The tea consumption has become an important part of the Malian’s habits. As a result, an image of tea preparation and consumption among Malians has become widely diffused; tea is offered in three successive glasses: the first drink (FD), the second drink (SD) and the third drink (TD). However, no study has been carried out on the antioxidant potential of this type of green tea preparation. The objective of this work was to evaluate the quality of the preparation methods of green tea (Camellia sinensis) as performed in grins. Thus, a phytochemical screening was carried out, the quantitative estimation of total polyphenols was performed by the method of Folin-Ciocalteu and that of flavonoids by using the aluminum trichloride. The in vitro antioxidant activity of the different tea extracts (macerated and decocted) was determined by the DPPH method. Thus, the presence of several metabolites was revealed in these tea extracts and the cumulative contents of phenolic compounds in the green tea extracts found in the glasses were 150.67 ±7.87 mg EAG/g, while 140.67 ±2.37 mg EAG/g were collected in the macerated extract (WM). Both types of extracts showed similar levels of flavonoids. The antioxidant activity of FD in all tea samples was statistically identical to that of the extracts (WM) from tea samples A and D (p-values > 0.05). It appears from this preliminary study that neither the total phenolic compound contents nor the antioxidant activity would be impacted by the way Malian green tea is prepared.

Green tea (Camellia sinensis L.) is known to have ability to protect skin against free radicals. This is supported by polyphenol compound catechin. This research aims to determine the optimum Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance (HLB) value of Tween 60 and Span 80 compositions on the optimum cream formula of ethanol extract of green tea leaves. Tea leaves are extracted by macerating using 70% ethanol. Catechin in extract is known from Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) test with silica gel 60 F254 as stationary phase and ethyl acetate:aquadest:formic acid (18:1:1 v/v) as mobile phase. Antioxidant activity is determined by 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) method and value of Inhibition Concentration 50% (IC50) is then calculated. Formula optimization using Design Expert® version 7.1.5 (DX 7) software, Simplex Lattice Design (SLD) method with two components Tween 60 and Span 80. Cream is characterized according to physical properties organoleptic, homogeneity, viscosity, pH, spreadability, adhesiveness, and cream type. The optimum formula obtained is then tested for physical stability for 4 weeks at room temperature (28±2°C) and data are statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The extract contains catechin proved with Retention factor (Rf) value 0.8 and has antioxidant activity with IC50 value 56.35 ppm. 6.4% Tween 60 and 3.6% Span 80 result an optimum HLB value 11.1. It has viscosity 2897.50±35.94 mPa.s, spreadability 18.44±0.06 cm2, adhesiveness 0.85±0.05 seconds, and pH 4.530±0.002. Statistical test shows that the cream is significantly altered at pH, but does not significantly change in viscosity, spreadability, and adhesiveness after being stored for 4 weeks.

Abstract The antioxidant and anticandidal activities of leaves obtained from Camellia sinensis by non-fermentation (green and white teas), semi-fermentation (red tea) and fermentation method (black tea) were investigated. It was evaluated the total phenolic content by Folin-Ciocalteau assay; antioxidant capacities were evaluated in vitro using DPPH and ABTS radicals, hypochlorous acid and superoxide anion scavenger assays, induced hemolysis, lipid peroxidation by conjugated diene formation and myeloperoxidase activity. Anticandidal activity was performed on three strains of Candida spp. The results showed that non-fermented teas have a higher concentration of phenolic compounds, and then presented the best inhibitory activity of AAPH-induced hemolysis, the best inhibition of conjugated diene formation and more pronounced antioxidant activity in all tests. The highest anticandidal activity was obtained from fermented tea, followed by non-fermented tea. These results indicate that the antioxidant activity demonstrated has no direct relation with the anticandidal activity.

Crataegusfruit is one of most important fruits in Tunisian flora. Some fruits of this genus are edible. This study was undertaken in order to examine the benefits of these fruits in human health and their composition of antioxidants including total polyphenol, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins content, and total anthocyanins. The antioxidative properties of the ultrasonic methanolic extract were assessed by different in vitro methods such as the FRAP, DPPH, andβ-carotene/linoleic acid assay. We concluded that peel fraction of red fruits possessed relatively high antioxidant activity and might be a rich source of natural antioxidants in comparison with the pulp and seed fruit extract. The results also showed that hawthorn yellow fruit presents lower amounts of phenolic content, absence of anthocyanins, and less antioxidant capacity. Most of peel and seed fractions were stronger than the pulp fractions in antioxidant activity based on their DPPH IC50, FRAP values, and results ofβ-carotene/linoleic acid. The total phenolic compounds contents were also highly correlated with the DPPH method and the FRAP assay.

