This paper deals with Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s portrayal of the protagonist in his short story “Minutes of Glory”. Wanjiru finds herself trapped in an urban setting and is a victim of her situation and low self-esteem. The story is a poignant and touching study of this young woman who is battling with an identity problem and is seeking acceptance in a post-independence setting where women are exploited by men of the New Africa elite. She is regarded as “a wounded bird in flight: a forced landing now and then but nevertheless wobbling from place to place …” The story affirms female self-realization rather than perpetual self-alienation, and that validates the persistence in attaining her desired goal.

The present study discusses the only attempt Radu Stanca made to become a prose writer: „The Black Deck”, posthumous short story published in 1975 in Manuscriptum. The origins of this text, revealed by his correspondence with I. Negoițescu, consist in a double crisis: a personal one (a failed love story with german young woman) and a social one, deriving from the communist regime installed in the late 40’s, which brought him an existential seizure.


Rachel Joyce’s short story collection A Snow Garden and Other Stories (2015) is composed of seven stories which occur during a fortnight of the holiday, Christmas season. The collection uses narrative techniques which make it a unique set of stories. The stories have an urban setting and examine the intricacies of human relationships. The sense of interconnection highlighted by Joyce in the stories elevates it to a short story cycle. A short story cycle consists of individual stories which can stand on their own as complete narratives while also maintaining fictional links running through all the stories. The paper is an attempt to establish A Snow Garden and Other Stories as a short story cycle. It also argues that by narrating the interconnected nature of human lives Joyce’s work is exploring life as a complex system. As a scientific philosophy complexity theory explores the behavior of complex systems including human societies. Complex systems are self-organizing, dynamic, evolving networks that operate without any centralized control, similar to human societies. This paper will apply the principles of complex systems to reveal patterns of human behavior represented in Joyce’s work.

Current research supports the lasting effects of parenting styles on children and adolescents’ self-esteem, and internalizing and externalizing problems. Few studies have examined parenting style, self-esteem, and psychological problems together while considering gender. The current study explored the indirect effect of parenting style though self-esteem on emerging adult psychological problems as moderated by gender among 381 emerging adults. The most notable finding suggested that maternal authoritative parenting was related to higher levels of female self-esteem, which in turn related to lower levels of female psychological problems. Results indicated a relationship between higher levels of self-esteem and lower psychological problems. Findings from the current study contribute to research emphasizing the long-lasting effects of parenting style on emerging adult self-esteem and mental health, particularly among females.

Mary O’Donnell’s short story “The Story of Maria’s Son”, from her collection Storm over Belfast (2008), consciously and openly rewrites Mary Lavin’s story “The Widow’s Son” in the urban setting of contemporary Ireland. O’Donnell follows the steps of a significant figure among Irish women writers and plays with the plot of her source text in a process of expansion, providing background information to weave a realistic pattern of suburban life. However, O’Donnell also engages with the structure, tone and narrative modes of the Lavin original and reproduces the pattern of Lavin’s story in her deliberate use of a double ending, or of alternative endings, thus questioning narrative authority. The purpose of this paper is to analyse Mary O’Donnell’s “The Story of Maria’s Son”, vis-à-vis Lavin’s “The Widow’s Son”, shedding light on the way both texts elaborate conflicting endings and taking into account the variety of narrative voices in both stories. If on the level of plot the tragedy of the loss of the son is generated by a mother-son conflict, on the level of discourse and structure O’Donnell develops the conflicting double endings into a postmodern reflection on the construction of texts.Keywords: rereading; rewriting; alternative ending; Mary O’Donnell; Mary Lavin.

The review article presents data on the features of psychosomatic disorders that contribute to the development of infertility among married couples. Socio-psychological features of reproductive setting of infertile men and women, peculiarities of self-perception and female self esteem in infertile marriages, general identity of women who suffer from infertility, reasons of psychological unreadiness to maternity.The causes of psychological infertility are revealed, which should be search not only from women, but also among men. The importance of psychotherapy in the treatment of this pathology is highlighted. In the general structure of the reproductive sphere, the physiological and psychological components are interrelated. This means that women with a history of infertility have certain psychological problems that complicate the formation of readiness for pregnancy and motherhood. These can be fears, anxieties related to family history, personal experience of a woman, her individual personal qualities or features of the current life situation (relationship with a partner and other loved ones, alternative life values, financial problems), which manifests itself in unconscious resistance , is realized in somatic form. Infertility leads to the negative changes in the structure of woman’s psycho emotional state, self esteem and social well-being of couple and can cause breach in family relationship. That is why it is recommended to pass complex examination, which includes first of all psycho diagnostic of psycho emotional sphere of individual.

Stephen Sondheim’s 1966 television musicalEvening Primroseis an intriguing snapshot that captures a number of intersecting impulses: Sondheim’s own predilection toward mystery, fantasy, and the macabre; the shifting ground of mid-century popular culture, both in style and medium; and a yearning for the urban pastoral, an escape from the urbanization, mechanization, and alienation of the modern condition, particularly in New York City. Charles is a poet who escapes into a department store; there, he discovers an aging, alternative society that lives in fear of “the Dark Men,” and a young woman, Ella, who was lost in the store as a child and is now entrapped as a servant. Sondheim’s score both reflects the prose of John Collier’s fantastical epistolary short story and foreshadows Sondheim’s own distinctive text-setting and musical-thematic relationships.

