Using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for the purposes of conducting high-accuracy aerial surveying has become a hot topic over the last year. One of the most promising means of conducting such a survey involves integrating a high-resolution non-metric digital camera with the UAV and using the principals of digital photogrammetry to produce high-density colorized point clouds. Through the use of stereo imagery, precise and accurate horizontal positioning information can be produced without the need for integration with any type of inertial navigation system (INS). Of course, some form of ground control is needed to achieve this result. Terrestrial LiDAR, either static or mobile, provides the solution. Points extracted from Terrestrial LiDAR can be used as control in the digital photogrammetry solution required by the UAV. In return, the UAV is an affordable solution for filling in the shadows and occlusions typically experienced by Terrestrial LiDAR. In this paper, the accuracies of points derived from a commercially available UAV solution will be examined and compared to the accuracies achievable by a commercially available LIDAR solution. It was found that the LiDAR system produced a point cloud that was twice as accurate as the point cloud produced by the UAV’s photogrammetric solution. Both solutions gave results within a few centimetres of the control field. In addition the about of planar dispersion on the vertical wall surfaces in the UAV point cloud was found to be multiple times greater than that from the horizontal ground based UAV points or the LiDAR data.

Ancient pagodas are usually parts of hot tourist spots in many oriental countries due to their unique historical backgrounds. They are usually polygonal structures comprised by multiple floors, which are separated by eaves. In this paper, we propose a new method to investigate both the rotational and reflectional symmetry of such polygonal pagodas through developing novel geometric models to fit to the 3D point clouds obtained from photogrammetric reconstruction. The geometric model consists of multiple polygonal pyramid/prism models but has a common central axis. The method was verified by four datasets collected by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and a hand-held digital camera. The results indicate that the models fit accurately to the pagodas’ point clouds. The symmetry was realized by rotating and reflecting the pagodas’ point clouds after a complete leveling of the point cloud was achieved using the estimated central axes. The results show that there are RMSEs of 5.04 cm and 5.20 cm deviated from the perfect (theoretical) rotational and reflectional symmetries, respectively. This concludes that the examined pagodas are highly symmetric, both rotationally and reflectionally. The concept presented in the paper not only work for polygonal pagodas, but it can also be readily transformed and implemented for other applications for other pagoda-like objects such as transmission towers.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> A small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with survey-grade GNSS positioning is used to produce a point cloud for topographic mapping and 3D reconstruction. The objective of this study is to assess the accuracy of a UAV imagery-derived point cloud by comparing a point cloud generated by terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). Imagery was collected over a 320&amp;thinsp;m by 320&amp;thinsp;m area with undulating terrain, containing 80 ground control points. A SenseFly eBee Plus fixed-wing platform with PPK positioning with a 10.6&amp;thinsp;mm focal length and a 20&amp;thinsp;MP digital camera was used to fly the area. Pix4Dmapper, a computer vision based commercial software, was used to process a photogrammetric block, constrained by 5 GCPs while obtaining cm-level RMSE based on the remaining 75 checkpoints. Based on results of automatic aerial triangulation, a point cloud and digital surface model (DSM) (2.5&amp;thinsp;cm/pixel) are generated and their accuracy assessed. A bias less than 1 pixel was observed in elevations from the UAV DSM at the checkpoints. 31 registered TLS scans made up a point cloud of the same area with an observed horizontal root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.006m, and negligible vertical RMSE. Comparisons were made between fitted planes of extracted roof features of 2 buildings and centreline profile comparison of a road in both UAV and TLS point clouds. Comparisons showed an average +8&amp;thinsp;cm bias with UAV point cloud computing too high in two features. No bias was observed in the roof features of the southernmost building.</p>

However, due to limited carrying capacity of a UAV, sensors integrated in the ULS should be small and lightweight, which results in decrease in the density of the collected scanning points. This affects registration between image data and point cloud data. To address this issue, the authors propose a method for registering and fusing ULS sequence images and laser point clouds, wherein they convert the problem of registering point cloud data and image data into a problem of matching feature points between the two images. First, a point cloud is selected to produce an intensity image. Subsequently, the corresponding feature points of the intensity image and the optical image are matched, and exterior orientation parameters are solved using a collinear equation based on image position and orientation. Finally, the sequence images are fused with the laser point cloud, based on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) time index of the optical image, to generate a true color point cloud. The experimental results show the higher registration accuracy and fusion speed of the proposed method, thereby demonstrating its accuracy and effectiveness.

Analysis of two small semi-mountainous catchments in central Evia island, Greece, highlights the advantages of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) based change detection methods. We use point clouds derived by both methods in two sites (S1 & S2), to analyse the effects of a recent wildfire on soil erosion. Results indicate that topsoil’s movements in the order of a few centimetres, occurring within a few months, can be estimated. Erosion at S2 is precisely delineated by both methods, yielding a mean value of 1.5 cm within four months. At S1, UAV-derived point clouds’ comparison quantifies annual soil erosion more accurately, showing a maximum annual erosion rate of 48 cm. UAV-derived point clouds appear to be more accurate for channel erosion display and measurement, while the slope wash is more precisely estimated using TLS. Analysis of Point Cloud time series is a reliable and fast process for soil erosion assessment, especially in rapidly changing environments with difficult access for direct measurement methods. This study will contribute to proper georesource management by defining the best-suited methodology for soil erosion assessment after a wildfire in Mediterranean environments.

