The study sought to determine how core competencies are employed during the performance management process of the selected private secondary schools in Port Harcourt. The need to ascertain whether these organizations employ their core competencies during their performance evaluation process led to this study. Survey research design was employed for the study. Two research questions were raised and one hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. The population of the study was 210 workers in the two private secondary schools that were selected for the study (Graceland International Secondary School and Blessed Children Academy High School). The entire population was used for the study. Structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The reliability of the instrument, tested through split-half method, were 0.61 and 0.71 for sections B and C respectively. Mean and Standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while Z-test was used to test the hypothesis. The findings of the study revealed that the respondents agreed that employees’ performance was measured by the outcomes of their effort, by the behavioral characteristics that led to those outcomes, and not by how closely related they were with top management or by how long they have been working in the organization. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others, that management of private secondary schools in Port Harcourt should lay more emphasis on behavioral competences not just on only the outcome of employees’ effort.

This paper adopted a descriptive design to investigate the awareness level and the perception of secondary school Physics teachers towards Nanotechnology in Port Harcourt Metropolis of Rivers State. The population of the study was 43 physics teachers comprising of 25 male and 18 female which was used from the 12 public secondary schools in Port Harcourt Metropolis in Rivers State. The instrument for the study was a self- made questionnaire titled, Nanotechnology Questionnaire on Awareness and Perception for Teachers (NQAPT) with a reliability of 0.85 obtained using Cronbach Alpha reliability formula. Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The research questions were answered using the criterion mean of 2.5 and standard deviation, while the null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance using t- test. The findings revealed that the awareness level of Nanotechnology among teacher was low and their perception towards nanotechnology was positive. There is no significant difference between the awareness level and perception of the concept of Nanotechnology among male and female senior secondary school Physics teachers. Based on these findings, it is recommended that more awareness on the concept of Nanotechnology be created among secondary school teachers through symposium and science teaching workshop in order to publicize the benefits of nanotechnology to the society.

This study examines the effect of Creative Game Approach on Academic Achievement in the teaching of SS1 Geometry in Port Harcourt Local Government Area of River state. A sample size of 160 SS1 students was used for the study. Three research questions were asked while three hypotheses were formulated and tested. Geometry Achievement Test (GAT), a 40-item instrument was developed by the researcher. The instrument was validated by experts in Mathematics education, and measurement and evaluation department of University of Port Harcourt, while the reliability was established using test-retest and co-efficient index of 0.86 was determined using Pearson product moment correlation. Mean and Standard deviation was used to answer the research questions while Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypotheses formulated at 0.05 level of significance. The result revealed a significant difference in the achievement mean scores of students taught geometry using creative game approach and those taught using conventional method. It equally showed a significant difference in the Mathematics ability of students taught using creative game approach, also showed no significant difference in the achievement mean scores of male and female students. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that Mathematics teachers be effectively trained to use different educational creative activities, like games and so on when teaching Mathematics concepts for problem-solving, communication, reasoning and connection skills which are necessary for the attainment of better academic achievement in the subject.


This research determined students’ perception of teachers’ characteristics of interest, attitude and subject mastery as required in the teaching of chemistry in senior secondary schools in Abakaliki Education Zone of Ebonyi State. The study made use of a descriptive survey design. The population of the study comprised all the chemistry students in all public secondary schools in Abakaliki Education Zone. From a total population of six hundred and thirty (630) senior secondary II students, a sample of three hundred (300) students was used for the study selected by stratified random sampling technique. This was based on the four local government areas in the Education zone. A structured questionnaire in a four point Likert type format was used for data collection. The instrument had a reliability coefficient of 0.88, which showed a high internal consistency. Three research questions and one hypothesis guided the study. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while t-test statistic was used to test the lone null hypothesis. Results of the study indicated that students perceived to a high extent; teachers’ interest, attitude towards chemistry and mastery of the subject as necessary characteristics in the teaching of chemistry. The hypothesis tested at 0.05 level of significance was not significant. Based on the results of the study and the educational implications of the results, recommendations were made.

