Abstract. The Zeravshan River is a transboundary river whose water is mainly used for irrigation of agricultural lands of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Sufficiently rich hydropower resources in upstream of the Zeravshan River characterize the Republic of Tajikistan. Continuous monitoring of water resources condition is necessary for planning the development of this area taking into account hydropower production and irrigation needs. Water quality of Zeravshan River is currently one of the main problems in the relationship between the Republics of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, and it frequently triggers conflict situations between the two countries. In most cases, the problem of water quality of the Zeravshan River is related to river pollution by wastewater of the Anzob Mountain-concentrating Industrial Complex (AMCC) in Tajikistan. In this paper results of research of chemical and bacteriological composition of the Zeravshan River waters are presented. The minimum impact of AMCC on quality of water of the river was experimentally established.

AbstractWater quality studies in Nigeria are usually conducted at local scales and limited to a restricted number of chemical contaminants, while reliable data on trace metal concentrations (including arsenic) are relatively scarce. This study focuses on the quality of available renewable water resources in terms of major ion and trace element concentrations at selected sampling locations in the Lower River Niger basin and part of the Lagos region. A screening of water contamination by arsenic and heavy metals was carried out through water sampling at selected locations using in situ measurement and laboratory testing to estimate heavy metal concentrations and water type. The analysis reveals moderate trace element contamination of the water resources, with the exception of Pb, while Mn and, to a lesser extent, Al exceeded WHO quality standards, but the Arsenic concentrations are within drinking water quality standards and are safe for consumption and irrigation, while the water type is Bicarbonate.

The purpose of this article is to study the processes of water quality management, which are considered as the main factor of the strategic social and economic development of the region and also to form tools supporting this process. The article analyzes the state and development trends of the water sector of the Rostov region from the standpoint of solving the problems of its strategic social and economic development. The authors demonstrate the possibility of intellectualization of regional strategizing processes through the use of water quality monitoring of the knowledge of experts with the use of fuzzy logic. The review of existing approaches to the assessment of water resources quality is given. It is shown that these approaches do not take into account the different requirements of water users to the content of chemicals and compounds in the water but assess the state of water resources in terms of conformity of concentration indices of polluting substances to maximally allowable concentrations. The authors suggest assessing the quality of water resources in compliance with the criteria of the contamination of water resources set for every category of water users. The approach proposed by the authors implies the assessment of water quality in two modes – differentiated and complex. Meanwhile, the suggested tools are universal and can be used in the systems of regional strategizing of the use of various water basins. A conceptual representation of the structure of the management system of water resources quality in the region within the system of regional strategizing is formed and the main problems of its development are identified.

The results of the study of ecological and geochemical features and assessment of the water quality of water sources located on the territory of the Semipalatinsk test site are presented. The studied waters are diverse in chemical composition: 14 % of the samples had hydrocarbonate, 69 % – sulfate, and 17 % – chloride types of waters. On the basis of the revealed features of the elemental composition of the underground waters of the Semipalatinsk test site, decreasing series of excess of the average concentrations of elements in water in relation to the composition of waters of the zones of hypergenesis and continental salinization were constructed: U14 > Mo8 > Sr8 > V3 (hypergenesis zone), U5 > Mo3 > Sr3 > V2 (zone of continental salinization). For the groundwater of the Semipalatinsk test site, specific elements were identified, such as U, Mo, Sr and V. The water quality was assessed for the studied chemical components based on comparison with the standards of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the World Health Organization (SaNPiN No. 209, WHO 2011).

In order to decide the measures needed to control pollution in rivers and to exploit their resources to the best economic advantage it is necessary to be able to forecast the effects of polluting discharges on the quality of water within them. Given this ability it is then possible to assess the costs of maintaining the water in a condition suitable for any desired use and thus to judge whether attainment of this objective is economically feasible and compares favourably with any other proposed use of the system. A focus for discussion of techniques for forecasting water quality is the situation in the River Trent, which is currently the subject of a wide ranging collaborative investigation, initiated by the Water Resources Board, aimed at establishing the best means of utilizing the water resources of the catchment to meet the expected demands for massive additional supplies in the area over the next few decades. The flow of water in the rivers of the system, per unit of population draining to them, varies considerably and in a qualitative sense correlates with differences in their present quality, those with high ratios of flow to population being generally of good quality, permitting their use as sources of potable supply, and those at the other end of the spectrum being badly polluted to the extent of being fishless.

Population growth in the Jakarta city that continues to rise each year, this has resulted in environmental pollution, especially pollution of the Ciliwung river continues to grow. Nowadays various attempts have been made in terms of prevention of pollution of the river Ciliwung. One of the efforts to control pollution in the river Ciliwung is monitoring the quality of water in rivers and creeks Ciliwung. This monitoring is done in real-time and online, where the water quality data sent to data centers and analyzed  into information that can be displayed at any time and anywhere through the Internet. If there are pollutants that enter the river so heavilly polluted in certain time, the government or the authorities that manages the river can take action to control pollution. The evaluation of environmental effects generated by agricultural production on water quality became essential in Brazil after the creation of policies for the use and conservation of water resources. For such, water quality indices have been considered with the purpose of showing the spatial and temporal variation of water quality in a watershed. The objective of this study was to develop a water quality index (WQI) applying the Multivariate Factorial Analysis (MFA) statistical technique, which could indicate the influence of agricultural activities in the quality of water resources. Water in a predominantly farm watershed was monitored from Sept. 2003 to Sept. 2004. Monthly water collections were carried out at six sample points, and eight parameters were analyzed: nitrate, ammoniacal nitrogen, ammonia, total phosphorus, electrical conductivity, pH, suspended solids and turbidity, which were considered important due to the agricultural management adopted in the region. Results indicated a contamination of agricultural origin along the basin. Factorial analysis showed that ammonia, ammoniacal nitrogen and nitrate parameters were the ones that most contributed in determining the WQI.
