Nexus of Renewable Energy Consumption, Economic Growth, Population Growth, FDI, and Environmental Degradation in South Asian Countries: New Evidence from Driscoll-Kraay Standard Error Approach

Environmental degradation is the most prominent area nowadays, especially in developing counties where high renewable energy consumption and population growth deteriorate the atmosphere of the country. Thus, the current study investigates the nexus among renewable energy consumption, economic growth (EG), population growth, foreign direct investment (FDI), and environmental degradation in South Asian countries. The covariance matrix estimators that are developed by “Driscoll and Kraay” are used in this study. The primary property of this estimator is that it does not account for the cross-sectional dependence; thus, it provides substantial, robust outcomes among the cross-sectional units while in the presence of cross-sectional dependence. The data was collected from the World Development Indicators (WDI) from 2001 to 2019. The findings exposed that positive nexus among the population growth, FDI, and environmental degradation while renewable energy consumption and EG has negative nexus with environmental degradation and also not supported the EKC hypothesis in South Asian countries. These findings suggested that the regulators should develop policies that reduce environmental degradation in the presence of high EG, energy consumption, FDI, and population growth.

This study examines the drivers of environmental degradation in [Formula: see text]. It focusses on three unresolved questions: (i) Does the inclusion of China in ASEAN panel aggravate environmental degradation, given that China is a high carbon emissions country? (ii) Does financial development moderate the impact of energy consumption on environmental degradation in ASEAN? (iii) Does urbanization moderate the impact of energy consumption on environmental degradation in ASEAN? It employs empirical strategies that account for heterogeneity, endogeneity and cross-sectional dependence. The results show that economic growth, energy consumption and non-renewable energy aggravate environmental degradation, whereas renewable energy, foreign direct investment and trade openness mitigate it. The inclusion of China in ASEAN panel weakens the EKC hypothesis. Financial development favorably moderates the effect of energy consumption on environmental degradation in ASEAN, but adversely moderates the effect in [Formula: see text]. Urbanization adversely moderates the impact of energy consumption on environmental degradation in both panels. Hence, efforts to address environmental degradation should consider these different drivers.

The following study shows the economic consequences of population and environmental degradation in selected South Asian Countries for the time period 2000- 2018. Panel cointegration shows the long-run association among population, urbanization, environment and economic growth. By using PMG estimation technique, the results show that environmental degradation has a negative influence on economic growth while the urban population has a progressive impact on economic growth while the total population has a negative impact on economic growth. The results of causality analysis show that there is bidirectional causality among all variables which indicates that population, urbanization, environment and economic growth are causing each other. It is also noticed by the causality analysis that population, urbanization and economic growth are causing environmental degradation in south Asian countries. Further the results show that there is cross-sectional dependency among all variables in selected countries which reveals that all these countries should make collaborative strategies to increase economic growth and to cope up the problem of environmental degradation.

South Africa is one of Africa's most polluted countries, with rising CO2 emissions posing a threat. South Africa must discover ways of minimizing pollution and take necessary steps before it is too late in order to achieve sustainable growth. For this purpose, this research assesses the ecological consequences of globalization, nonrenewable energy use, economic growth and renewable energy consumption in South Africa. The study leverages on the non-linearity advantages of the novel quantile on quantile regression (QQR) method for a robust analysis as opposed to the use of conventional linear approaches, thereby overcoming conspicuous shortfalls in extant studies, while offering a detailed explanation of the overall dependency structure between CO2 emissions and globalization, nonrenewable energy use and renewable energy use using a dataset covering the period between 1970 and 2018. The outcomes suggest that nonrenewable energy use, globalization, and economic growth contribute to environmental degradation in the majority of the quantiles, while the effect of renewable energy use on CO2 is not strong at all quantiles. The study highlights that economic expansion, nonrenewable energy use and globalization play key roles in in mitigating environmental sustainability in South Africa, while renewable energy is not sufficient to meet environmental requirements.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to find the causal relationship among energy consumption (renewable energy and non-renewable energy), gross domestic product (GDP) growth and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa for the period of 1990-2017. Design/methodology/approach The study uses bootstrap Dumitrescu and Hurlin panel causality test, which accepts heterogeneity and dependency in cross-sectional units across emerging countries. Findings The results find unidirectional causality from GDP to CO2 for India, China, Brazil, South Africa and no causality for Russia. The causality results from renewable energy consumption to GDP show that there is evidence of feedback hypothesis for China and Brazil, growth hypothesis for Russia, conservation hypothesis for South Africa and neutrality hypothesis for India. However, the results accept growth hypothesis for India, China, Russia, Brazil and neutrality hypothesis for South Africa. In the case of renewable energy and non-renewable energy consumption to CO2 emission, the results find convergence in India, Russia and South Africa and divergence in China and Brazil. Originality/value It is the first study that investigates the part of balanced economic growth, instead of simply financial development in those economies. Numerous studies have used diverse factors such as economic development, renewable energy, non-renewable energy and CO2 emission; however, the examination has used total GDP growth rate, energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between renewable energy consumption, water availability, and environmental degradation with the moderating effect of governance in the South Asian region. This study collected data for renewable energy, water availability, governance, and environmental degradation for the period of 1988 to 2018 from the World Development Indicator. In panel data estimation, if cross-sectional dependence exists, it produces biased estimates. Therefore, this study applied a newly developed technique, dynamic common correlated effect, which produces efficient estimates in the presence of cross-sectional dependence. This study found that foreign direct investment positively and significantly increases environment degradation (β = 0.69 *, * indicates the significance level at less than 1%) while renewable energy and water availability cause to reduce environment degradation (β = −0.08 **, β = −0.09 **, **indicates the significance level at less than 5%). Moreover, the study also found that governance significantly strengthens the relationship of renewable energy and water availability with environment degradation (β = 0.37 **, β = 0.24 **) while governance significantly weakens the relationship of foreign direct investment and environmental degradation (β = −0.34 *). The study suggests that South Asian countries should improve political institutions, and promote renewable energy, water availability, and clean production to improve the environment quality.