The objectives of this study are to screen the phytochemicals, estimate the content of flavonoid and alkaloids compounds and determine the antioxidant capacity of the Rauwolfia serpentina stem. Qualitative analysis of various phytochemical constituents and quantitative analysis of total phenol and alkaloids were determined by the well-known test protocol available in the literature. The hydro alcoholic extract of stem of Rauwolfia serpentina was studied for antioxidant activity on different in vitro models namely 1,1-diphenyl, 2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) method. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of phenols and flavonoids. The total flavonoids and alkaloids content of Rauwolfia serpentina stem of hydroalcoholic extract was 1.086 and 2.364mg/100mg respectively. Ascorbic acid used as standards was also evaluated for comparison. The extract showed dose dependent free radical scavenging property in the tested models. Rauwolfia serpentina stem extract showed IC50 value 68.10?g/ml for DPPH method, which was comparable to that of ascorbic acid (IC50=17.68?g/ml). The present study describes the phytochemical profile and antioxidant activity of Rauwolfia serpentina which will further used for medicinal applications.

Objective: This study estimated the Permangante Index (IKMnO4) and evaluated its correlation with parameters as total phenols (FT) and total antioxidant activity (TAA) of commercial teas of Camellia sinensis, fermented, unfermented and blended with other plants.Methods: The aqueous extracts were prepared from commercial samples of green and black teas, green tea blended with lemon (Camellia sinensis with Citrus limonium), green tea blended with mint (Camellia sinensis with Mentha piperita), green tea blended with peach (Camellia sinensis with Prunus persica) and green tea blended with orange (Camellia sinensis with Citrus sinensis). The Permangante index was determined by titrating the tea extract with potassium permanganate solution according to AOAC method (AOAC, 1980) with modifications. The concentration of phenols in the extracts was determined by spectrophotometry according to the standard procedure of Folin-Ciocalteau. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was evaluated using the radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH—) method. All the determinations were performed in triplicate, and the results presented as mean ± standard deviation (SD). The data were evaluated by univariate statistical analysis (ANOVA), F-test and mean test (Tukey´s test) for comparative results. Pearson’s correlation was used to measure the degree of linear correlation and the quantitative variables were from a normal population.Results: The results for Permanganate Index show a variation ranged from 0.40 to 0.80 mEq/l. The ANOVA analysis to IKMnO4 shown there is significant statistically difference at the 5% probability level (p < 0.05) between the types of tea as well as the amount of herb used to prepare the infusion. Therefore, it was observed that there significant contrast between tea extracts, the mixture of different plants in blended extracts as well as the tea manufacture process affect the polyphenols tannins content influencing the permanganate index parameter. Studies correlation shown strong correlations (r > 0.7) among the parameters. For the Camellia sinensis extracts the high correlations between IKMnO4 and TAA; FT and TAA demonstrates the suitability of the permanganate index in the evaluation of antioxidant activity.Conclusion: The results suggest that the Permanganate Index could be used for quality control of tea as an additional parameter.

Grape seed and green tea extracts are reported to produce antioxidant scavenging activities against free radical toxicity. This study aimed to investigate the hypothesis that a specific combination of these extracts presents a synergistic antioxidant scavenging activities. The extracts of grape seed, green tea and their mixtures were characterized by phytochemical studies and tested for phenolics and flavonoids. In vitro antioxidant activity for individual extract and its mixtures was determined by DPPH, hydroxyl and superoxide free radical scavenging methods. The amount of total phenolics varied among the different extracts and ranged from 43.74 to 67.68 mg of gallic acid equivalents (GAE) / g dry weight, whereas total flavonoids content ranged from 4.25 to 11.66 mg of quercetin equivalents (QU) /g dry weight. The present results suggest that both extracts reported a highly contents of total phenolic and flavonoids compounds, also the mixtures of these extracts can synergistically enhance antioxidant activity. Antioxidant potential from mixture 2 (grape seed extract 200 mg: green tea extract 100 mg) was comparable to that of standard. HPLC results showed that the most abundant components in the mixture 2 extract were epigallocatechingallate while the lowest was the procyanidine.

