Morphometric characters and meristic count of a fish, Tor tor (Hamilton Buchanan) have been studied from river Ujh, a tributary of river Ravi in District Kathua, (J&K). Collection of samples on monthly basis was conducted for the study of morphological characters of Tor tor. Present study shows some deviations with respect to few morphometric characters and meristic counts that have been aptly discussed in the following discussion. The positive correlation has been observed between total length and external body parts. The highly strong correlated body parameter in relation to total length is standard length (r = 0.98) and least correlated with eye diameter (r = 0.32) and the highly correlated external body part in relation to standard length is caudal length (r = 0.96) and least correlated part is eye diameter (r = 0.35) and also strong correlation was observed between head length and maximum body depth (r = 0.93) and least correlation between head length and eye diameter (r = 0.23). The correlation analysis shows that all the morphometric characters change proportionally with increase in the total length. These results act as baseline data on morphometry of Tor tor which helps in easy identification and will be beneficial for the development of conservational strategies of the natural stocks of Tor tor in river Ujh, Kathua (J&K).

The morphometric observations were made on total length, standard length, pre-caudal length, head length, eye diameter and depth of body at pectoral fin base of estuarine catfish M. gulio. Males and females showed homogeneity in characters. A linear relationship was found between total length and morphometric characters. Regression of length and weight did not deviate significantly from cube law indicating isometric growth. The fish exhibited sexual dimorphism. The morphology of fishes has been the major source of information for taxonomic and evolutionary studies. The present communication deals with the taxonomic analysis of Golden Mahseer- Tor putitora, collected from river Ujh, a tributary of Ravi in District Kathua, (Jammu & Kashmir). The morphological characters are generally divided into two major categories, the morphometric and the meristic. For morphometric studies the parameters considered were: the total length, standard length, head length, pre-dorsal length, pre-ventral length, pre-anal length, caudal length, snout length, eye diameter and maximum body depth. The growth of parameters were studied in relation to three independent variables, i.e., total length, standard length and the head length. Meristic counts of fin rays and fin spines etc. were also studied.

The study was carried out on the biological aspect of Redbelly Tilapia, Coptodon zillii collected from Oyan Lake, Abeokuta North Local Government Area, Ogun State, Nigeria, with the aim of contributing to the baseline data for carrying out further studies on its ecology, conservation and development. A total of two hundred and fifty four fish (254) specimens were caught from the Ibaro landing site of the Lake between March and July, 2015. The total length (cm), standard length (cm), head length (cm), body width (cm), body depth (cm), snout length (cm), eye diameter (cm) and body weight (g) were measured. The stomach content was also assessed in order to determine its food and feeding habit. The mean total-length, standard-length, head-length, eye-diameter, snout-length, body-depth, body-width and body-weight during the study were 10.98±0.61cm, 8.56±0.14cm, 2.5±0.08cm, 3.67±0.15cm, 1.52±0.11cm,1.37±0.17cm, 4.05±0.07cm, 34.25±3.02g respectively and their ranges were (4.5-18.7cm), (3.2-15.2cm), (1.1-5.8cm), (2.0-6.8cm), (0.8-3.0cm), (1.1-4.8cm), (1.4-7.3cm) and (6.0-132.0g). A negative allometric (b<3) growth pattern was observed for the stock. The meristic characteristics of C. zillii were (DFR) XIV 10 – XVI 14; PVR, AFR III 8 –III 9; PFR 10 – 13 respectively. Stomach analysis showed that diatoms were the most abundant food items in the diet of C. zillii numerically, 29.98%, while desmids were the most abundant food items in terms of frequency occurrence, 27.82%. This study concluded that C. zillii is not morphometrically and meristically different from the already classified from previous studies. Also, C. zillii thrives well on available plants and detritus.

Study of morphometric characters is generally carried out for species identification in fish biology. It includes the measurements of all body lengths and their inter relationships in terms of ratios and percentages to the independent lengths (Total length, standard length and head length). Present paper deals with the analysis of various morphometric characters with species characteristics in Mastacembelus armatus (Lacepede),  which is one of the most important eel like hillstream fish belonging to order Mastacembeliformes and family Mastacembelidae from river Western Nayar (290 45’ to 300 15’ latitude and 780 34’ to 790 12’ longitude ). Total length, standard length and head lengths were considered as an independent variables in ratio of which other lengths (caudal length, pre orbital length, post orbital length, maximum body depth, snout length and eye diameter) were analysed. The maximum size of fish was observed as 60 cm and the minimum being 10 cm. By using regression and correlation analysis, the modelling of data is presented to find out their interrelationship. The closest correlation was in between total length and standard length (r= 0.999) and the farthest between total length and caudal length ( r= 0.878). The linearity of regression was tested by the analysis of variance (ANOVA) which showed that all the relationships were significant at the level of 5 % significance. The multivariate analysis was also done by using cluster technique which sowed except caudal length rest all characters were forming a close cluster.

