Panchromatic Remote-sensing Instrument for Stereo Mapping (PRISM), one of onboard sensors carried on the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS), was designed to generate worldwide topographic data with its optical stereoscopic observation. The sensor consists of three independent panchromatic radiometers for viewing forward, nadir, and backward in 2.5 m ground resolution producing a triplet stereoscopic image along its track. The sensor had observed huge amount of stereo images all over the world during the mission life of the satellite from 2006 through 2011. We have semi-automatically processed Digital Surface Model (DSM) data with the image archives in some limited areas. The height accuracy of the dataset was estimated at less than 5 m (rms) from the evaluation with ground control points (GCPs) or reference DSMs derived from the Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR). Then, we decided to process the global DSM datasets from all available archives of PRISM stereo images by the end of March 2016. This paper briefly reports on the latest processing algorithms for the global DSM datasets as well as their preliminary results on some test sites. The accuracies and error characteristics of datasets are analyzed and discussed on various fields by the comparison with existing global datasets such as Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) data and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data, as well as the GCPs and the reference airborne LiDAR/DSM.

The lack of ground control points (GCPs) affects the elevation accuracy of digital surface models (DSMs) generated by optical satellite stereo images and limits the application of high-resolution DSMs. It is a feasible idea to use ICESat-2 (Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2) laser altimetry data to improve the elevation accuracy of optical stereo images, but it is necessary to accurately match the two types of data. This paper proposes a DSM registration strategy based on terrain similarity (BOTS), which integrates ICESat-2 laser altimetry data without GCPs and improves the DSM elevation accuracy generation from optical satellite stereo pairs. Under different terrain conditions, Worldview-2, SV-1, GF-7, and ZY-3 stereo pairs were used to verify the effectiveness of this method. The experimental results show that the BOTS method proposed in this paper is more robust when there are a large number of abnormal points in the ICESat-2 data or there is a large elevation gap between DSMs. After fusion of ICESat-2 data, the DSM elevation accuracy extracted from the satellite stereo pair is improved by 73~92%, and the root mean square error (RMSE) of Worldview-2 DSM reaches 0.71 m.

Abstract The TerraSAR-X add-on for Digital Elevation Measurement (TanDEM-X) mission launched in 2010 is another programme – after the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) in 2000 – that uses space-borne radar interferometry to build a global digital surface model. This article presents the accuracy assessment of the TanDEM-X intermediate Digital Elevation Model (IDEM) provided by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) under the project “Accuracy assessment of a Digital Elevation Model based on TanDEM-X data” for the southwestern territory of Poland. The study area included: open terrain, urban terrain and forested terrain. Based on a set of 17,498 reference points acquired by airborne laser scanning, the mean errors of average heights and standard deviations were calculated for areas with a terrain slope below 2 degrees, between 2 and 6 degrees and above 6 degrees. The absolute accuracy of the IDEM data for the analysed area, expressed as a root mean square error (Total RMSE), was 0.77 m.

Abstract. Multispectral images are the main data source of optical satellite remote sensing application. Consistent geometric accuracy is the basis of image registration and fusion. But the multispectral images usually collected by the nadir imaging camera are of weak geometric intersection, which will lead to the rank defect of the adjustment equation when performing block adjustment (BA) directly, making the solution unstable. Thus, a planar BA aided by additional digital surface model (DSM) which can overcome this weak geometry is often used to improve the geometric accuracy and consistency of regional planar images. However, the inevitable elevation error and the indispensable ground control points (GCPs) make the method limited in practical application. In this paper, a new method aiming to the BA of planer multispectral images of ZY-3 satellite without use of GCPs is presented. This method introduces the constraint of stereo images to assist the BA of planar images. By configuring appropriate weights of different observations, the integrated optimization of positioning models of planar and stereo images can be achieved together. The effectiveness of the method was verified by the planar multispectral images and stereo three linear camera (TLC) images collected by ZY-3 satellite. The satisfactory results indicated the rationality and effectiveness of the presented method.

Forest canopy height is an indispensable forest vertical structure parameter for understanding the carbon cycle and forest ecosystem services. A variety of studies based on spaceborne Lidar, such as ICESat, ICESat-2 and airborne Lidar, were conducted to estimate forest canopy height at multiple scales. However, while a few studies have been conducted based on ICESat-2 simulated data from airborne Lidar data, few studies have analyzed ATL08 and ATL03 products derived from the ATLAS sensor onboard ICESat-2 for regional vegetation canopy height mapping. It is necessary and promising to explore how data obtained by ICESat-2 can be applied to estimate forest canopy height. This study proposes a new means to estimate forest canopy height, defined as the mean height of trees within a given forest area, using a combination of ICESat-2 ATL08 and ATL03 data and ZY-3 satellite stereo images. Five procedures were used to estimate the forest canopy height of the city of Nanning in China: (1) Processing ground photons in a 30 m × 30 m grid; (2) Extracting a digital surface model (DSM) using ZY-3 stereo images; (3) Calculating a discontinuous canopy height model (CHM) dataset; (4) Validating the DSM and ground photon height using GEDI data; (5) Estimating the regional wall-to-wall forest canopy height product based on the backpropagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN) model and Landsat 8 vegetation indices and independent accuracy assessments with field measured plots. The validation shows a root mean square error (RMSE) of 3.34 m to 3.47 m and a coefficient of determination R2 = 0.51. The new method shows promise and can be used for large-scale forest canopy height mapping at various resolutions or in combination with other data, such as SAR images. Finally, this study analyzes resolutions and how to filter effective data when ATL08 data are directly used to generate regional or global vegetation height products, which will be the focus of future research.

