițescu, consist in a double crisis: a personal one (a failed love story with german young woman) and a social one, deriving from the communist regime installed in the late 40’s, which brought him an existential seizure.

The relevance of the article is determined by the researcher of the semantic poetics of Platonov’s story “Potudan River”. We carry out an analytical review of the lifetime criticism and articles of modern researchers about the story, on the basis of which we formulate the purpose of the study, due to the need for a new approach to the interpretation of the work and the identification of the principles of its poetics. The novelty of the article is determined by the identification of the multilayered symbolism of the title of the story, which allows to establish the insufficiency of the conclusions that the content of the “Potudan River” is limited to the family theme. At the level of micropoetics we reveal symbolic details that connect the content of the story with the motive of love for the distant, medical and construction subjects and revealing the planetary scale of the author’s thinking. For the first time, it was established that Platonov’s story “Potudan River” was written based on part of the plot of the novel “Chevengur” – the love story of Alexander Dvanov and Sonya Mandrova. We show that the heroes of the story “Potudan River” Nikita Firsov, Lyuba Kuznetsova and Nikita’s father are doubles of the characters in the novel “Chevengur” by Sasha Dvanov, Sonya Mandrova, and Zakhar Pavlovich. The connection of the image of Lyuba with the archetype of the bride is considered. The paper reveals for the first time the intertextual connections of the story “Potudan River” with the poem “The Bronze Horseman” and the novel in verse “Eugene Onegin” by A. Pushkin, in the texts of which the writer found material for modeling the ordinary fate of the hero. Multi-level connections of the content of the story “Potudan River” with Platonov’s artistic world, which is a complete metatext, are found, which opens up new opportunities for determining the role of the editing technique and the principles of returning to the plots and motives of the works of the 1920s, as well as their transformation in the writer’s work of the 1930s.

The strong and vibrant Russian Old Believer community of Eastern Latvia (Latgalia district) produced many gifted artists, writers, poets and storytellers. Some of them went beyond the traditional topical limitations of Orthodox Christianity and wrote poetry and fiction on non-religious matters, such as love, family relations, history and the like. This research aims to bring to light one particular short story The Forced Love written by a self-madeauthor of Old Believer origin, Maria Pakhomovna Blokhina (1926-2010) to a broader readership. The story has been heavily influenced by Russian folk tales and contains valuable insights of the local ethnography and dialect. This study offers an examination of the story's origins, plot, characters and language and aims to demonstrate the literary and folk heritage of the story, to demonstrate the story’s ethnographic relevance of the period and to examine how the deliberate use of the local dialect by the author reveals her creativity in producing a text close to the style of a folk tale.

This chapter explores how obliquity functions as both a narrative mode and a literary style in the fiction of Elizabeth Bowen. It contends that, for Bowen, confrontations with history and modernity are best handled indirectly and tactfully, to the point that obliquity becomes a signature of her short story style. The early part of the chapter outlines Bowen’s poetics of the short story. Her thinking on the short story is compared with that of her compatriots, Seán O’Faolain and Frank O’Connor, whose stories informed her discussion of ‘national imprint’ in a class on short fiction that she taught at Vassar College in 1960. The latter part of the chapter analyses how Bowen develops an aesthetics of oblique representation of Irish history in her own fiction, with particular reference to ‘Sunday Afternoon’ and ‘A Love Story 1939’, two stories set during the Second World War.

This study is descriptive qualitative study, the focus of discussion is the archetypes of the characters in the short story “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry 1905. This short story represents a love story of a married couple who life in the low economic condition. The main characters are Jim as the husband and Della as the wife. It focuses on the explanation on the characters they have. There are some types of psichologycal study by Carl Jung (1953) that can be used to analyze, but the researcher only choose archetypes with three kinds: Ego, Soul, and Self. The researcher found the characteristics and the types archetypes they have. The most archetypes found is the Lover, it might happens because they are couple and the story tells about their struggle in doing the life together after married. This is also make the reader realize that love does not only come from something luxury, but also from suffering together. The result in this study is archetypes can be found in everytone. This sudy might give and improve the knowledge about artcehtypes for the researcher and readers.

This paper deals with Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s portrayal of the protagonist in his short story “Minutes of Glory”. Wanjiru finds herself trapped in an urban setting and is a victim of her situation and low self-esteem. The story is a poignant and touching study of this young woman who is battling with an identity problem and is seeking acceptance in a post-independence setting where women are exploited by men of the New Africa elite. She is regarded as “a wounded bird in flight: a forced landing now and then but nevertheless wobbling from place to place …” The story affirms female self-realization rather than perpetual self-alienation, and that validates the persistence in attaining her desired goal.

Stephen Sondheim’s 1966 television musicalEvening Primroseis an intriguing snapshot that captures a number of intersecting impulses: Sondheim’s own predilection toward mystery, fantasy, and the macabre; the shifting ground of mid-century popular culture, both in style and medium; and a yearning for the urban pastoral, an escape from the urbanization, mechanization, and alienation of the modern condition, particularly in New York City. Charles is a poet who escapes into a department store; there, he discovers an aging, alternative society that lives in fear of “the Dark Men,” and a young woman, Ella, who was lost in the store as a child and is now entrapped as a servant. Sondheim’s score both reflects the prose of John Collier’s fantastical epistolary short story and foreshadows Sondheim’s own distinctive text-setting and musical-thematic relationships.

In James Joyce's short story, `Eveline', a young woman is thinking about a new life away from an unhappy existence which involves caring for a violent father. In the story, Eveline is to elope with Frank to Buenos Aires, but Eveline fails to join him on the night boat. This story has attracted much critical attention. In particular, commentators have picked up on the faint clues throughout that Eveline is not going to leave her home. It is as though Eveline's subconscious is communicating this while she is consciously reflecting on whether to elope with Frank. But how can such clues be identified in a systematic way whilst responding to the familiar charges made by Stanley Fish that stylistic analysis and interpretation is arbitrary and circular? In this article, I perform a corpus-informed stylistic analysis of `Eveline' in order to reveal some of these subconscious intimations whilst reducing as much as possible arbitrariness and circularity in analysis and interpretation. To do so, I build on formal insights into `Eveline' provided in Michael Stubbs's corpus-informed analysis by proceeding to a more functional exploration of the story.
