To bookend the  6th Biennial National Association of Enabling Educators of Australia (NAEEA) Conference, five invited speakers joined a panel on the future directions of enabling education locally and globally:  David Bull, founding and outgoing Chair of the Association and  also the Director of the University of Southern Queensland’s Open Access College, Australia; Professor Mike Osborne, Director of the Centre for Research and Chair of Adult and Lifelong Learning (CR&DALL) at the University of Glasgow, United Kingdom; Professor Karen Nelson Pro Vice-Chancellor (Students) at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia; Professor Norm Sheehan, a Wiradjuri man and Director of Gnibi College at Southern Cross University, Australia; Associate Professor Nick Zepke Massey University, New Zealand.  The panel discussion was facilitated by Karen Seary, Associate Dean at CQUniversity and recently elected Chair of the NAEEA.  The panellists encouraged NAEEA members to strengthen enabling practice through a robust approach to research and documenting their practice whilst focusing on students and their success. The following excerpts were taken from a transcription of the panel by the authors, who have made all attempts to ensure the accuracy of information presented.

What different kinds of festival are to be found on the ever-expanding international circuit? What companies are invited or gatecrash the events? What is the role of festivals and festival-going in a global theatrical economy? In this article Murray Edmond describes three festivals which he attended in Poland in the summer of 2007 – the exemplary Malta Festival, held in Poznan; the Warsaw Festival of Street Performance; and the Brave Festival (‘Against Cultural Exile’) in Wroclaw – and through an analysis of specific events and productions suggests ways of distinguishing and assessing their aims, success, and role in what Barthes called the ‘special time’ which festivals have occupied since the Ancient Greeks dedicated such an occasion to Dionysus. Murray Edmond is Associate Professor of Drama at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. His recent publications include Noh Business (Berkeley: Atelos Press, 2005), a study, via essay, diary, and five short plays, of the influence of Noh theatre on the Western avant-garde, and articles in Contemporary Theatre Review (2006), Australasian Drama Studies (April 2007), and Performing Aotearoa: New Zealand Theatre and Drama in an Age of Transition (2007). He works professionally as a dramaturge, notably for Indian Ink Theatre Company, and has also published ten volumes of poetry, of which the most recent is Fool Moon (Auckland: Auckland University Press, 2004).

Open access publications are those where following the publication itself, the publishers allow anyone to access the article or publication to read, or download without any restriction. It is believed that publishing in open access journals can increase the visibility of the publication, although uncertainties prevail. In a bid to improve the PBRF ratings, the College research committee in its monthly meeting agreed to organise an Open Access Seminar in the college. The seminar was organised on 4th of June, 2015, Thursday. Four speakers were identified. They were: Peter Lund and Anton Angelo from the University of Canterbury Central Library and Researcn Unit, Peter Binfield from PeerJ, and Viriginia Barbour from Australian Open Access Support Group. The topics of the seminar included a brief introduction to open access publishing and the state of the scenario in NZ and Australia and exploration of the issues around green and gold open access, and future directions as to what can be done to increase participation in open access. The seminar was also designed to be an open to all, and free flowing discussion. This seminar followed a format of webinar and on the spot presentations, questions and answers. A web based page was set up using the openly accessible Adobe Connect "room" where participants could connect even if they were not able to attend in person. Dr Binfield and Barbour were overseas speakers and they connected using the webinar (Adobe Connect). Mr Lund and Angelo were local speakers and they came to the meeting hall directly and spoke. A resource website was set up and the event was recorded for later viewing. The event was publicised across the university and through online channels. About 30 individuals attended the meeting in person, and ten participants joined online. Mr Lund introduced the concept of open access at the University of Canterbury, and introduced the concepts of gold and green open access; Mr Angelo introduced the concepts of creative commons, and Drs Binfield and Barbour discussed models of open access and the situation in Australia. The floor was open for questions, and clarifications and discussions from the audience participation. Key takeaway lessons from the seminar included: at the University of Canterbury, scholars are active in publishing in Open Access channels; green open access is popular in Australia and in New Zealand; newer channels and novel publishing models uitlising the Open Access formats are emerging and becoming popular; while some reservations about quality in open access exist, quality of peer review in OA journals were at par.

