Present study was designed to evaluate the nutritional values of red skin potatoes collected fromGujranwala and Lahore regions of Pakistan. Potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) of Gujranwala and Lahorewere found to contain moisture contents of 5.00 and 5.15%, respectively. Fat was 0.19% in S. tuberosumof Gujranwala whereas Lahore potatoes were found to contain fat 0.2%. Fibre content of S. tuberosum ofGujranwala was 16.47% while S. tuberosum of Lahore had 13.45% fibre. Protein contents of S. tuberosumof Gujranwala were 12.89% whereas for S. tuberosum of Lahore were 13.11%. The water extract showedsignificant free radical scavenging activities in DPPH radical scavenging antioxidant assay and antioxidantactivity was increased in a dose dependent manner. These results suggest that potato (S. tuberosum) is notonly a cheap source of very important nutritents but also has antioxidant activities which are helpful tomaintain different physiological functions of body.

In the present study,in vitroantioxidant, free radical scavenging capacity, and hepatoprotective activity of methanol extracts fromPolyalthia longifoliaandCassia spectabiliswere evaluated using establishedin vitromodels such as ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl(DPPH•), hydroxyl radical(OH•), nitric oxide radical(NO•)scavenging, metal chelating, and antilipidperoxidation activities. Interestingly, all the extracts showed considerablein vitroantioxidant and free radical scavenging activities in a dose-dependent manner when compared to the standard antioxidant which verified the presence of strong antioxidant compound in leaf extracts tested. Phenolic and flavonoid content of these extracts is significantly correlated with antioxidant capacity. SinceP. longifoliaextract was exhibited betterin vitroantioxidant activities, it was subjected forin vivohepatoprotective activity in paracetamol-intoxicated mice. Therapy ofP. longifoliashowed the liver protective effect on biochemical and histopathological alterations. Moreover, histological studies also supported the biochemical finding, that is, the maximum improvement in the histoarchitecture of the liver. Results revealed thatP. longifolialeaf extract could protect the liver against paracetamol-induced oxidative damage by possibly increasing the antioxidant protection mechanism in mice. Our findings indicated thatP. longifoliaandC. spectabilishave potential as good sources of natural antioxidant/antiaging compounds.

We aimed to analyze the chemical compositions in Arabica coffee bean extracts, assess the relevant antioxidant and iron-chelating activities in coffee extracts and instant coffee, and evaluate the toxicity in roasted coffee. Coffee beans were extracted using boiling, drip-filtered and espresso brewing methods. Certain phenolics were investigated including trigonelline, caffeic acid and their derivatives, gallic acid, epicatechin, chlorogenic acid (CGA) and their derivatives, p-coumaroylquinic acid, p-coumaroyl glucoside, the rutin and syringic acid that exist in green and roasted coffee extracts, along with dimethoxycinnamic acid, caffeoylarbutin and cymaroside that may be present in green coffee bean extracts. Different phytochemicals were also detected in all of the coffee extracts. Roasted coffee extracts and instant coffees exhibited free-radical scavenging properties in a dose-dependent manner, for which drip coffee was observed to be the most effective (p < 0.05). All coffee extracts, instant coffee varieties and CGA could effectively bind ferric ion in a concentration-dependent manner resulting in an iron-bound complex. Roasted coffee extracts were neither toxic to normal mononuclear cells nor breast cancer cells. The findings indicate that phenolics, particularly CGA, could effectively contribute to the iron-chelating and free-radical scavenging properties observed in coffee brews. Thus, coffee may possess high pharmacological value and could be utilized as a health beverage.

A series of 20 new biologically active derivatives of 2-{4, 5-(substituted diphenyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-ylthio}acetyl chloride has been synthesized, with the aim to investigate antimicrobial, free radical scavenging activity. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by spectroscopic data and elemental analysis. The final compounds were tested for antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus MTCC 3160, Bacillus subtilis MTCC 441; Gram-negative bacteria: Escherichia coli MTCC 443, and, for antifungal activity, against Candida albicans MTCC 227 and Aspergillus niger MTCC 281, taking ciprofloxacin as antibacterial and fluconazole as antifungal standard drugs. Compound 7a6 was found to be the most effective antibacterial (MIC = 3.12 µg/ml), and compounds 7a2 and 7d1 (MIC = 3.12 and 6.25 µg/ml) had the most effective antifungal effects on the selected strains, as compared to the standard drugs. The results of antioxidant studies revealed that compound 7b1 was found to be most active antioxidant, with 40.4±0.687 µg/ml, and compounds 7b3, 7d7, and 7d4 also showed promising free radical scavenging activity, as compared with the standard drug ascorbic acid.

AbstractTwo flavonoid aglycons, eight flavonoid glycosides, chlorogenic acid and syringin were isolated from aerial parts of Carthamus lanatus. Isorhamnetin 3-O-β-ᴅ-glucoside and chlorogenic acid were found for the first time in the genus Carthamus and respectively, quercimeritrin, astragalin, kaempferol 3-O-β-ᴅ-sophoroside and syringin in the species. The ethyl acetate fraction of the methanol extract exhibited a higher antioxidant activity than the butanol fraction measured by the α,α-diphenyl-β-picrazylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. Cytotoxicity and antioxidant activities of the main constituent, luteolin 7-O-β-D-glucoside, were evaluated.

Orthosiphon stamineus (OS), Benth. (Lamiaceae) is widely used in Malaysia for treatments of various kidney and liver ailments. In the experiment, DPPH• radicals scavenging, Fe 3+-induced lipid peroxidation inhibiting activities and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) of methanol/water extract of Orthosiphon stamineus (SEOS) were determined. The results indicated that SEOS exhibited antioxidant, lipid peroxidation inhibition and free radical scavenging activities. The hepatoprotective activity of the SEOS was studied using CCl 4-induced liver toxicity in rats. The activity was assessed by monitoring liver function tests through the measurement of alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST). Furthermore, hepatic tissues were also subjected to histopathological studies. Pretreatment of SEOS (125, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg p.o.) dose-dependently reduced the necrotic changes in rat liver and inhibited the increase of serum ALT and AST activities. The results of the present study indicated that the hepatoprotective effect of Orthosiphon stamineus might be ascribable to its antioxidant and free radical scavenging property.

Abstract We evaluated free radical scavenging activity of the water, methanol and chloroform ex­tracts of propolis in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical and xanthine-xanthine oxidase (XOD) generated superoxide anion assay systems. The free radical scavenging activity guided fractionation and chemical analysis led to the isolation of a new compound, propol {3-[4-hydroxy-3-(3-oxo-but-1-enyl)-phenyl]-acrylic acid) from the water extract, which was more potent than most common antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E (α-tocopherol) in these assay systems.
