PRELIMINARY STUDIES ON RED BELLY TILAPIA COPTODON ZILLII CAUGHT FROM OYAN DAM, OGUN STATE, NIGERIA

The study was carried out on the biological aspect of Redbelly Tilapia, Coptodon zillii collected from Oyan Lake, Abeokuta North Local Government Area, Ogun State, Nigeria, with the aim of contributing to the baseline data for carrying out further studies on its ecology, conservation and development. A total of two hundred and fifty four fish (254) specimens were caught from the Ibaro landing site of the Lake between March and July, 2015. The total length (cm), standard length (cm), head length (cm), body width (cm), body depth (cm), snout length (cm), eye diameter (cm) and body weight (g) were measured. The stomach content was also assessed in order to determine its food and feeding habit. The mean total-length, standard-length, head-length, eye-diameter, snout-length, body-depth, body-width and body-weight during the study were 10.98±0.61cm, 8.56±0.14cm, 2.5±0.08cm, 3.67±0.15cm, 1.52±0.11cm,1.37±0.17cm, 4.05±0.07cm, 34.25±3.02g respectively and their ranges were (4.5-18.7cm), (3.2-15.2cm), (1.1-5.8cm), (2.0-6.8cm), (0.8-3.0cm), (1.1-4.8cm), (1.4-7.3cm) and (6.0-132.0g). A negative allometric (b<3) growth pattern was observed for the stock. The meristic characteristics of C. zillii were (DFR) XIV 10 – XVI 14; PVR, AFR III 8 –III 9; PFR 10 – 13 respectively. Stomach analysis showed that diatoms were the most abundant food items in the diet of C. zillii numerically, 29.98%, while desmids were the most abundant food items in terms of frequency occurrence, 27.82%. This study concluded that C. zillii is not morphometrically and meristically different from the already classified from previous studies. Also, C. zillii thrives well on available plants and detritus.

Morphometric characters and meristic count of a fish, Tor tor (Hamilton Buchanan) have been studied from river Ujh, a tributary of river Ravi in District Kathua, (J&K). Collection of samples on monthly basis was conducted for the study of morphological characters of Tor tor. Present study shows some deviations with respect to few morphometric characters and meristic counts that have been aptly discussed in the following discussion. The positive correlation has been observed between total length and external body parts. The highly strong correlated body parameter in relation to total length is standard length (r = 0.98) and least correlated with eye diameter (r = 0.32) and the highly correlated external body part in relation to standard length is caudal length (r = 0.96) and least correlated part is eye diameter (r = 0.35) and also strong correlation was observed between head length and maximum body depth (r = 0.93) and least correlation between head length and eye diameter (r = 0.23). The correlation analysis shows that all the morphometric characters change proportionally with increase in the total length. These results act as baseline data on morphometry of Tor tor which helps in easy identification and will be beneficial for the development of conservational strategies of the natural stocks of Tor tor in river Ujh, Kathua (J&K).

The morphology of fishes has been the major source of information for taxonomic and evolutionary studies. The present communication deals with the taxonomic analysis of Golden Mahseer- Tor putitora, collected from river Ujh, a tributary of Ravi in District Kathua, (Jammu & Kashmir). The morphological characters are generally divided into two major categories, the morphometric and the meristic. For morphometric studies the parameters considered were: the total length, standard length, head length, pre-dorsal length, pre-ventral length, pre-anal length, caudal length, snout length, eye diameter and maximum body depth. The growth of parameters were studied in relation to three independent variables, i.e., total length, standard length and the head length. Meristic counts of fin rays and fin spines etc. were also studied.

Investigations on the morphometric and meristic characteristics were conducted on grey mullet, Mugil cephalus collected from wetland of Ogun waterside Local government Area, Ogun state, Nigeria. A total number of ninety-one live specimens were caught from the wetland of Ogun waterside Local government Area, for a period of March to June 2012. The fish were immediately preserved on ice in order to slow down rate of decomposition and their total length (TL) (cm), standard length (SL) (cm), head length (HL) (cm), body width (BW) (cm) and body weight (g), were measured fresh within 24 hours. Its sex was also determined by dissecting out the gonads to reveal eggs or testes. The mean values of total length TL, standard length SL, head length HL, body width and body weight for both male and female of M. cephalus for the month of March to June were 18.0±1.1 and for male and 18.6±0.9 for female (M/F), 14.7±1.0 and 14.7±0.6 (M/F), 3.3±0.2 and 3.2±0.1 (M/F), 3.8±0.2 and 3.0±0.5 (M/F), and 52.3±5.5 and 66.7±1.1 (M/F). Gill raker of M. cephalus gave a different result as there was difference between male and female,108 – 138 (male), and 104 and 148 (female).The growth pattern for male species were near isometric with b = 2.53, female species was negative allometric (b = 2.88) and combined sexes was isometric (b = 2.80). Information obtained from the study will contribute to the baseline data for carrying future studies on its ecology and conservation and development.

