Guiding Sustainable Development along Rivers in India

<p>Rivers have been a crucial part of human existence and the cradle of ancient civilizations. Historically, all cities developed along river banks. Rivers have played a seminal role in structuring cities the world over. India is recognized as a river nation and has had a long history of mystical affiliation with its rivers. Here rivers are considered sacred and venerated. All human activities and rituals are innately associated with the riverfront. Riverfronts have functioned as crucial socio-cultural religious spaces. In today’s times however Rivers present a gory picture of neglect. Fresh water is polluted by domestic, industrial, agricultural and religious waste. Fortunately, people  over the world have begun to realize the importance of rivers and concentrated efforts to ecologically rehabilitate and restore them are underway. In India, such efforts are mostly hinged on channelizing the riverbank and providing a space for recreation for city dwellers. Activists and water proponents, however, contest this approach and term it to be a mere initiative focussed towards river beautification rather than river rehabilitation. Such initiatives are not necessarily ecologically responsive and sustainable. India has been one of the leading participants of the United Nations and is dedicated to the UN's 2015 sustainable development goals (SDGs). Under SDG 6 and SDG 11, India strives to boost its water bodies, water quality and provide a comprehensive sustainable solution. India initiated the Smart City Projects (SCP's) in 2015, focussing on cities ' overall sustainable development'. Under this project, a total of 100 cities have been identified and more than 60 cities have a plan for riverfront development. These initiatives are targeted at reducing water pollution, providing aid to the riverbank and improving the connect between the city and its river. This paper aims at reviewing the recent Riverfront development proposals in India under the smart city mission and develop a set of indicators as a framework that allows future communities to reclaim their river and river edges in a sustainable manner. Research is conducted in two stages. Phase one is to establish a framework based on the principles of urban design and urban planning policies in India and assess the planned riverfront project. Phase two suggests a multi-criterion sustainability framework in the context of Indian rivers and validate its application using the community discussion process. Discussions involve Indian government officials’ scholars from a variety of disciplines, engineers, designers, and the general public. This framework aims to direct developers, architects, PWDs, environmental authorities, towards sustainable restoration/rehabilitation strategies in the context of Indian rivers. </p><p>Keywords: Riverfront development, River Rehabilitation, River Restoration, Sustainability, Channelization, Smart City Projects</p>

The proposed study aims at documenting the potential and need of developing Smart cities in India, to understand smart city principles and various dimensions of smart city adopted in various parts of the world which will further help in deriving recommendations and lessons for India's future smart cities. The objective of this study is to generate learning and exploration that will improve confidence in civic authorities, experts, city planners, developers; and help stimulate further private sector investment in developing Smart cities of India.

The chapter argues that whether or not the world is successful in attaining sustainability, political systems are in a process of epoch-defining change as a result of the unsustainable demands of our social systems. This chapter theorizes a framework for analyzing the political “translation” of sustainability norms within national polities. Translation, in this sense, denotes the political reinterpretation of sustainable development as well as the national capacities and contexts which impact how sustainability agendas can be instrumentalized. This requires an examination into the political architecture of a national polity, the norms that inform a political process, socioecological contexts, the main communicative channels involved in the dissemination of political discourse and other key structures and agencies, and the kinds of approaches toward sustainability that inform the political process. This framework aims to draw attention to the ways in which global economic, political, and social systems are adapting and transforming as a result of unsustainability and to further understanding of the effectiveness of globally diffused sustainability norms in directing that change.

The concept of Sustainable development underlines the long lasting development of an economy by an efficient resource use fulfilling the economic, social and environmental aspects together. The SDGs by the UNDP focus  on 17 goals for all countries to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.The mission of Smart Cities in India is to promote cities that provide core infrastructure and give a decent quality of life to its citizens, a clean and sustainable environment and application of ‘Smart’ Solutions. The focus is on sustainable and inclusive development of the Mega cities, an indispensable outcome of the development process and urbanization implied in it. During the course of economic development over last 70 years in India, many cities have emerged as unsustainable and highly vulnerable to manmade calamities.This paper would elaborate on the details of Smart city project in India in the light of Sustainable development. The Smart cities mission though aims at sustainable development, this path is full of challenges along with some opportunities in disguise. La educación ambiental es un reto y una realidad que debemos incluir en los centros educativos de todo el mundo.  A partir de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible 2030 (ODS) lanzado por Naciones Unidas, nos planteamos la necesidad de actuar contra el calentamiento global, el cambio climático y en general cambiar para mejorar nuestros hábitos, tanto sociales, como personales. Vimos que este cambio tan necesario y urgente en nuestro modo de vida lo podríamos acercar a los más jóvenes a través del juego. Para ello se buscó una metodología práctica para trabajar a través del juego y de la tecnología los conceptos necesarios para el cuidado del medio ambiente. Con esta gamificación buscamos motivar al alumnado para iniciar este cambio de estilo de vida de una forma divertida y en equipo sin olvidar el objetivo de alcanzar la mayoría de las metas propuestas. La utilización del juego como instrumento de aprendizaje favorece la participación e implicación del alumnado y ayuda a la cohesión de los equipos. Retos de lógica, artísticos, de cuidado de medio ambiente, talleres de igualdad han convivido con las materias habituales durante este curso. La completa participación de profesorado y alumnado ha hecho que este reto educativo se haya convertido en una realidad extrapolable a otros cursos e incluso a otros centros que deseen incorporarlo. Environmental education is a challenge and a reality that we must include in educational centers around the world. Based on the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) launched by the United Nations, we consider the need to act against global warming, climate change and in general change to improve our habits, both social and personal. We saw that this so necessary and urgent change in our way of life could be brought closer to the youngest through the game. For this, a practical methodology was sought to work through games and technology the concepts necessary for caring for the environment. With this gamification we seek to motivate students to start this lifestyle chango in a fun way and as a team without forgetting the objective of achieving most of the proposed goals. The use of the game as a learning instrument favors the participation and involvement of the students and helps the cohesion of the teams. Challenges of logic, art, care of the environment, equality workshops have coexisted with the usual subjects during this course. The full participation of teachers and students has made this educational challenge a reality that can be extrapolated to other courses and even to other centers that wish to incorporate it.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the inclusion of the Republic of Belarus in the processes of achieving the goals of sustainable development adopted by the world community. Environmental marketing is seen as a tool to achieve sustainable development goals in the area of responsible consumption. The essence of environmental marketing at the level of organizations and at the state level is determined. Directions for the development of environmental marketing in the Republic of Belarus have been identified in order to reduce the volume of non-decomposable waste and waste that cannot be recycled, including due to improper collection.