This research will analyse the use of Instagram from the perspective of uses and gratifications theory. The goal of the study was to know the motives for using Instagram and the role of individual differences in relation to the intrusion of Instagram (understood as an attachment and excessive participation in that social network). An online survey was carried out in which 401 people between 18 and 36 years old (73.1% women) residing in Spain who had an Instagram profile participated. The questionnaire contained several self-report scales to measure the motives for using Instagram, intrusion, and other individual differences measures (self-esteem, social comparison and envy). The results indicated that the main reasons for using Instagram were social interaction, creativity and documentation, and escape and self-promotion were the least relevant motives for our respondents. However, through a multiple linear regression analysis it was observed that the motives that predicted a greater intrusion of Instagram were the search for self-promotion and escape. Finally, it was observed that the orientation towards social comparison and self-esteem were associated with greater intrusion. Our study contributes to the literature on the study of social networks and, in particular, on the predictive factors that explain a more problematic use of Instagram, taking into account motivational variables and individual differences. In this way, our research clarifies the knowledge about the processes underlying the use of Instagram and introduces the concept of intrusion in uses and gratification research. Resumen La presente investigación analiza el uso de Instagram desde la perspectiva de la teoría de los usos y gratificaciones. El objetivo del estudio es conocer los motivos de uso de Instagram y el papel de las diferencias individuales en relación con la intrusión de Instagram (entendida como un apego y una participación excesiva en dicha red social). Para ello, se llevó a cabo una encuesta online en la que participaron 401 personas de entre 18 y 36 años (73,1% mujeres) residentes en España que disponían de perfil en Instagram. El cuestionario diseñado contenía varias escalas para medir los motivos de uso de Instagram, la intrusión y otras medidas de diferencias individuales (autoestima, comparación social y envidia). Los resultados indicaron que las principales razones para utilizar Instagram eran la interacción social, la creatividad y la documentación, siendo los motivos menos representados el escape y la autopromoción. Ahora bien, mediante un análisis de regresión lineal múltiple se observó que los motivos que predecían una mayor intrusión de Instagram eran la búsqueda de la autopromoción y el escape. Finalmente, se observó que la orientación a la comparación social y la autoestima se asociaban a una mayor intrusión. Nuestro estudio contribuye a la bibliografía sobre el estudio de las redes sociales y, en particular, sobre los factores predictores que explican un uso más problemático de Instagram teniendo en cuenta variables motivacionales y de diferencias individuales. De este modo, se esclarece el conocimiento sobre los procesos subyacentes al uso de Instagram y se introduce el concepto de intrusión en la investigación sobre los usos y gratificaciones de las redes sociales.

Contributor Noelle Hedgcock examines the tension the studios create when they market the stars of their prestige pictures—Betty Davis, Joan Crawford, Evelyn Venable, and Joan Fontaine, as "authentically-Victorian" even as the women themselves are demonstrating characteristics of an emerging class of modern women. The studio's mixed strategies result in an ideological strain that underscores the mediated nature of the “New Woman” in mid-twentieth century Hollywood and the United States. Images of the “New Woman” could circulate, but only when set in very specific conditions. Hedgcock's insightful analysis shows the studios allowed the “New Woman” to appear as a rich, young woman in an urban setting, but not in small-town, middle-class, conservative America. In this way, Hedgcock suggests, the studios appeal to the aspirations and anxieties of womanhood found in their audiences, but only if they also left space for their stars to fit the less sophisticated notions of womanhood.

The title of this research is “Shinju in Sonezaki Shinju and Shinju Ten no Amijima, Short Stories by Chikamatsu Monzaemon”. This research aims to examine the background factors of shinju and the author's view of shinju in the Sonezaki Shinju short story and Chikamatsu Monzaemon's Shinju Ten no Amijima short story. The method used in this research is a descriptive analysis method by Ratna (2015). The theory used in this research are the sociological theory of literature proposed by Wellek & Werren (1990), the author's worldview theory proposed by Goldmann in Faruk (2010) and suicide theory proposed by Emile Durkheim (1897). Based on the results of the analysis found three factors underlying the occurrence of the shinju phenomenon in the Sonezaki Shinju short story, such as 1) shinju as a form of rejection of custom marriage, 2) shinju as a way out of conflict between on, giri, and ninjo, and 3) shinju is a form of proof of love, while in Chikamatsu Monzaemon's Shinju Ten no Amijima short story there are three factors underlying the shinju phenomenon, such as 1) shinju as a form of implementation of giri, 2) shinju as a form of shame, and 3) shinju as a form of proof of love. From these factors there are also three authors' views about shinju itself, such as 1)shinju restores self-esteem, 2) shinju to remove shame, and 3) shinju as a union of love.
