We searched for the high-velocity and isolated neutron stars that encountered in the past with a stellar cluster/association closer than 20 pc. We took about 830000 stars with the high-quality astrometry and radial velocities from the Gaia DR2 catalogue and empirically selected about 560 high-velocity stars. We used a full gravitational potential of the Galaxy to calculate the motion of a stellar cluster/association and a candidate of high-velocity star from their current positions to the proximity epoch. For these calculations we used a numerical integration in rectangular, Galactocentric coordinates. We used a covariance matrices of the astrometric data for each star to estimate the accuracy of the obtained proximity distance and epoch. For this aim we used a Monte Carlo method, replaced each star with 10 000 of its simulations and studied the distribution of their individual close passages near a stellar cluster/association. In addition, we investigated a neutron star/runaway star pairs very likely both ejected from binary system during supernova event.

Abstract From Gaia DR2 data of eight high-velocity hot post-AGB candidates, LS 3593, LSE 148, LS 5107, HD 172324, HD 214539, LS IV −12 111, LS III +52 24, and LS 3099, we found that six of them have accurate parallaxes which made it possible to derive their distances, absolute visual magnitudes (MV) and luminosity (log L/L⊙). All the stars except LS 5107 have an accurate effective temperature (Teff) in the literature. Some of these stars are metal poor, and some of them do not have circumstellar dust shells. In the past, the distances of some stars were estimated to be 6 kpc, which we find to be incorrect. The accurate Gaia DR2 parallaxes show that they are relatively nearby, post-AGB stars. When compared with post-AGB evolutionary tracks we find their initial masses to be in the range 1 M⊙ to 2 M⊙. We find the luminosity of LSE 148 to be significantly lower than that of post-AGB stars, suggesting that this is a post-horizontal-branch star or post-early-AGB star. LS 3593 and LS 5107 are new high-velocity hot post-AGB stars from Gaia DR2.

Context. The Gaia-ESO Survey has taken high-quality spectra of a subset of 100 000 stars observed with the Gaia spacecraft. The goal for this subset is to derive chemical abundances for these stars that will complement the astrometric data collected by Gaia. Deriving the chemical abundances requires that the stellar parameters be determined. Aims. We present a pipeline for deriving stellar parameters from spectra observed with the FLAMES-UVES spectrograph in its standard fibre-fed mode centred on 580 nm, as used in the Gaia-ESO Survey. We quantify the performance of the pipeline in terms of systematic offsets and scatter. In doing so, we present a general method for benchmarking stellar parameter determination pipelines. Methods. Assuming a general model of the errors in stellar parameter pipelines, together with a sample of spectra of stars whose stellar parameters are known from fundamental measurements and relations, we use a Markov chain Monte Carlo method to quantitatively test the pipeline. Results. We find that the pipeline provides parameter estimates with systematic errors on effective temperature below 100 K, on surface gravity below 0.1 dex, and on metallicity below 0.05 dex for the main spectral types of star observed in the Gaia-ESO Survey and tested here. The performance on red giants is somewhat lower. Conclusions. The pipeline performs well enough to fulfil its intended purpose within the Gaia-ESO Survey. It is also general enough that it can be put to use on spectra from other surveys or other spectrographs similar to FLAMES-UVES.