The morphometric observations were made on total length, standard length, pre-caudal length, head length, eye diameter and depth of body at pectoral fin base of estuarine catfish M. gulio. Males and females showed homogeneity in characters. A linear relationship was found between total length and morphometric characters. Regression of length and weight did not deviate significantly from cube law indicating isometric growth. The fish exhibited sexual dimorphism. The mean values of total length (75.89 ± 13.09 mm), standard length (54.98 ± 7.07 mm), fork length (60.86 ± 9.14 mm), head length (14.75 ± 2.05 mm), snout length (3.79 ± 0.61 mm), pre-dorsal length (31.53 ± 3.18 mm), height of body (20.2 ± 4.11 mm) and total weight (6.62 ± 3.55g) of combined sex of Puntius chola were calculated. Relationships between total length and standard length, fork length, head length, snout length and pre-dorsal length of Puntius chola were found to be linear, positive and highly significant. The length-weight relationship in male, female and combined sex were determined as Log W=-4.510+2.810 Log L, LogW=-4.204+2.685 Log L and Log W=4.465+2.808 Log L respectively. The mean values of condition factor from observed value (ko) of male, female and combined sex were determined as 1.36 ± 0.089, 1.599 ± 0.181 and 1.515 ± 0.192 respectively. The mean values of condition factor from calculated value (kc) of male, female and combined sex were found to be 1.362 ± 0.054, 1.6 ± 0.124 and 1.511 ± 0.075 respectively. The mean values of relative condition factor of male, female and combined sex were registered as 0.999 ± 0.044 , 0.999 ± 0.064 and 0.999 ± 0.112 respectively. Sex ratio was found to be 1:1. A study on morphometrics, meristics sex ratio, ovary condition of Periophthalmodon schlosseri was conducted in 2001. The mean of total length (49.63 + 5.99 mm), standard length (40.84 + 5.30 mm), snout length (4.12 + 0.65 mm), head length (9.86 + 1.39 mm), height of body (6.89+1.24 mm) and the length of caudal peduncle (6.96 + 1.08 mm) were calculated. The length-weight relationship was determined as TW = 0.00004639+2.5882 TL. The fin formula was D1 . 8-9; D2 .1/10-13; P1 . 11-14; P2 . 11-14; A. 1/11. The sex ratio was found to be 1:0.63. The average of ovary length (6.2 +0.84 mm), ovary breadth (3.54 +0.95 mm) and diameter of ova (0.22 +0.04 mm) were also determined. Bangladesh J. Sci. Ind. The investigation was conducted on some aspects of biology viz. morphometrics, meristics, length-weight relationship and coefficient of condition of the Bar-eyed goby Glossogobius giuris. The mean of total length (TL) (94.42 ± 18.52 mm), standard length (SL) (73.13 ± 3.45mm), pre-dorsal length (PDL) (28.8 ± 7.32mm), head length (HL) (23.9 ± 4.87mm), snout length (SnL) (8.15 ± 1.9 mm) and height of body (HB) (14.17 ± 3.29mm) were determined.The relationships between the total length and other body parameters were found to be positively correlated and highly significant. The fin formula is D1.6; D2.1/9-10; P1.17-21; P2.1/5; A.1/9; C.17. The length-weight relationships of combined sex of G. giuris were determined as Log TW = -4.802 + 2.857 Log TL. The coefficient of conditions from the ko of combined sex and from the kc of combined sex was determined as 0.834 ± 0.132 and 0.827 ± 0.027, respectively. We resolve the identity of the glass catfish, a species of Asian freshwater fish commonly encountered as an ornamental fish and an experimental subject that has long been misidentified as either Kryptopterus bicirrhis or K. minor. Our study indicates that the glass catfish is an unnamed species distinct from either, which we describe here as Kryptopterus vitreolus. Kryptopterus vitreolus is known from river drainages in peninsular and southeastern Thailand, and is distinguished from congeners in having a combination of: transparent body in life, maxillary barbels reaching beyond the base of the first anal-fin, dorsal profile with a pronounced nuchal concavity, snout length 29–35% head length (HL), eye diameter 28–34% HL, slender body (depth at anus 16–20% standard length (SL)) and caudal peduncle (depth 4–7% SL), 14–18 rakers on the first gill arch, and 48–55 anal-fin rays.

The aim of the present study was to characterize the relationships that occur between morphometric variables of larvae of Lophiosilurus alexandri Steindachner, 1876 through their allometric growth analysis. Total length, head length and body height were correlated with standard length, head height and body height, as well as eye diameter and head height with head length. The results revealed allometric positive relation during the initial development, where the b coefficient varied between 1.10 and 2.81. The variable pre-anal distance in relation to the standard length and the snout length in relation to the head length revealed an allometric negative relation, where the b coefficient was 0.85 and 0.94, respectively.

We describe a new species of pimelodid catfish of the genus Iheringichthys from the upper Paraná basin, Brazil. Iheringichthys syi n. sp. is distinguished by the comparatively fine serration along the anterior margin of the pectoral-fin spine, an adpressed dorsal-fin remote from the adipose-fin origin, a large eye (23.2-31.2% of head length), narrow interorbital (16.2-23.0% of head length), long snout (42.0-51.0% of head length), long postorbital length (30.6-34.0% of head length), low adipose fin (4.8-7.8% of standard length), eye diameter 97.0-140.0% of interorbital length, and body with numerous, small dots irregularly scattered on flanks, especially marked on anterior half of flank.