IntroductionStrong primary health care (PHC) leads to better health outcomes, improves health equity and accelerates progress towards universal health coverage (UHC). The Astana Declaration on PHC emphasised the importance of quality care to achieve UHC. A comprehensive understanding of the quality paradigm of PHC is critical, yet it remains elusive in countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR). This study used a multistep approach to generate a policy-relevant research agenda for strengthening quality, safety and performance management in PHC in the EMR.MethodsA multistep approach was adopted, encompassing the following steps: scoping review and generation of evidence and gap maps, validation and ranking exercises, and development of an approach for research implementation. We followed Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines for conducting scoping reviews and a method review of the literature to build the evidence and gap maps. For the validation and ranking exercises, we purposively sampled 55 high-level policy-makers and stakeholders from selected EMR countries. We used explicit multicriteria for ranking the research questions emerging from the gap maps. The approach for research implementation was adapted from the literature and subsequently tailored to address the top ranked research question.ResultsThe evidence and gap maps revealed limited production of research evidence in the area of quality, safety and performance management in PHC by country and by topic. The priority setting exercises generated a ranked list of 34 policy-relevant research questions addressing quality, safety and performance management in PHC in the EMR. The proposed research implementation plan involves collaborative knowledge generation with policy-makers along with knowledge translation and impact assessment.ConclusionStudy findings can help inform and direct future plans to generate, disseminate and use research evidence to enhance quality, safety and performance management in PHC in EMR and beyond. Study methodology can help bridge the gap between research and policy-making.

This study aimed at finding out the human resources management practices as predictors of teachers‟ job security in secondary schools in Enugu State. The study adopted a survey research design and was carried out in the 25 public secondary schools in Udi Education Zone, Enugu State. The population comprised 50 respondents (19 male and 31 female) secondary school teachers randomly sampled from the schools. The study was guided by three research questions and three null hypotheses. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire, sectioned; A, B and C. The instrument was validated by experts while the reliability of the instrument was determined by the use of Cronbach Alpha formula which yielded reliability co-efficient of 0.76. The research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation while t-test was used to analyze the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance and appropriate degree of freedom. The null hypotheses tested showed no significant difference in the mean responses of male and female teachers on the training,compensation, and performance appraisal practices which contribute to secondary school teachers‟ job security. It was found among others that training, compensation and performance appraisalwhich are human resource management practices studied; contribute to teachers‟ job security. Therefore, this human resource management practices contribute to teachers‟ job security in secondary schools in Enugu State. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that teachers‟ training practices should be enhanced since it enhances teachers‟ job security. Teachers should be promoted as at when due and their salaries paid promptly to enhance their job security.

This study is an appraisal of counselors’ effectiveness in post primary institutions in Enugu State. This study adopted descriptive survey research deign. It was carried out in the six educational zones of Enugu state with a total of two hundred and seventy-five (275) government-owned secondary schools. The population for the study comprises a key officer each from all the two hundred and seventy-five (275) government owned secondary schools in Enugu State. Two hundred and seventy-five (275) is small and manageable as a sample for study. Hence, the researcher used all of them for the study. Therefore, no sampling was done. The researcher explored eight research questions and formulated two hypotheses on the comparison of the performance of counselors by gender and locations using t-test statistics at 0.05 level of significance. The research questions were answered using means and standard deviations. It was found that the respondents generally had high perceptions of the counselors’ performance in each of their professional roles except with respect to the referral function. It was also found that there is no significant difference in the performance of male and female counselors in both urban and rural areas. Recommendations were made that counselors should be adequately motivated and that counselors should specialize on guidance and counseling services to improve their effectiveness in post primary schools in Enugu State, Nigeria.

This study sought to determine teachers level of awareness and usage of non-violent strategies/interventions for the maintenance of discipline in secondary schools in Anambra State, Nigeria. Corporal punishment has become an unwritten sine qua non for the maintenance of school discipline - often the first thought that comes to the minds of teachers in treating acts of indiscipline and deviance. From the Nnewi Education Zone, comprising four local government areas (LGAs), 200 teachers were selected for descriptive survey out of 996 teachers. Stratified random sampling was used such that the schools were stratified into co-educational and single-sex schools, and from each randomly selected school, 10 teachers were selected. Two research questions and four null hypotheses guided this study, and questionnaire was used to collect data. The mean was used to answer the research questions and t-test for the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study recommended in-service training for teachers in educational psychology, particularly behaviour modification methods, parental input and interest in school discipline as well as the cessation of corporal punishment among others.

The purpose of the study was to ascertain the motivational techniques employed by teachers in secondary schools for teaching and learning of account in Awka education zone of Anambra State. It was a descriptive research guided by two research questions and two null hypotheses. The public and private secondary schools in the area were studied. All the 99 teachers of account in the area formed the population. There was no sampling. A researcher-developed questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. Four experts, all in Nnamdi Azikiwe University validated the instrument. The reliability of the study was established through pilot test in Onitsha education zone of Anambra State. The reliability coefficient of section 1 is 0.87 and that of section2 is 0.84 respectively. The direct approach was employed in the data collection. Out of the 99 copies of the instrument distributed, 96 copies were retrieved and correctly filled. They were subjected to data analysis. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while the null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance using t-test. Findings of the study indicated that teachers in secondary school employed both positive negative reinforcement techniques for teaching and learning of account. Based on this, it was recommended that teachers should also motivate their students through appreciation when they perform well (for instance, a teacher can say, ‘high five’ to a wellbehaved student)