The  The World Environment Conference in Stockholm in 1972 became clear evidence that environmental problems began to be a concern of various countries around the world, including Indonesia. Humans can not continue to exploit environment for resources and landfills. Environmental project management includes sustainable development aimed at improving the welfare of the community, conserving available natural resources, and ensuring the sustainability of the life of the surrounding environment. This concept is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals which are peace and prosperity for humans and earth, for now and in the future. Indonesia is not the only country that cares about the environment in accordance with the goals of the SGDs. Philippines divides project-affected communities into direct and indirect affected communities. United Kingdom has The European Union (EU) biodiversity strategy which aims to maintain and restore ecosystems. Denmark has The Innovation Network for Environmental Technology (Inno-MT) which is a partnership that supports projects related to waste, air, water and soil. This study aims to understand the principles of sustainable development related to environmental project management and its implementation in Indonesia. In addition, the researcher lists the actions taken by other countries regarding environmental project management to get a wider perspective.   Konferensi Lingkungan Hidup Sedunia di Stockholm tahun 1972 menjadi bukti nyata permasalahan lingkungan mulai menjadi perhatian dari berbagai negara di seluruh dunia, termasuk Indonesia. Manusia tidak dapat terus mengeksploitasi lingkungan untuk sumber daya dan tempat pembuangan limbah. Manajemen proyek lingkungan mencakup pembangunan  berkelanjutan yang bertujuan meningkatkan kesejahteraan  masyarakat,  melestarikan  sumber daya alam  yang tersedia, dan  menjamin   keberlangsungan   kehidupan   lingkungan   disekitarnya. Konsep ini sejalan dengan tujuan Sustainable Development Goals yaitu perdamaian dan kemakmuran bagi manusia dan bumi, baik saat ini maupun di masa mendatang. Indonesia bukan satu-satunya negara yang peduli mengenai lingkungan sesuai dengan tujuan SGDs. Negara-negara yang menandatangani PBB juga melakukan hal yang sama. Filipina membagi masyarakat terdampak proyek menjadi masyarakat terkena dampak langsung dan tidak langsung.  Inggris memiliki The Eurpean Union (EU) biodiversity strategy yang bertujuan untuk mempertahankan dan memulihkan ekosistem. Denmark memiliki The Innovation Network for Environmental Technology (Inno-MT) yaitu kemitraan yang mendukung proyek yang berhubungan dengan limbah, udara, air dan tanah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk  memahami prinsip-prinsip yang digunakan  dalam rangka pembangunan berkelanjutan yang berkaitan dengan manajemen proyek lingkungan dan pengimplementasiannya di Indonesia. Selain itu, peneliti mencantumkan tindakan-tindakan yang dilakukan oleh negara lain terkait manajemen proyek lingkungan untuk mendapatkan sudut pandang yang lebih luas

This chapter lays out a research agenda to assess conditions, challenges, and prospects for the Sustainable Development Goals to pursue this aim. First, the chapter discusses goal setting as a global governance strategy. Second, to contextualize the Sustainable Development Goals, it discusses the unique nature of the modern challenges that the Sustainable Development Goals must confront and review the historical and political trajectory of sustainable development governance, including the evolution from a primarily rule-based to a more goal-based system and the experience of the earlier Millennium Development Goals. Third, the chapter reviews the negotiating history of the Sustainable Development Goals. Then, the chapter elaborate on how the chapters are organized to address the three questions that guide the book.

This multi-faceted case study investigates sustainable land development using permaculture as the design tool. Permaculture, coined by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, is a sustainable design theory that builds off three ethical principles used to produce a set of guidelines to follow in order to create an ecologically focused project. Permaculture, a contraction of perma-nent and initially agri-culture, has evolved to perma-nent and culture, understanding that without agriculture, culture is impossible. This chapter begins with an overview of the environmental issues followed by a description and brief history of sustainable development, with emphasis placed on the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The focus will be a three-part case study examining different scales (urban, suburban, and rural) of permaculture land development in the midwestern United States (U.S.). These permaculture designs will illustrate how SDGs can be achieved to forge a sustainable future.