Total phenolic content, concentration of flavonoids and in vitro antioxidant activity of twenty different extracts from the whole plant and plant parts (leaves, flowers and stems) of <em>Teucrium polium </em>were determined. The total phenolic contents ranged between 14.57 to 157.84 mg of GaA/g of extract. The concentrations of flavonoids varied from 6.48 to 139.87 mg of Ru/g of extract. Antioxidant activity was determined in vitro using DPPH reagent and expressed as concentration of each extract required to inhibit radical by 50% (<em>IC</em><sub>50</sub>) values that ranged from 26.30 to 2190.75 µg/ml. The methanolic leaves extract contain the greatest concentration of phenolic compounds (157.84 mg of GaA/g) and showed strong antioxidant activity (<em>IC</em><sub>50</sub> = 26.30 µg/ml). Ginkgo and Green tea extracts were analyzed for comparison, and the results indicated that some extracts of <em>T. polium </em>were equal in activity with Ginkgo or Green tea and some appeared to have greater activity. The obtained results suggest strong antioxidant activity and large contribution of separate analysis for the maximum exploitation of active phenolic compounds from <em>T. polium</em>. Based on this information, plant parts of this plant are natural sources of antioxidant substances of high importance.

Background: Conventional food additives were associated with potential harm. Palm seeds are an interesting source of high-added value bioactive compounds, regarding their potential use in food industries. Aim: Date seeds extract (DSE) of Algerian Phoenix dactyliefra L. was studied for its phytochemical, antioxidant, and antibacterial activity and to identify its potential uses in foods. Material and methods: A total soluble solid of DSE (°Brix) was determined by refractometry. The total phenolic contents (TPCs) were determined according to the Folin-Cioclateu method and the total flavonoid and flavonols were also estimated with the colorimetric method. The DPPH method was used to determine the antioxidant activity of DSE. The IC50 values were also calculated and the antioxidant activity index (AAI) was determined. The agar well diffusion method was employed for the antibacterial activity of the aqueous DSE against various pathogens. Results: Moisture, ash, and fat contents (%) determined were 11.06, 1.33, and 7.06, respectively. The physicochemical analysis of the extract showed a pH value of 4.67, titratable acidity value of 0.64 citric acid/100 g, °Brix value = 3%, sugars values of 0.12, 0.47, and 0.35 g/L for reducing sugar, total sugar, and sucrose, respectively. The determination of phenolic compounds was carried out on three groups, namely total phenols = 229.67 mg GAEq/g, flavonoids = 201.12 mg QEq/g, and flavonols = 173.03 mg QEq/g, respectively. The DSE demonstrates to be effective as an antioxidant “in vitro” and showed a strong antibacterial activity with different inhibition levels, depending on the bacterial strains. Conclusion: The current investigations present knowledge about the possible role of palm industry by-products as a novel perspective for the development of new foods. We suggest that date seeds can be exploited in some food applications utilizing their high levels of bioactive molecules. Plants are traditionally used for pharmacological activities because of its ability to produce bioactive compounds. Myristica beddomei King ssp. ustulata W.J. de Wilde is an ethnomedicinal plant and it is seen in South Western Ghats of Kerala, India. The present study assessed the phenolic content, flavonoid concentration, in vitro antioxidant and cytotoxic effect of different parts of Myristica beddomei King. The total phenolic contents in the extracts ranged from 96.29 (pericarp) to 314.47 (bark) mg g-1 gallic acid equivalent. The concentration of flavonoids in different plant part extracts ranged from 1.81   to 2.76 mg g-1 equivalent to quercetin. All the parts exhibited potential antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 2.87 to 9.67 μg ml-1 when compared to the standard ascorbic acid with an IC50 value of 2 μg ml-1 in 1,1-diphenyl-2- picryl-hidrasil (DPPH) method. Bark showed highest activity in terms of DPPH radical scavenging (IC50 value of 2.87 µg ml-1), phosphomolybdenum test (2261.33 ± 1.65 mg g-1 trolox equivalent) and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) (113.1 ± 0.28 µmol Fe2+ µg-1) while pericarp showed low antioxidant activity. The in vitro screening results revealed that the seeds exhibited promising anticancer activity compared to PA1 (Ovarian Cancer) cells (50 % inhibition) were observed at a concentration 100.68 µg ml-1.  In cytotoxicity test L929 (Fibroblast) cell line compared to the other parts pericarp, mace and seed needed higher concentration (>240 µg ml-1) for LC50 value. It is a promising plant for further development of antioxidant agent as it got high content of phenolic compounds and potential antioxidant and anticancer activity.