Abstract. Large-scale groundwater models involving aquifers and basins of multiple countries are still rare due to a lack of hydrogeological data which are usually only available in developed countries. In this study, we propose a novel approach to construct large-scale groundwater models by using global datasets that are readily available. As the test-bed, we use the combined Rhine-Meuse basin that contains groundwater head data used to verify the model output. We start by building a distributed land surface model (30 arc-second resolution) to estimate groundwater recharge and river discharge. Subsequently, a MODFLOW transient groundwater model is built and forced by the recharge and surface water levels calculated by the land surface model. Although the method that we used to couple the land surface and MODFLOW groundwater model is considered as an offline-coupling procedure (i.e. the simulations of both models were performed separately), results are promising. The simulated river discharges compare well to the observations. Moreover, based on our sensitivity analysis, in which we run several groundwater model scenarios with various hydrogeological parameter settings, we observe that the model can reproduce the observed groundwater head time series reasonably well. However, we note that there are still some limitations in the current approach, specifically because the current offline-coupling technique simplifies dynamic feedbacks between surface water levels and groundwater heads, and between soil moisture states and groundwater heads. Also the current sensitivity analysis ignores the uncertainty of the land surface model output. Despite these limitations, we argue that the results of the current model show a promise for large-scale groundwater modeling practices, including for data-poor environments and at the global scale.

Traditional remote sensing approach for mapping aquaculture ponds typically involves the use of aerial photography and high resolution images. The current study demonstrates the use of object-based image processing and analyses of LiDAR-data-generated derivative images with 1-meter resolution, namely: CHM (canopy height model) layer, DSM (digital surface model) layer, DTM (digital terrain model) layer, Hillshade layer, Intensity layer, NumRet (number of returns) layer, and Slope layer. A Canny edge detection algorithm was also performed on the Hillshade layer in order to create a new image (Canny layer) with more defined edges. These derivative images were then used as input layers to perform a multi-resolution segmentation algorithm best fit to delineate the aquaculture ponds. In order to extract the aquaculture pond feature, three major classes were identified for classification, including land, vegetation and water. Classification was first performed by using assign class algorithm to classify Flat Surfaces to segments with mean Slope values of 10 or lower. Out of these Flat Surfaces, assign class algorithm was then performed to determine Water feature by using a threshold value of 63.5. The segments identified as Water were then merged together to form larger bodies of water which comprises the aquaculture ponds. The present study shows that LiDAR data coupled with object-based classification can be an effective approach for mapping coastal aquaculture ponds. The workflow currently presented can be used as a model to map other areas in the Philippines where aquaculture ponds exist.

Open-pit coal mines’ terrain is often complex and quickly and frequently changes. Therefore, topographic surveys of open-pit mines are undertaken on a daily basis. While these tasks are very time-consuming and costly with traditional methods such as total station and GNSS, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based method can be more efficient. This method is a combination of the “Structure from motion” (SfM) photogrammetry technique and UAV photogrammetry which has been widely used in topographic surveying. With an increasing popularity of RTK-enabled drones, it is becoming even more powerful method. While the important role of ground control points (GCP) in the accuracy of digital surface model (DSM) generated from images acquired by “traditional” UAVs (not RTK-enabled drones) has been proved in many previous studies, it is not clear in the case of RTK-enabled drones, especially for complex terrain in open-pit coal mines. In this study, we experimentally investigated the influence of GCP regarding its numbers and distribution on the accuracy of DSM generation from images acquired by RTK-enabled drones in open-pit coal mines. In addition, the Post Processing Kinematic (PPK) mode was executed over a test field with the same flight altitude. DSM generation was performed with several block control configurations: PPK only, PPK with one GCP, and PPK with two GCPs. Several positions of GCPs were also examined to test the optimal locations for placing GCPs to achieve accurate DSMs. The results show that the horizontal and vertical accuracy given by PPK only were 9.3 and 84.4 cm, respectively. However, when adding at least one GCP, the accuracy was significantly improved in both horizontal and vertical components, with RMSE for XY and Z ranging between 3.8 and 9.8 cm (with one GCP) and between 3.0 and 5.7 cm (with two GCPs), respectively. Also, the GCPs placed in the deep areas of the open-pit mine could ensure the cm-level accuracy.