The understanding of the effects of error on Mobile Terrestrial LiDAR (MTL) point clouds has not increased with their popularity. In this study, comprehensive error analyses based on error propagation theory and global sensitivity study were carried out to quantitatively describe the effects of various error sources in a MTL system on the point cloud. Two scenarios were envisioned; the first using the uncertainties for measurement and calibration variables that are normally expected for MTL systems as they exist today, and the second using an ideal situation where measurement and calibration values have been well adjusted. It was found that the highest proportion of error in the point cloud can be attributed to the boresight and lever arm parameters for MTL systems calibrated using non-rigours methods. In particular, under a loosely controlled error condition, the LiDAR to INS Z lever arm and the LiDAR to INS roll angle contributed more error in the output point cloud than any other parameter, including the INS position. Under tightly controlled error conditions, the INS position became the dominant source of error in the point cloud. In addition, conditional variance analysis has shown that the majority of the error in a point cloud can be attributed to the individual variables. Errors caused by the interactions between the diverse variables are minimal and can be regarded as insignificant.

3D terrain models are an important instrument in areas like geology, agriculture and reconnaissance. Using an automated UAS with a line-based LiDAR can create terrain models fast and easily even from large areas. But the resulting point cloud may contain holes and therefore be incomplete. This might happen due to occlusions, a missed flight route due to wind or simply as a result of changes in the ground height which would alter the swath of the LiDAR system. This paper proposes a method to detect holes in 3D point clouds generated during the flight and adjust the course in order to close them. First, a grid-based search for holes in the horizontal ground plane is performed. Then a check for vertical holes mainly created by buildings walls is done. Due to occlusions and steep LiDAR angles, closing the vertical gaps may be difficult or even impossible. Therefore, the current approach deals with holes in the ground plane and only marks the vertical holes in such a way that the operator can decide on further actions regarding them. The aim is to efficiently create point clouds which can be used for the generation of complete 3D terrain models.

The sphere target played a vital role in terrestrial LiDAR applications, and solving its geometrical center based on point cloud was a widely concerned problem. In this study, we proposed a newly finite random search algorithm for sphere target fitting. Based on the point cloud data and the geometric characteristics of the sphere target, the algorithm realized the target sphere fitting from the perspective of probability and statistics with the help of parameter estimation. Firstly, an initial constraint space was constructed, and the initial center and radius were determined by finite random search. Then, the optimal spherical center and radius were determined gradually through continuous iterative optimization. We tested the algorithm with the simulated and realistic point cloud. Experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm could be effectively applied to all kinds of point cloud fitting. When the coverage rate was bigger than 30%, the fitting accuracy could reach within 0.01 mm for all kinds of point clouds. When the coverage rate was less than 20%, the fitting accuracy can reach ±1 mm, although it was reduced to a certain extent.

VLS (Vehicle-borne Laser Scanning) can easily scan the road surface in the close range with high density. UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) can capture a wider range of ground images. Due to the complementary features of platforms of VLS and UAV, combining the two methods becomes a more effective method of data acquisition. In this paper, a non-rigid method for the aerotriangulation of UAV images assisted by a vehicle-borne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) point cloud is proposed, which greatly reduces the number of control points and improves the automation. We convert the LiDAR point cloud-assisted aerotriangulation into a registration problem between two point clouds, which does not require complicated feature extraction and match between point cloud and images. Compared with the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm, this method can address the non-rigid image distortion with a more rigorous adjustment model and a higher accuracy of aerotriangulation. The experimental results show that the constraint of the LiDAR point cloud ensures the high accuracy of the aerotriangulation, even in the absence of control points. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the checkpoints on the x, y, and z axes are 0.118 m, 0.163 m, and 0.084m, respectively, which verifies the reliability of the proposed method. As a necessary condition for joint mapping, the research based on VLS and UAV images in uncontrolled circumstances will greatly improve the efficiency of joint mapping and reduce its cost.

This paper describes a computational framework for constructing point clouds using digital projection patterns. The basic principle behind the approach is to project known patterns on the object using a digital projector. A digital camera is then used to take images of the object with the known projection patterns imposed on it. Due to the presence of 3D faces of the object, the projection patterns appear distorted in the images. The images are analyzed to construct the 3D point cloud that is capable of introducing the observed distortions in the images. The approach described in this paper presents three advances over the previously developed approaches. First, it is capable of working with the projection patterns that have variable fringe widths and curved fringes and hence can provide improved accuracy. Second, our algorithm minimizes the number of images needed for creating the 3D point cloud. Finally, we use a hybrid approach that uses a combination of reference plane images and estimated system parameters to construct the point cloud. This approach provides good run-time computational performance and simplifies the system calibration.