ABSTRACT To construct the rotation curve of the Galaxy, classical Cepheids with proper motions, parallaxes and line-of-sight velocities from the Gaia DR2 Catalogue are used in large part. Our working sample formed from literature data contains about 800 Cepheids with estimates of their age. We determined that the linear rotation velocity of the Galaxy at the solar distance is V0 = 240 ± 3 km s−1. In this case, the distance from the Sun to the axis of rotation of the Galaxy is found to be R0 = 8.27 ± 0.10 kpc. A spectral analysis of radial and residual tangential velocities of Cepheids younger than 120 Myr showed close estimates of the parameters of the spiral density wave obtained from data both at the present time and in the past. Therefore, the value of the wavelength λR, θ is in the range [2.4–3.0] kpc, the pitch angle iR, θ is in the range [−13○, −10○] for a four-arm pattern model, and the amplitudes of the radial and tangential perturbations are fR ∼ 12 km s−1 and fθ ∼ 9 km s−1, respectively. Velocities of Cepheids older than 120 Myr currently give a wavelength λR, θ ∼ 5 kpc. This value differs significantly from the one we obtained from samples of young Cepheids. An analysis of the positions and velocities of old Cepheids, calculated by integrating their orbits backward in time, made it possible to determine significantly more reliable values of the parameters of the spiral density wave: wavelength λR, θ = 2.7 kpc and amplitudes of radial and tangential perturbations fR = 7.9 km s−1 and fθ = 5 km s−1, respectively.

It is now possible to determine proper motions of high-velocity objects in such a way as to obtain with some accuracy the velocity vector relevant to the Sun. If a potential field of the Galaxy is assumed, one can compute an actual orbit. A determination of the velocity of the globular clusterωCentauri has recently been completed at Greenwich, and it is found that the orbit is strongly retrograde in the Galaxy. Similar calculations may be made, though with less certainty, in the case of RR Lyrae variable stars.

Abstract The well measured gas-phase abundances in the low halo suggest that this region of the Galaxy has total (gas plus dust) metal abundances which are close to those in the solar neighborhood. The gas-phase abundances in the halo are generally higher than those seen in the disk, however, this affect is likely due to the destruction of dust in the halo clouds. Observations of high velocity clouds (HVCs) in the halo suggest that these clouds have metal abundances which are substantially lower than those measured for the local interstellar medium. These determinations, however, are often of lower quality than those for the low halo because of uncertainties in the hydrogen abundances along the sightlines, in the incorporation of elements into dust, and in the partial ionization of the clouds.

Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality of evidence of rhinology and rhinologic skull base surgery (RSBS) research and its evolution over the past decade. Study Design Review article. Setting We reviewed articles from 2007 to 2019 in 4 leading peer-reviewed otolaryngology journals and 3 rhinology-specific journals. Methods The articles were reviewed and levels of evidence were assigned using the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine 2011 guidelines. High quality was defined as level of evidence 1 or 2. Results In total, 1835 articles were reviewed in this study spanning a 13-year period. Overall, the absolute number of RSBS publications increased significantly 22.6% per year, from 108 articles in 2007 to 481 in 2019 ( P < .001; 95% CI, 7.9-37.2). In 2007, only 13 articles, or 15%, were high quality, and this grew to 146 articles, or 39%, in 2019. A 14.0% per year exponential increase in the number of high-quality publications was found to be statistically significant ( P < .001; 95% CI, 7.2, 20.7). Overall, high-quality publications represented just 25.8% of RSBS articles overall. There was no significant difference in quality between rhinology-specific journals and general otolaryngology journals (χ2 = 3.1, P = .077). Conclusion The number of overall publications and of high-quality RSBS publications has significantly increased over the past decade. However, the proportion of high-quality studies continues to represent a minority of total RSBS research.

As a preparation to the HIPPARCOS mission, a large observing programme on NLTT stars (propermotion > 0.18 ″/yr) was started in Genevaphotometry. The original programme consists of 10047 stars brighter than mR = 11.5, or mR = 12.5 if of colour class m. Among them, 7813 targets could be included in the HIPPARCOS programme, selected according to their observability and internal priorities in favour of large parallaxe stars (photometric distances < 100 pc) and high-velocity stars. The bulk of new nearby, halo, mild-metal poor and SMR stars in the HIP Catalogue originates from this proposal (N° 139). No less than 208 new nearby stars with π ≥ 40 mas were discovered south of δ +10°, the closest has π(HIP)= 182 mas. Radial velocities were obtained with CORAVEL at OHP and ESO. Most aspects of the early evolution of the Galaxy may be addressed with this sample. Here we discuss, as examples, the ages of the thick disk and of the galactic bulge.
