As the subject of numerous studies over the last century, Balinese music has been presented in a particular light.  In the 21st Century, it has been a priority for Western musicologists to renew our outdated or inaccurate conceptions.  This paper joins that discourse by presenting an intercultural project as an opportunity to bring the perspective of Balinese musicians under consideration.  Recently, I undertook a recording project in Bali, working on my composition “Waringin,” written for Gamelan Salukat.  Gamelan Salukat is a 20-30-person bronze ensemble with a radical tuning system, comprised of young musicians (~18-30 yrs.) from around the Ubud region of Central Bali.  The project became a crossroads of musicianship, uncovering many intriguing tensions—notation versus oral learning, counting rhythms versus feeling or embodying rhythms, and composition versus improvisation.  The following ethnographic account explores how the young Balinese musicians tackled the problems we faced and discusses what implications these newly formed strategies have for Balinese music in a contemporary setting where East and West, self and other, participant and observer are no longer divided.

The work explores the interaction of the structure and content of the modern musical and scenic genre, rock opera. On the basis of the rock opera “The Legend of Xentaron” staged by “Epidemic”, a Russian power metal group, authors show characteristics of the rock opera of the 21st century, performing and instrumental structure, other components of the new musical and scenic action influencing the listener, the trend of influence of a genre of a fantasy on characteristic stylistic features of a genre of a rock opera is considered. The authors pay special attention to the analysis of dramaturgy in the rock opera “The Legend of Xentaron”, on the basis of which it is characterized as a mixed form, synthesizing the techniques of conflict and epic dramaturgy. At the same time, they revealed both typical and already traditional features for this musical stage genre, as well as modern trends in its evolution. This refers to such new features as: serial, formulas, stereotyping, replicability. The inclusion of the results in the study of “History of variety and jazz music” will help university students to get an idea about new trends in development of the phenomena of performing art, styles, genres, directions and the repertoire in the field of vocal and instrumental variety and jazz music.

Bram Stocker’s Dracula (1897) is considered a cornerstone when the subject is vampires. Although there were important works written before Stocker’s, such as “The Vampyre” (1819) by John Polidori and Carmilla (1872) by Sheridan Le Fanu, it was Dracula that established a vampiric genre and influenced countless works that came afterwards. Vampires in the contemporary, however, present some primordial differences when compared to the 19th century Count. Their relation with humans, who once were seen just as prey, evolves in the 20th and 21st century. It can be argued that these differences are due to the age those blood sucking monsters were created and “live” among society.

At a key moment when education systems are moving towards the development of 21st-century skills at school, we propose to develop them with a series of enquiry activities connected to the real world on the subject of Chemistry in Compulsory Secondary Education. The four selected topics have practical aspects, as they are related to industrial chemistry, and are proposed in educational practice using the 5E model. The results obtained in a pilot test with 22 students show that the context created facilitates the development of 21st century competences. It is understood that this novel proposal can be successfully employed in other contexts.

This Handbook tells the story in 25 chapters of how Japan’s HE system has become what it is now, ending with a very tentative glimpse into the rest of the 21st century. A variety of themes are covered by scholars—both established, senior figures and younger researchers with their own fresh look at current circumstances. Chapters that concentrate on governance look at the distinction between "national," "public," and "private" institutions; others consider important topics such as internationalization, student recruitment, faculty mobility. More innovative topics include "Women of Color Leading in Japanese Higher Education." All provide copious references to other authorities, but rather than just toe the conventional line they include opinions and proposals that may be contentious or even revolutionary. The editor provides an overview of the subject and its treatment in an Introduction. -- Rights Statement: Amsterdam University Press has exclusive rights to sell the print Handbook in all territories excluding Japan, Taiwan and Korea. --

The article presents NDM-approach, which plays an interdisciplinary approach to education. It can also be called integrated approach, because it is considered the subject in its entirety and its functions are methodological, which determines the heuristic role. Emphasis is placed on didactic and mathematical modeling, based on integration, which is the major trend in the development of science. The aim of this approach is reaching the optimal development of learners’ intellect throughout their lives.

The purpose of this study was to understand the effects of cybercrime to Zimbabwe's peace and security. In the 21st century, cybercrime has become an international threat. This has necessitated many states to enact legislation and other measures to curb cybercrime. Primary data was gathered through key informant interviews, while documentary search was used to review scholarly literature on the subject. Key informants for the study were drawn from institutions that deal in combating cybercrime. Zimbabwe does not have adequate and effective legislative instruments to combat cybercrime. Cybercrime is a threat to peace and security as it can be used to bring down critical infrastructure and disrupt communication networks of the country. Some of the measures identified to curbing cybercrime include prevention and awareness, training and development, development of new technology and introduction of new laws, and updating of current and introduction of new legislations.

Volume 9, Issue 3 of the IJICTE (July-September 2013), Top 10 Technologies for Designing 21st Century Instruction, offered a first look at classroom technologies recommended to advance teaching and learning in the classroom. In this revised chapter, as with the original paper, we persist in seeking answers to important questions: “How does technology fit into my teaching?” How can I teach my students to become technologically literate?” “How do I infuse technology into as many levels of my curriculum as possible?” This chapter examines more contemporary technologies that readers should consider in preparing and delivering classroom instruction. We have attempted to rank order the technologies according to their broadest application across curriculum, offering a priority for how important these technologies might be in the classroom. Included in the coverage of each technology is a description of the technology, its primary features, advantages and disadvantages, and additional resources that bear witness to how they actually impact teaching and learning.