Different morphometric characters such as total length (TL), standard length (SL), head length (HL), eye diameter (ED), body depth (BD), pre-orbital length (POL) were measured on Glossogobius giuris collected from Mithamoin haor showed that percentage growth value of SL, BD, HL, ED and POL were higher in female. A linear relationship was found between total length and morphometric characters and these also showed significant positive correlation (p<0.001) between dependent and independent variables. The length-weight relationships of G. giuris were calculated for males, females. The relationship was analyzed using the formula W=aLb after transform into straight-line equitation. The equation obtained for male was; Log W = 2.757 Log TL – 1.757; for female; Log W = 2.843 Log TL – 1.868. The regression coefficients (b) between males and females did not show any significant difference (p>0.05) while b value significantly deviated from the expected cube value of 3 in case of male only thus indicating negative allometry. However, relative condition factor (Kn) of G. giuris computed for female was 1.009 ± 0.124 and for male was 1.016 ± 0.199, which suggest the specimen were healthy and in good condition. We resolve the identity of the glass catfish, a species of Asian freshwater fish commonly encountered as an ornamental fish and an experimental subject that has long been misidentified as either Kryptopterus bicirrhis or K. minor. Our study indicates that the glass catfish is an unnamed species distinct from either, which we describe here as Kryptopterus vitreolus. Kryptopterus vitreolus is known from river drainages in peninsular and southeastern Thailand, and is distinguished from congeners in having a combination of: transparent body in life, maxillary barbels reaching beyond the base of the first anal-fin, dorsal profile with a pronounced nuchal concavity, snout length 29–35% head length (HL), eye diameter 28–34% HL, slender body (depth at anus 16–20% standard length (SL)) and caudal peduncle (depth 4–7% SL), 14–18 rakers on the first gill arch, and 48–55 anal-fin rays.

The aim of the present study was to characterize the relationships that occur between morphometric variables of larvae of Lophiosilurus alexandri Steindachner, 1876 through their allometric growth analysis. Total length, head length and body height were correlated with standard length, head height and body height, as well as eye diameter and head height with head length. The results revealed allometric positive relation during the initial development, where the b coefficient varied between 1.10 and 2.81. The variable pre-anal distance in relation to the standard length and the snout length in relation to the head length revealed an allometric negative relation, where the b coefficient was 0.85 and 0.94, respectively.

We describe a new species of pimelodid catfish of the genus Iheringichthys from the upper Paraná basin, Brazil. Iheringichthys syi n. sp. is distinguished by the comparatively fine serration along the anterior margin of the pectoral-fin spine, an adpressed dorsal-fin remote from the adipose-fin origin, a large eye (23.2-31.2% of head length), narrow interorbital (16.2-23.0% of head length), long snout (42.0-51.0% of head length), long postorbital length (30.6-34.0% of head length), low adipose fin (4.8-7.8% of standard length), eye diameter 97.0-140.0% of interorbital length, and body with numerous, small dots irregularly scattered on flanks, especially marked on anterior half of flank.

A total of 65 specimens of Rhinomugil corsula (Hamilton, 1822), measuring from 8.1 cm to 28.9 cm in total length, collected from the Sitakunda coast of the Bay of Bengal, were used for the morphometric analysis during the period between March 2016 and February 2018. Twenty seven morphometric characters were selected and studied during the investigation period. The regression equations – both arithmetic and logarithmic – between the total length (TL) and 21 morphometric characters, and head length (HL) with five morphometric characters related to the head, were determined. The value of coefficient of correlation ‘r’ for each relationship was calculated and t-test for each ‘r’ value was also done. The relationships of the various measurements of the body with the total length – and head length with the five relevant characters -of R. corsula from the Sitakunda coast of the Bay of Bengal showed linear relationships, which were highly significant (P<0.01). The ranges of ‘b’ values 0.967 to 1.346 in case of the relationships between TL and 21 relevant characters, whereas 0.906 to 1.236 in case of the relationships between HL and 5 relevant characters. These values differ insignificantly (P>0.01) with typical value b=1 indicating isometric relationships among the characters. Bangladesh J. Zool. 49 (2): 229-241, 2021

Batasio convexirostrum, a new bagrid catfish, is described from the Koladyne drainage, Mizoram, India. It is distinguished from congeners by a combination of the following characters: body with a dark-brown oblique predorsal bar on a uniform light-brown background; very short dorsal to adipose distance (1.7–4.1% SL); snout length 39.2–45.5% head length; eye diameter 24.6–29.8% head length; gill rakers on the first branchial arch 4–5; pectoral spine length 14.6–17.6% standard length; adipose-fin base length 31.0–34.9% standard length; post-adipose distance 10.6–13.7% standard length; branched pectoral fin rays 9–10; and 39–40 vertebrae.