With this second issue of Volume 9 of the Journal of Teaching and Learning Practice we bring a warm welcome to new members of the Editorial board. The board will be strengthened by their contributions. The Senior Editors are Associate Professor Geraldine Lefoe, University of Wollongong, Australia and Dr Meg O'Reilly, Southern Cross University, Australia. Our editorial board includes members of the host institution (University of Wollongong), Dr Lynne Keevers, Ms Lucia Tome, Associate Professor Greg Hampton, Dr. Michael Jones, Associate Professor Anne Porter, and Dr. Dominique Parrish. Our external board members include Ms Jude Carroll, Associate Professor Andrew Furco, Professor Terence Lovat, and Ms Carolyn Webb. We have particularly appreciated the support of the University of Wollongong’s Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Rob Castle who has recently retired. His patronage and support of our journal has seen it move from a small internal journal to a much larger international journal. He has been a great champion for teaching and learning in the local and national arena and his contributions to the institution and to the sector have been greatly valued. We wish him well in his retirement and know that he will continue his contributions to the sector in the years to come.

This issue of the Journal of New Zealand Studies has been edited by Anna Green, who is the new staff member at the Stout Research Centre for New Zealand Studies.  Wellknown as an oral historian and formerly of Waikato University, Associate Professor Green comes to us from the University of Exeter, and we are delighted to welcome her as a new colleague as well as the editor of the JNZS.  She brings enormous experience and expertise to the role.

Free expression that leads to the vibrant exchange of ideas is thought to be the very lifeblood of a democratic society. It appears self-evident that campuses, where even the most resolute ‘truths’ not only may but even should be examined and re-examined, are the nucleus of such a society. Despite this, campus speech has become a flashpoint for competing — some would say irreconcilable — demands. On the one hand is the view that some speech should not be tolerated in an environment that must embrace diversity that is also a hallmark of our advanced liberal democracy, and which should aim for the equality of its members. Per this argument, some members of the university community are treated unequally when speech that tends to reinforce their marginalization as members of a sub-dominant group is permitted. This view may also extend to pedagogical practice, and so we might identify the debate as to whether certain words are ipso facto impermissible, regardless of their intended purpose.2   *The phrase “symbolic politics” is drawn from Stephen Newman’s article (this issue).**Dr. Kate Bezanson is Associate Professor of Sociology and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Brock University. “Emerging Nanomaterials for Healthcare”, a one-day conference held at the University of Warwick on 28 November 2014, brought together over 80 academics, postgraduates and industrialists from 17 institutions and organisations from across the UK. The aim of the meeting was to provide an interdisciplinary forum to discuss research towards solving current problems in healthcare using “smart” treatments based on nanomaterials. In addition to stories of success, an emphasis was also placed on lessons learned, as well as visions for future directions in this rapidly expanding field. Seven speakers and over twenty poster presentations directed discussion throughout the day, while the meeting closed with an interactive panel discussion.

This is a print version of three interviews I posted on my blog in 2016/17 as part of a series entitled The Open Access Interviews. The first interview is with Jutta Haider, an associate professor in Information Studies (Library and Information Science) at the Division of ALM, Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences, Lund University. Haider has researched and published on the shaping of public knowledge in contemporary digital culture, including on open access, encyclopaedias, search engines and social media. The second interview is with Philip Cohen, an American sociologist at the University of Maryland. Cohen is co-editor, with Syed Ali, of Contexts, the quarterly magazine of the American Sociological Association, and director of SocArXiv, an open archive of the social sciences The third interview is with Michaël Bon, a French biophysicist who founded the Self-Journal of Science. SJS is described as a free, non-profit, multidisciplinary platform for the communication of science, whose primary goal is to provide an evaluation system based on scientists’ judgment and collective intelligence, rather than bibliometrics. All three interviews include an introduction.

Dr. Susanne Schmid is the Associate Dean Research, Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and an Associate Professor in the Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology at Western University. Dr. Schmid has a background in biology and psychology and obtained a doctorate at the University Eye Hospital in Germany. Her research looks at early stages of sensory information processing and filtering, in particular habituation and prepulse inhibition. Anthony Li, a member of the Academic Affairs Committee for WURJHNS, had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Schmid to learn more about her career path and her research.

Dr Tom Fookes is an Associate Professor in Planning at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. He is a member of the Wortd Society for Ekistics and a graduate of the Athens Center of Ekistics. He arranged an undergraduate Bachelor of Planning student project on Greening University Campuses with the students travelling to Toronto for the Natural City Symposion where they reported on their work with posters and in a formal presentation. The principal student presenters were Alison Hall and Logan Whitelaw in conjunction with Nicola Bishop, LLoyd Johnston, Karen Kao, and Michelle Lee, Bplan students in the Department of Planning, University of Auckland. The text that follows is based on a PowerPoint presentation at the international symposion, 23-25 June, 2004, sponsored by the University of Toronto's Division of the Environmental Studies, and the World Society for Ekistics.
